I am excited to announce our leading lady this month is Tara Derenoncourt of Isagenix! Tara recently moved to our beautiful city of Austin from Hoboken, NJ.
Originally from Miami and a Penn State alumni, she's lived all over and she's happy to be in ATX!
An avid real estate investor, Tara loves taking on all different types of projects, from the rough stuff like construction down to, my personal favorite, home decor! You can find her browsing through the aisles of HomeGoods a little too often, just like the rest of us.
A few of her favorite activities are going to brunch and being a dog mom to the adorable Blue Ivy (I know what you're thinking, and the answer is yes... like Jay-Z & Beyonce's baby) and Dum dum...like the lollipop! Tara loves being outdoors as well as being around positive people who are inspiring and doing uplifting things–positive vibe type people. She thoroughly enjoys coaching people through their health journey, leading to a "kick ass" (Tara's exact words) transformation!
Tell us about your business and how you became the successful business woman you are today.
Ah, so I want to first start off by saying how this feels different for me, being featured as the Leading Lady. I am a pretty private person and not one who likes to talk about myself; but this is an amazing platform to share my story and hopefully it will inspire at least one woman out there.
Okay, so about my business: I am partnered with Isagenix. A health and wellness company whose vision is to impact world health and free people from physical and financial pain, and in the process create the largest health and wellness company in the world. What drives us is solutions to transform lives.
Our focus is on systems for anyone looking for weight loss, energy, healthy aging or performance based solutions. I have been using Isagenix products for a little over a year and a half. I was pretty much hooked 3 weeks into my 30 day program. I began talking about it so much that my friends and family started jumping on board. I would then get referrals from their friends and it just continued. What’s funny although I was sharing I never really thought of myself as being “in the business” because it just seemed so simple to share these products I loved. At the time I started “sharing” I was working full-time for a small construction company as a project manager. The line of work is high stress, demanding and I could easily work 60 hours a week, which I’m sure some of you can relate too. However, I would find pockets of my time to take calls from people who heard about the program I was coaching people on and seeing what great results they were getting and wanted to know more about it.
Fast forward to today, I can proudly say I am building a nutritional cleansing business. I really
don't know exactly the number of hours I put in, it can vary from week to week. Between social
media pages, following up on calls, coaching, team calls, emails, events, vendor tables, and meet
ups, the hours can add up quickly, but it has been a gradual process and usually is for most people
starting out. When you enjoy what you're doing it doesn't always seem like “work”. I look at my
business like this: if I (when I was working full time) can put in 60 hours a week for someone
else’s business then I can definitely make the time to put 20 hours into growing my own business.
What motivated you to start your business?
I was motivated to start my nutritional cleansing business due to the demand I've seen from people I know, who are looking for real solutions. People want simple solutions to their health and wellness needs. It cannot be complicated.
Most people want to get healthy but just don't know how to start. Others know what they need to do but just don't have the time. I found the systems and support that Isagenix offers to be by far some of the simplest, effective, nutritious, cost effective programs that really get results for those who want a lifestyle change. When first introducing the products to my friends and family and seeing the residuals I was getting just from sharing, I was amazed! The compensation plan is set up beautifully. Top notch. If you don't know what Residual Income is, please take some time to look it up, it will change your whole outlook about how you work for your money.
I love the teamwork mentality. You work for yourself but not by yourself. I didn't want to get into a business where I had to get into debt, worry about having to pay office or retail space, manage, pay employees or inventory. I wanted to focus my energy and time on helping others. The core values of Isagenix are in line with my views on Health, Purpose, Passion, Freedom, Family, Fun, Gratitude, Goals and Contribution. I am a problem solver by nature, I’m a giver, I care about peoples well being, I love the products, not to have to check in with a boss is a plus and to make some money along the way is my kind of deal! So in the end partnering with Isagenix made so much sense to me in so many ways.
Describe yourself in three words:
Giving, Caring, Funny, a Free Spirit and a little weird (like good weird though)…ok sorry that's more than 3 but I couldn't choose!
What do you consider your greatest personal achievements?
Honestly, I don't know how to answer this question because I don't think I have a greatest professional achievement yet. I think all of the achievements I’ve reached in my life thus far whether small or large, personal or professional, is leading me to something even bigger. I feel we all have a purpose in life and I think my greatest achievements are still yet to be seen. (Hey, that sounded pretty good, I should save that line...haha!)
What are your professional goals for the next six months?
My goals are really just to meet and connect with as many new people as possible. I'm currently
in Austin, TX – a great town by the way, and if you didn't hear, actually just voted the #1 city to live in.
I must say I know how to pick them! So my background is in sales, real estate sales actually,
but I am definitely not a typical salesperson. I don't like the feeling I get if someone thinks I'm
trying to sell them something. (Who the heck wants that right?! I know I don’t.)
I’m all about making genuine connections with people. I want someone to join because they genuinely feel like what I'm offering them is something of value, not because they feel pressured. Another goal of mine is to have some folks join me building on this incredible journey. I have a great supportive team with this amazing company and am definitely looking to expand with more builders in the Austin area. Woohoo!
What profession other than your own would you like to attempt?
I really like photography. I think the idea of capturing unexpected, unfiltered, organic moments is priceless. Life passes so quickly and you always look back and say I wish I took more pictures. So to be able to do that for someone, I think, is a pretty damn cool job!
How do you maintain a work/life balance?
This is something that I have been saying I need to work on for years, and this past summer I finally made a huge step to make it happen. As I mentioned earlier, I recently made the move to Austin from Hoboken, NJ. I loved, still do love the Northeast and my job but found myself so absorbed in just work, work, work. I made no time for myself, no time to meet new people, not enough time with the pups, barely got time to visit my family. I took a leap of faith this summer and made that change to live the life I believe I deserve. So the goal is to work hard and play even harder!
What websites do you visit everyday?
I’m on Facebook and Instagram multiple times a day. Pinterest (I mean who doesn't love pinning the heck out of everything I’m on Houzz to get ideas and inspiration but not as often as I used to. Pinterest is my main squeeze for all things inspirational. I use lots of real estate apps as well such as Redfin, Zillow, Realtor, etc.
What are your top 3 favorite people/places/things to do in your city?
Since I'm so new to Austin everything is still exciting to me. I haven't been here long enough to have gotten bored of anyone or anything just yet. So based on how often I have already frequented these places, my top choices you can catch me at in no particular order would be taking a barre class at Pure Barre Westlake or Arboretum studios; gotta love a good tuck, eating a veggie omelet at Thai Fresh on West Mary St, sipping on some joe while basking in the sun and getting my work done at CENOTE on E Caesar Chavez, and walking or people watching on Lady Bird Lake.
What is your goal for retirement?
My goal is to retire happy. I don't know what age that will be, I just know I want to be happy and free of any debt. I'd like to have the freedom to choose where I want to be or want to go and feel confident that I lived a good life and gave my best. Not that my life is over or I'm dying when I retire but you get my drift right?!
Do you have any advice for women who'd like to start their own company?
I think the first thing is to find something you love or at least really like to do. No point in putting effort into something blah. We spend so much of our lives working and it sucks to have wasted so much of your life on something you really don't like to do. Next is find a way to get paid to do that thing you love or like a lot. Loving something alone doesn't get the bills paid. Last, whatever you choose to do, stay consistent, keep a positive attitude and whatever you do, don't quit!
Any final comments?
I just want to say thanks to anyone who took the time out to read this interview. I hope if anything, you were able to get at least one positive thing out of it that you can use in your own life, or open your eyes to new business opportunities. If you have any questions please feel free to email me.
