As a NC Playground Safety Instructor and mom of a two year old, I must say parks are important to our family. One of the ways we got to know the great city of Atlanta was to explore area parks. Here's my take on some of the parks my family checked out.
Stone Mountain Park
There is something for everyone here. Exploring walking trails, playing in the playgrounds, climbing the mountain, riding the duck boats, visiting festivals, watching the laser show, and so much more! I recommend purchasing the yearly parking pass. There are season passes to the attractions at the park, but there is so much the park offers that do not cost that I would just go with the parking pass!
Centennial Olympic Park
The playgrounds are amazing and inclusive for all abilities. There is a great splash pad, nature areas to explore, open fields to play ball, and picnic areas. It's a great park, but the downfall is parking. It can cost $10 or more bucks depending on if there is an event happening, but its worth it if you plan a day out of it!
DeKalb Peachtree Airport Park
This is a great concept. The park is right near the runway and there is a viewing area to watch planes take off. There is also a "hanger" picnic shelter and a little playground. There are some safety concerns. There are no railings on the concrete viewing area to assist with climbing up and down and its pretty large. The playground equipment needs maintenance. There are these think black rubber steps to climb onto the equipment and it was extremely HOT! If your child is a plane enthusiast, this is the place to go, but i don't recommend it for toddlers.
Piedmont Park is amazing! It is HUGE!! There are so many things to do from playgrounds, ponds, walking paths, the list can go on and on. Here are just my tips.....
* plan for the whole day
* bring a wagon or stroller: you'll be doing a lot of walking
* bring snacks
* take a picture of the park map at an entrance.....you'll need it
* research what area you want to visit first. This will help with where to park. Be prepared to pay for parking
Mason Mill Park
This park is awesome. Its really new and has a lot for children to do. I recommend this park for older kids, but its a lot of fun for everyone. There is a large play equipment that resembles a tree house and kids can climb to the top! Its a tucked away park with plenty of free parking.
There really are so many parks in the area and all of them are unique in their own little way. I hope you found this helpful and take your family outside to play!
HI, I'm Kathy Bowen. I'm a California native but after being married to a now retired soldier I've lived all over the U.S. We finally settled in Atlanta 2 yrs ago. I have 5 beautiful children that keep me busy. Atlanta has such a great history and my family loves to get out on weekends and explore the city. I look forward to meeting you all at our monthly Girls Night Out and hear all about your journeys.
