I was so excited when an ad for Door Dash popped up in my newsfeed. Then I found a promo for $1 deliveries for 30 days. Super exciting, right? Wrong. I decided to place my first order when I was on my own for dinner one night. I started an order from the local Chinese restaurant. What I get there is usually about $14. When I got to the cart, I double-checked the delivery fee and then noticed the total. The deliver fee was in fact $1, but my order total was $23 and change.
While the increased cost was displayed in the food items, the fact of the matter is that having the food delivered was going to cost me an extra $9! For $9 I would get out of my pajamas and drive myself 2 miles up the road.
So does the restaurant charge the service a higher rate than they charge me walking in? Or does the delivery service tack on extra money to cover mistakes in their pricing? Either way, we can't be sure that we aren't being mislead.
I cannot stress enough the importance of being an informed consumer. Check your receipts. Check your cart when you shop online. Then check the order confirmation too. Be cautious and know where your money is going!
At Home by Ashley Furniture arrived in our region several years ago, but I just made it in for the first time over the weekend. My first impression - overwhelming. Pictured above is the Pineville location, located behind Carolina Place Mall. This place is H-U-G-E, HUGE! It is very much like a HomeGoods in that there are many random things and not necessarily two or more of everything, so the hunt is real. However, the organization is MUCH better than a HomeGoods or Marshall's. Everything is in categories with clear signage hanging from the ceiling. They have tons of furniture (not cheap), decor, seasonal items, pillows, rugs, paintings, photographs, organization, kitchen utensils, dishes and silverware, cups and mugs galore. The selection was overwhelming.
My favorite find was the tobacco baskets, also pictured above. The square basket on the bottom shelf was $29.99. Not too bad, but after a quick look at Hobby Lobby, the same basket was on sale for $24.99. Had they not been on sale this week at Hobby Lobby, these would have been a good deal (LINKED BELOW).
My thoughts on At Home: an overwhelming amount of items, organized well, at moderate to slightly over-priced, but an interior decorator's dream.
My advice: Always compare prices before making a purchase, but certainly on standard items. Use the Amazon app to quickly scan barcodes on name-brand items to see what they are selling for online. Sometimes Amazon is a better deal, but sometimes it is not. Give the item a quick Google and check the shopping tab to compare prices from other retailers. If you're in a hurry, or the store with the better price is not in your immediate area, don't drive and spend more in gas than the few dollars you will save by purchasing there instead. SHOP SMART.
