I love sushi. I always liked sushi but fell more in love with it when I lived in England. Every corner was some style of oriental food and sushi was always the easiest to agree on. However most of my friends and family do not like sushi like I do so when I told my boyfriend that I was going to Cowfish he turned up his nose. So I took my best friend instead.
Cowfish is a sushi and burgers in one. It is located right in the middle of Southpark right infront of the mall. Cowfish infuses traditional sushi and burger items to create one of a kind menu items. Their goal is to be the best sushi and burger in town. In doing so, they mix and match all combinations to ensure you find something right from you, whether it is traditional or unconventional in style.
From the moment we walked in it was an experience. Our waitress was so nice and helpful. The menu was a little overwhelming because they had so many great options, but that’s ok. I told her a few things we wanted to try and she gave us some ideas. We felt she knew better than we did so we went with it.
My friend had never tried edamame before so we stared with an appetizer of it. There were a handful of others we wanted to try, like the Crab Rangoon dip and blackened tuna nachos, but we wanted to leave room for the sushi we were drooling for.
The first roll we decided to try was the blackened tuna roll from the fusion specialties portion of the menu. It was lump crabcake mix and cream cheese (YUM!) coated in tempura flakes then topped with seared blackened tuna, avocado salsa and a jalapeno. I get pretty iffy when it comes to the fresh fish from a bad experience but I trusted her decision, plus I love anything crab and cream cheese! This was my favorite roll of the two. It was so fresh, delicious, and melt in my mouth GOOD!
The second roll we tried was one of their ‘burgushi’ which is a combination of burger and sushi. We tried the taste explosion roll which included season natural Angus ground beef, Applewood bacon, jalapenos, spicy mayo on the inside, coated in tempura flakes and topped with a Roma tomato and pepper jack cheese. It was baked then drizzled with cashew cilantro pesto. I do not know what we were expecting but it was not this enjoyable burger in a roll sensation that we were tasting. It really blew my mind on how much the burgushi kept its flavor just like a burger would have been.
Oh, and the house white wine was great. I usually do not get the house wines because they end up bitter, sour, too dry or too sweet. I saw the house Chardonnay had pear flavors and figured I would give it a try. I would never have guessed it would have been a house Chardonnay in a blind tasting. if you like Chardonnay you need to give this one a try. It was a favorite for me, that’s for sure.
We left raving of the service, full from the food and completely blown away. I have heard so many great things about Cowfish but never made the trip to Southpark to try it. I am so glad I did and we decided to go back with a group last weekend, including the skeptical boyfriend of mine who wanted to try the Angus burgushi! We all loved each dish we received, the spiked shakes and the house wine, both red and white.
