Our June charity spotlight is the Junior League of Greater Fort Lauderdale. Junior Leagues are organizations of women committed to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women, and improving the communities through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. The purpose of this nonprofit organization is purely educational and charitable. They train thousands of women to address community needs and to take on leadership roles at every level. I served on the board of the Junior League chapter in Fort Myers and can say that I had the chance to make a difference, learn new skills and make lots of valuable connections and friends.
A Long History of Impact
The Junior League of Greater Fort Lauderdale was organized in 1937 as the Fort Lauderdale Junior Service League to provide the community with willing volunteers in civic and child welfare work. The first project was assisting Mrs. Parson's Day Nursery for working mothers. The Nursery is now known as Jack and Jill Children's Center. The League has created several of Broward County's top charitable organizations. Over their 80 year history, they have invested millions of dollars, matched by millions of volunteer hours, in improving the lives of people right here in Broward County.
The following is a list of some of the organizations that the Junior League of Greater Fort Lauderdale has created.
Riverwalk Run: Join the Junior League of Greater Fort Lauderdale each year as they run along the New River and the historic neighborhood of Rio Vista during the Riverwalk Run! This race supports the Junior League’s efforts in raising funds for important community causes such as Human Trafficking Awareness, Childhood Fitness and Nutrition, and more!
Cook book sales is a tradition in Junior League. The Junior League of Greater Fort Lauderdale offers a collection of cookbooks for purchase as a fundraiser where all proceeds support community projects.. The cookbooks make great gifts for everyone, teachers, hostesses, new homeowners, out of town wedding guests or just to say thank you.
Playstation at Holiday Park: In collaboration with the City of Fort Lauderdale, the Junior League built a signature playground facility within the refurbished Holiday Park Complex. The league raised $200,000 to build the train-themed playground. The playground is fully ADA compliant with wheelchair access and swings for young children with special needs.
Brick and tree dedications are for sale to anyone who wishes to support the playground. They are living and lasting memorials for new babies, birthdays, pets and athletic achievements. Proceeds from these sales benefit the playground and Junior League community outreach projects locally!"
Being a Member
The Junior League of Greater Fort Lauderdale seeks to recruit members who demonstrate an interest and commitment to volunteerism and community service. Reasons to join:
Benefits to Float Wellness
What is Float Wellness
Float Wellness, as you may have gathered by the name, involves floating in water. Typically a pod or room that is designed for short term sensory deprivation. The floating experience is typically done for 90 minutes or more in body-temperature salt water in a room devoid of light and sound. This is usually done within a large tank of super-saturated magnesium water that makes you completely buoyant. So no stressing over if you will drown should you fall asleep!
The experience has been around for a long time but recently gained popularity among elite athletes, those who struggle with stress, and people with various health problems.
The concept is that floating reduces external stimuli as much as possible to help the body achieve a natural restorative state. Some people compare the experience of floating to meditation or yoga.

It was like the stress melted out of my mind and I was just there, with no thoughts, no worries, not time.
Float8 Wellness Lounge is giving away a FREE Float at our June 28th Girls Night Out "Fiesta" Networking Social, so come make new friends, learn about unique local businesses and enter for a chance to win an hour of peaceful relaxation!
