Peggy Scanlan is an entrepreneur with a background focused in marketing. She is located in the Lakeview area of Chicago, where she lives with her husband and her one year old daughter. Having her daughter prompted her to
start her own business with Beautycounter so that she could continue to share every day with her as she grows. Beautycounter is an up and coming, non-toxic and cruelty free line of skincare, makeup and more! There are products for men, women and children all free harmful chemicals and other ingredients.
Do you have any advice for women who would like to start their own business?
Take the leap. You'll never know your true potential unless you jump in and try.
Describe yourself in three words:
Determined. Cause-driven. Mompreneur.
Tell us about your business and how you became the successful business woman you are today:
More time to be with my two-year old, Nora, was the key thing that opened me to the idea of becoming a Beautycounter educator and consultant. Having worked 60+ hour work weeks regularly at an office for most of my career, this was a big change and a difficult leap for me to make mentally. Now that I did make the leap, I can see that it's possible to build a business that allows me more time and flexibility while still making comparable earnings to what I did before. I'm driven by causes and have a strong desire to make a difference through my work and volunteer activities. Beautycounter is a movement that was easy for me to fall in love with! The products are high quality and luxurious, on top of being cleaner and safer than many other products on the market today. Getting safer products into the hands of everyone is a way for me to help make the world better.
What do you consider your greatest professional achievement?
Finding the courage to let go of the perceived security of a traditional full-time job and become an entrepreneur.
How do you maintain a work/life balance?
My daughter, Nora, changed my whole perspective on work/life balance. I've always been very driven, ambitious and hardworking in my career. I'm now finding creative ways to continue achieving my career goals while maximizing my time with Nora. I enjoy working out and meditating for balance. These activities have admittedly taken a back-seat to Nora but I'm gradually doing more of them.
What are your professional goals for the next six months?
To bring others onboard to join me in the Beautycounter movement. Continue to grow my marketing knowledge and expertise. Work smarter, not harder, to reach similarly high goals and make annual earnings as my previous career while freeing up more time for family.
What is your goal for retirement?
To have enough savings to enjoy lots of time with my family and friends, travel and never stop learning new things.
What websites do you visit every day?
www.beautycounter.com/MargaretScanlan, www.sethgodin.com, Google and Facebook
What are your top three favorite people/places/things to do in your city?
Pizza Rustica/Lakeview for pizza, wine, salad and pasta; massage at Urban Oasis, Wiggleworms at the Old Town School of Folk Music

Joe and I got married at the Renaissance Hotel Washington D.C., Dupont Circle on New Year’s Eve 2015. It was only fitting for us to continue the tradition and stay in a Renaissance Hotel for our First Anniversary!
The Renaissance Hotel Downtown Chicago is a gem of a hotel! Poised with the strength of the Marriott brand and personality of all things modern and full of youth, it is located directly beside the river in The Loop. Everything and anything you can need or want is a close walk or quick cab away.
I honestly can say that this Renaissance is one of the best I have been to yet! The rooms are spacious, newly decorated and inviting. The lobby maintained a lively vibe throughout while the main restaurant kept up with graceful Marriott standards, boasting lavish brunches and generous views.
We were so welcomed by all of the staff and truly made to feel like this anniversary was celebrated; thank you to all at the Renaissance Hotel Downtown Chicago, you truly made our day one for the books!
As many of you may know from following my posts, I am new to the Chicago area. After several months of being here it came to a point where I HAD to get my hair done; a girl can only go so long without seeing the inside of a salon.
One of the downsides to being new to an area (as adventurous as it may be) is not knowing which salon to trust. Hair is a delicate matter, and blonde hair is MOST. As part of acclimating myself to the area I began following many local businesses on my social media. Over weeks I began to notice a salon, Asha SalonSpa, continuously show up in my feed, always featuring wonderful work. With no friends locally to turn to, I chose to trust the instincts of the gram, Instagram.
I have to say, I am more than happy with my experience at Asha SalonSpa. I have been to 2 locations, out of 7, both times did not disappoint! The staff from the time I entered the door until the time left was extremely courteous, addressing my every need and comfort. The salon itself was crisp, clean and fresh with modern yet calming decor. My stylists on both occasions were very friendly, efficient fast and AWESOME. They did a wonderful job creating the hair-style that I imagined. Asha SalonSpa has become my go to salon for event & special occasion styles. I cannot wait to go back!
A special thank you to Tony from the Lombard location and Dee from Gold Coast; you brought my dreams to life!
