We are excited to be featuring Youth Sail Virginia, Inc as our featured charity for June 24 at Bar Louie in Hampton. Youth Sail Virginia, Inc offers practice and regatta venue for area high school sailing teams from our location at historic Fort Monroe in Hampton, VA. With the support from the City of Hampton, a pier was built on Mill Creek for community access, with Youth Sailing Virginia at the heart of the boating center. Our plan is to expand by offering learn-to-sail programs in conjunction with the Peninsula YMCA and Hampton Parks and Recreation.
Located in the shallow waters of Mill Creek in Fort Monroe, Youth Sailing Virginia provides a safe area from other boat traffic for our children to practice an learn the fundamentals of sailing. This experience alone is one way your children will learn the importance of water skills off land and in the water.
Youth Sail Virginia has for hosted regional and national championships including fall of October 2015’s, MASSA Fall Fleet Race Regatta II that included two days of sailing with 18 teams from Virginia, Maryland, New York, and New Jersey in conjunction with SAIL Fort Monroe. Most recently Youth Sail Virginia connected with Christopher Newport University and University of Virginia Sailing Teams during the spring semester. This allowed our sailors to experience college level coaching while on the water!
Come to speak and learn more with members of Youth Sail Virginia Inc at our upcoming Bar Louie Summer Ladies Night Out in Hampton on June 24, 2019, to learn more how you can be involved with this amazing group. . It's getting warmer here in Hampton Roads! So you know what that means, play in and around water! Hampton Roads is one area known for thrills and excitement especially with water with great beaches and water parks. But like most of use many of us might have access to public or private pools. Safety is our number one priority as parents and homeowners that we keep our kids and guest safe.
One disturbing fact I learned was, 77% of accidental drownings, the child had been seen 5-minutes or less before being missed. All this is and around water.. Here are some tips for keeping their kiddos safe.
A must for any pool! Install high locks with alarms
Put locks on doors and windows that are high and out of reach. Some drownings happen because a parent didn’t know their toddler figured out the door knob. Don’t forget sliding glass doors as well. Families should install simple contact alarms for doors and windows that lead to the pool.
Install Pool safety fence
One of the most reassuring steps is installing a pool fence. Fences should be at least 4′ tall and have a self-closing, self-latching gate. Mesh pool safety fences, like Life Saver Pool Fence, flaunt an effective layer of protection with a transparent and aesthetically pleasing look.
Get eyes out near water
When children are in the pool, assign one person as a designated Water Watcher. Active supervision means sitting close to the pool with your full attention on the child/children. Do a regular headcount never leave young kids unattended.
Teach your kids how to swim
All children should receive swimming lessons. Some organizations even offer training for infants to roll over and float, and to swim to the edge of the pool in case they fall in. Your local YMCA or town recreation center is good for giving kids lessons.
All parents and homeowners should know CPR
Every adult should be trained in CPR. Check out community centers for classes. This training can make the difference between life, permanent disability, and death.
