I am a person who always has their phone or computer at arms reach. There is never a moment where I do not have some sort of technology in my hand. But summer is here and so are the people who I care about more in my space. They see how I am when It comes to my phone and computer. But, what is a girl to do when working on your phones and computers are your way of life?
Simply one must unplug!
I did this one day this past week where I did unplugged for the day and let me tell you it made all the difference in my way of life. At least for that day! Here are some tips you can use to unplug yourself from technology, even if for just an hour!
Don’t Grab for your Phone or Device First thing in the AM- Get up exercise, shower, dress, have breakfast with the family, go through your morning routine. All this can happen without the sounds from the TV, cell phone pinging and lit up computer screens. One change can make the difference and in the beginning, you will hate the change, but you will learn to regain your focus. Begin by starting this routine once a week and move to adding more days after you mastered a task. Once you have completed the important task you can then schedule the times you need to check emails and social media.
Schedule your technology time- I find I get consumed in my phone or computer and I totally forget what I was doing before I got on there. This is bad. I have gotten into many arguments with those I love over this. But if you schedule the times you will be on your devices less and the amounts of arguments will cease.
Set Airplane Mode on your phone- you know that airplane button on your phone you use when you’re on the plane? Yea you can use this when not traveling the friendly skies. It’s a great way to unplug quickly without cellular distractions. Food for thought, if you use this in area with Wi-Fi then you will not be completely unplugged.
Let your weekends be your “You” time! If your weekends are the times you spend with family then, don’t waste your time on your phone. Yea this is hard, especially for me. The weekend is when most of my family on social media reaches out to me and I am on there just as I was during the workweek on all day. You will need to make rules to how this would apply on weekend. Make your phone or computer a “no touch” device unless it is at the scheduled times.
Leave your Device in a secure location- when all else fails; leave your phone in a secure place. I did that one day leaving my phone at home getting a Mani/Pedi. Can I tell you I had total anxiety for like the first 10 minutes? But after I sat down and relaxed, I mean really relaxed it really was an enjoyable experience. My family was upset with me, and the emails remained unanswered but I loved my chair massage and my nails were on point, due to no distractions.
All you need is a little bit of change. You will begin to notice the feeling of your dependence on your technology even if just for one hour!
