I had the pleasure of taking a tour of the Colorado Springs based
Griffith Centers for Children facility!
I arrived on a beautiful summers day and watched as a few kids hanging out on the front steps of the building laughed and joked around- an instant testament to how at ease the Griffith Center makes these kids feel, giving them a place that feels like home.
I met the board members in the entrance and we discussed what they could expect during the video and what I should expect on the tour.
After introductions, the Residential Clinical Director, Kris, and I embarked on the tour of their grounds. We Discussed the history of the Griffith Centers and their mission-
Though their history goes back over a hundred years, the Colorado Springs Offices were only established in 2011!
Originally established as the Denver Public Opportunity School in 1916 by Miss Emily Griffith, she dreamed to bring basic and vocational
education to adults, children, and immigrants.
emotionally troubled children more easily during the turn of the century, we can see the need for the Griffith Centers new innovative programs to reach additional children. The Griffith Center eventually merged with CHINS UP to offer community-based programs, including foster homes, adoption, and family preservation services. As the importance of integrating children back into the community grew, in 2016, they decided to open a Transitional Skills Program for youth who have completed their intensive treatment and are now ready to leave the center. This program guides them through job searches, graduating from high school or obtaining their GED, and finding an apartment.
They are able to offer families a warm and comfortable environment in which to receive services through the Griffith Centers family preservation program and conduct supervised visitations when needed. They provide residential homes, group homes, and independent living alongside their transition skills programs, and their fully accredited, on grounds, school!
" Griffith Centers for Children, Chins Up (GCC) provides community programs such as family preservation, day treatment, education, truancy prevention, and counseling services. In addition, we provide residential-based programs such as foster care, shared family care, adoption, group homes, residential treatment, and independent living services. Today we are able to provide healing and hope to thousands as a nonprofit agency. "
What began as a short-term shelter is now an organization that touches the lives of over 1,500 children and their families.
Though I can't play you the video I spliced together (we've got to protect the kids in the video)
I can tell you- Miguel sang one of his original songs, "Call Me Home", and it was haunting!
Everyone was fell silent. Darkness fell over the room. The video started to play and he put his heart out for us all to see. I am so proud that I was lucky enough to participate and can't wait for next year's Gala!

2018, 5th Annual Griffith's Kitchen Gala
" The Gala is a culinary competition, benefiting Griffith Centers for Children Chins Up, which pairs local chefs with Griffith Center's youth to create unique culinary masterpieces!
Each chef team will be critiqued by a panel of judges for taste, creativity, and appearance.
All youth participating in the competition are either currently enrolled in the culinary program at GCC or have participated prior to their successful completion of the program. "
