We are excited to introduce a new segment called "Leading Lady" these segments are to highlight women in business in and around the Annapolis area. It's always inspiring to me as an entrepreneur to hear someone else's story and how they got to where they are in business. And what's even more inspiring is talking to like minded women...because let's be clear Girl Power is real!!! So I hope you enjoy reading their stories as well and support them in their business endeavors!
This month we are highlighting Kathy Watson owner of Polish Change Nail Studio in Annapolis. This nail salon is a breath of fresh air...no literally...the studio does not use any acrylics or other products that cause the fumes you would normally be hit with when walking into most nail salons. Yet they still manage to provide amazing manicures and pedicures. If you aren't familiar with them, it is definitely worth checking out!
Here's a little bit more about them and their amazing owner Kathy who you can check out at some of our upcoming Girls Night Out events!
Tell us about your business and how you became the successful business woman you are today: I've always believed that when you create something out of necessity, you tend to have a lot of passion about it. My true reason for starting this journey was my mom's health and I started Polish Change after realizing how many people were putting themselves in jeopardy, every time they went to get their nails done. No one should have to be concerned about the conditions of their salon and with Polish Change, that margin for error has been eliminated.
Since I am a licensed nail technician and nail care expert, starting and growing my clientele all fell on me. In the beginning, I was the receptionist, manager, nail tech, human resources, janitor and accountant. It can be really challenging but there are so many rewards.
Describe yourself in three words:
Accepting, funny and no nonsense.
What do you consider your greatest professional achievement?
Creating a safe, clean environment where everyone from a mommy-to-be to a active gal to a cancer patient can go and feel great. That's pretty major in my book.
What are your professional goals for the next six months?
In the next six months, I'm excited to complete and move into a larger space, offer our retail line and work on my Polish For A Change foundation that offers free nail care services and products to women in need and debt-free job training for those who wish to learn a new skill.
What profession other than your own would you like to attempt?
I've always wanted to be a chocolatier like my hunny bunny. Maybe he'll let me get in the kitchen, one day.
How do you maintain a work/life balance?
I don''t sweat the small stuff. Even though my children are grown, having a kiddo with special needs is always a concern. I pick my battles. As long as the bills are paid, we try our best to enjoy life. Something as simple as playing a game of Mario Kart to catching the latest movie can make the difference. So what if the laundry isn't done by 3pm.
What websites do you visit every day?
My own. lol. you have to make sure your clients are able to access information and in the world of technology, anything can happen. I love Instagram on my phone and YouTube.
What are your top three favorite people/places/things to do in your city?
I love to bowl and I love a bowl from Chipotle. Besides that, I'm pretty much a home body unless I drive by a HomeGoods, then it's all over. I'm looking forward to more travel, soon.
What is your goal for retirement?
My ultimate goal for retirement is to have my nail salon as a franchise concept. However, my love for nails is so deep that I can see myself popping up every now and again or creating a nail design for a collection. Otherwise, it's travel, family, food and fun.
Do you have any advice for women who'd like to start their own company?
Don't second guess yourself. If something doesn't go right, don't look at it as a screw up. Look at it as, 'OK, so that won't work'. Don't look toward others to confirm your dreams. Also, make sure you cry. When something feels bad or feels awesome, let it out.
Any final comments?
I think it's very important that we agree to disagree sometimes. So often, people listen to reply and not to understand. Take a moment and hug your family and friends. Shy away from people or things that don't make you feel good about yourself. Last but not least, in a world filled with so much hate, why would we oppose any type of love. Peace, love and mani's.

So I know you guys have seen how I'm trying to live right and eat all the right things right....well some things just can't be avoided! I love a good brunch! I have been hearing about Miss Shirley's for a few years now but never got around to trying it out myself. I was so excited when they invited me to come try it out..how could I resist?
Remember how I said I love brunch....well I don't know why it took me so long to get here, when I saw the menu it was like brunch heaven! I mean first things first, every good brunch requires a good drink to start right? Mimosa's are my fave and they pulled out all the stops. It looked delish before I even had a chance to try it out!
They have so many options on the menu, it took my girlfriend and I several minutes to focus and pick something! You can't just come here once, clearly this requires more than one visit to really get the experience! They have tons of options for Omelettes, Pancakes and Waffles! Sandwiches and even Salads (if you must LOL).
We started with the BBQ Chicken Deviled Eggs and Fried Green Tomatoes w/ Crab...of course!
I am not a fan of deviled eggs, but these looked so good I had to try one off of my girlfriends plate! They were so tasty, the BBQ chicken on top gave it an amazing flavor! I love love love...did I say I LOVE Fried Green Tomatoes (no, not the movie!) and then they gave me an option to add crab! It was an amazing combo! There was just the right amount of lump crab to satisfy my craving because truth be told I would eat crab all day every day if I had the option!
Our main course was not easy to narrow down, I promise you! We decided to go with the Shrimp and Grits and the Crab Happy Chesapeake Chicken Sammy. We were not disappointed at all! The display alone of the shrimp and grits made you want to jump right in! The Crab Happy Chesapeake Chicken Sammy is a sandwich with a crab cake, fried pickle, fried egg and chicken sausage. I told you I love crab...I was NOT expecting this sandwich to have a full crab cake that was all meat no filler on top. It was amazing and fried pickles too! It was a tasty combination of flavors that will leave your mouth watering! I couldn't finish the whole sandwich...the second half was just as good later!
With our stomach's full we vowed that this would not be our last visit to Miss Shirley's! There were way too many other goodies on the menu calling our name to try! This place definitely tops the list for breakfast or brunch! Check out some more photos of what's on the menu, I promise you don't want to miss out!

Ok, calm down! I'm not kicking them out for good! During the summer when I was a kid it was rare that I was in the house. On the days when I did want to lounge around my mom was quick to give us an alternative- stay inside and clean or go outside and play! Now that I think about it maybe that's why we were outside so much!
None the less, here I am all grown up with two kids and it's summer time. Well I don't know if it's just my kids or what but I have to practically drag them outside on any given day. I have tried my mom's threat and ended up with 4 clean bathrooms and freshly mopped floors. Don't get me wrong...it was a nice break for me but what kid would rather clean than go outside!!?? Mine, especially my son. He will do anything to play that stinking video game of his even if it means cleaning. I have decided that this summer, I am kicking them out. Am I the only parent who is sick of so much screen time? I have so many great memories as a kid of the adventures we would go on with our bikes, the games we would play (OUTSIDE!), or even just finding my favorite spot to pack a lunch and read my favorite book.
So Mom's out there, help me out if you have better ideas or get on board and kick your kids out too!! I refuse to let my kids only childhood memory be what video game they played or what TV show they watched!
Keep an eye out, I will be sure to share my journey because I'm dedicated to getting these kids outside more and making some real childhood memories!
Sidenote- The lovely artwork is compliments of my daughter when she got kicked out yesterday..LOL

We held our March Girls Night Out event at Gordon Biersch and had an awesome time. The apps and drinks we awesome. I also stopped by on a separate occasion to have dinner and was not disappointed!
I started off with a Peach Martini this light-bodied drink was not too sweet and a perfect mix of flavor. My friend had the Pineapple Margarita which had a fresh fruit element to it that made it very refreshing! For appetizers we had Blue Crab & Artichoke Dip as well as the Southwest Egg-rolls.
I am very picky when it comes to anything crab related, as crab is probably my favorite thing to eat! This crab dip passed the test, there was a good amount of meat and I liked that we had options to dip. The Southwest egg-rolls are a blend of chicken, black beans, corn, roasted red peppers, onion, carrots, zucchini and pepper jack cheese and were so tasty! For dinner we had the Grilled Wild Caught Salmon and the Gorgonzola Rib-eye. The salmon had a robust flavor and is brushed with herb butter and light beer. The steak was perfectly tender and the Gorgonzola butter on top made your mouth water!
Finally dessert, we ordered the bread pudding. This was my friend's idea as I am not usually a fan of bread pudding. But when I saw it come out and the smell of it tickled my nose, I knew I had to give it a go. Let's just say I had more than one bite!! And they have made me a fan of bread pudding. This is a must try even if you are not usually a fan. I promise you will love it!

Maggiano's has been one of my favorite spots for Italian food for some time now. They always have great portions and the food is amazing. I only recently discovered that on the menu they have deals where you order a dish to eat in the restaurant and you get a second to take home. You can't beat that deal!
This past weekend my girlfriend and I decided it was time for a girls day out. So we decided to check out the new brunch at Maggiano's that way we could grab a bite and do some shopping! We went in around Noon and they weren't overly crowded so we were able to sit right away. However, before we ordered our food we noticed the place had packed up fairly quickly. We took forever to order because we were so busy chatting it up. When we finally took a look at the menu, it was tough trying to decide what to order because there were several tasty sounding options.
What is a girls brunch without a tasty drink right!? We opted for the Peach Bellini's which they also offer in a frozen version. We went for the non-frozen option and they were full of flavor. While waiting for our order they also provided us two mini cakes. They were kind of like a coffee cake texture and sweet.
For our meals, I went with the Chicken and Waffles and my friend ordered the crab cake, which comes with a poached egg but they gave her the option to change the way the eggs were cooked so she went with scrambled. In Maggiano's fashion, the portions were plentiful even for brunch!
The presentation definitely matched the taste. The chicken and waffles included 4 pieces of chicken in a batter that reminded me of funnel cake batter. It blended well with the waffles and syrup. The crab cake dish came with two crab cakes which were more crab meat than filler. The potatoes were seasoned with perfection. Both meals were way to much for us to eat in one sitting so we had leftovers to take home. I am looking forward to going back to try some of the other options on the menu, this is certainly a brunch you want to check out! The full brunch menu is served Saturday and Sunday until 3 pm. Make sure you let them know the Housewives of Annapolis sent you!
