Tell us about your business and how you became the business woman you are today. (What motivated you, how do you keep a positive outlook, etc)
I own a self-care tech company called Mind Star Health. Our soon-to-be-released app Mind Star tracks users self-care data and rewards usersfor building a routine and checking in. The more you check-in, the more points or stars you earn and the more rewards you unlock from participating businesses! We are more than a self-care app, I publicly speak to various audiences about the importance of self-care, helping people become aware of their self-care limiting beliefs. We also tackle common self-care misconceptions with our weekly self-care newsletter. My personal experience of overcoming certain mental illnesses, managing current mental illnesses, our three kids and those in my life who suffer with mental illness motivate me ...but the biggest motivators I have are my inner child and Jesus. The little girl within me, the one with the big dreams and even bigger heart - this is all for her and Jesus, first and foremost. The universe took something terrible and made something beautiful out of ashes - Mind Star.
Describe yourself in 3 words: Intelligent, Witty, Empath
What do you consider your greatest professional achievement?
I am an award-winning journalist with six Missouri Press Association awards, that's been a highlight. Honestly, anytime a door opens up for Mind Star, an opportunity that comes my way that's huge to me. The opportunity might not pan out but if a door opens ... that means there will be more doors opening in the future. And every rejection is a just a redirection.
What are your professional goals for the next six months?
25,000 Mind Star downloads, 500 plus health professionals on the Help page, some bad ass rewards for our users, partnerships with hospitals and clinics using the app as a tool for patients, and I'm preparing my first Ted Talk about self-care misconceptions :)
What profession other than your own would you like to attempt?
Being a public speaker is becoming more of an interest for me. I'm being approached more and more about being a self-care specialist or coach, and public speaking. I'd like to explore that avenue more. One that's way out there would be a food critic. How fun would that be?!
How do you maintain a work/life balance?
Following a strict a self-care routine ;), managing my energy (learning to say "no"and remembering that nothing is more important than family. The business email/phone call really can wait until tomorrow. It really can. You have to make a lot of sacrifices as a momprenuer, so I try to choose my family over work as much as I possibly can. If I can't, I give my family an incentive. "Let mommy work really hard this week and on Friday we go to pool!" I then make sure I do everything I can to keep that promise. Last month, I made that promise and when Friday came it was storming. No bummed faces, we went to an indoor pool instead! I want them to see what it really takes to follow your dreams but I also want them to know that at the end of the day, your loved ones are much more important than success.
What websites do you visit everyday? when I need a mental break - Scarymommy, People, Buzzfeed or I read the reviews of products on Amazon. When I want to be informed - Wash Post, New York Times.
What are your top three favorite places/things to do in Kansas City?
Eat BBQ is number one - I mean, we DO have the BEST in BBQ in the U.S. hands down Q39 and Joe's KC are my top two faves!
Casually coming across a farmer's market, craft fair, art show. My fave is to just drive around and find some cute niche store to check out. There's so much going on in KC, something every weekend. My favorite stores are aromatherapy soap and candle stores. I wouldn't be productive if I lived close to one but I would smell amazing all the time.
I've been to a handful of concerts, I have an eclectic taste in music, so I have been to various venues for live music, and I have had an amazing time every single time. My goal next year is to go to more live shows. A lot of great performers come to KC!
What is your goal for retirement?
I tell people it's a owning a few beach front properties on some island, well I sell coconut candy for fun and people think I'm this cute old crazy lady that sells candy when I'm secretly a rich grannie. :)
But in all honesty, it's freedom. Financial freedom is the ultimate goal so I can travel, see the world and to give back and be involved in the volunteer community as I want. That's the dream. Making enough financially that I can start some non profits and give back in big ways
Do you have any advice for women who would like to start their own company?
My advice is that when everything seems to be falling apart, try to think of it as if everything is falling into place. The dark times never last, and if everything fails then at least you tried - you will not have the regret of not trying on your shoulders. And failing does not mean you are failure. Rejection and failure is a part of life. When you can't hang on any more, hang on a little bit longer - what you need comes in right when you really need it. And all you can do is try, try for yourself, for your inner child, she's rooting for her. Honor your inner child and go for it, take risks, the only person holding you back is yourself. I'm here with you and I'm rooting for you.
,Hey there ladies!! I will be doing a new series on Friday's where we meet influential, independent, strong, and determined women! This Friday we will meet Kacie aka Skinhaus. Tell us about your business and how you became the business woman you are today. (What motivated you, how do you keep a positive outlook, etc): My business is 4 1/2 years old. I became the business I am today because I have always wanted to help people feel better about themselves and I realized that the industry was doing the opposite. It was causing people to feel more insecure. So I decided to change that, one person at a time.

I would like to first and foremost thank Ginger for attending our Ladies Night Out she did an amazing job and had a a great time mingling with everyone. We are hoping to have her back next month for our July LNO! You will not want to miss this as we are planning on having games, giveaways and much more!
Now on to Coach's Bar and Grill... You all are my audience and I give you my 100% honesty all day everyday 365/7 and I can honestly say WE will NEVER be back at Coach's Bar & Grill on 135th. Coach's has one of their managers by the name of Tori to specifically thank for us no longer doing business with their establishment. Our vendor Ginger has a tool box that stacks three high full of products and a pulley tote full of sample products. Prior to taking her things out of the car we asked the rooftop hostess how we could get her heavy items up to the roof. They informed us there was an elevator, GREAT! we exclaimed. So we went to her car to grab her items and when inside asked the downstairs hostess where the elevator was. Tori over heard us and immediately told us the elevator is for handicap only and we can take the items up the stairs. Ginger and I looked at each other in disbelief that she would be so cold to us having all of these items and not being allowed to use the elevator.
Keep your tea cups in your hands! Part 2 is being served in just a few!
So as stated in my last blog post I have been on a quest for a more natural lifestyle. I recently tried Schmidt's and I was thoroughly impressed in the beginning. After the first month I started noticing that where ever I put the deodorant I would have a horrible itch. So I figured maybe there's a nut allergen in the deodorant, why did I check for this you ask well I am allergic to nuts so I always have to check ingredients to see if there are any nuts or nut traces in the products. Anyway, I checked the ingredients and no nut or nut traces.
I have Eczema and I know when it is flared up because my skin is unbearably itchy, I checked my underarms and sure enough they were darker than normal and it was at this moment I knew this I had to throw this deodorant out the window fast! I really wanted to like the product and thought I had found a forever friend in the Rose + Vanilla scent but we have to part ways as it is so not cute to walk around scratching your pits lol. I recently purchased Love Beauty and Planet in the scent Murumuru Butter & Rose. It has a sweet fragrance, it actually smells like roses... Who knew?! As you know I will give you and update with nothing less than my 100% honesty.
Are you looking to get a natural deodorants? Maybe you've tried some and have had some good or bad experiences. Share them here with me below!
First of all round of applause to you all for showing an amazing and overwhelming amount of support to Housewives in the City KC! We had such an amazing time getting to know each other. Until June 6th @5:30
So I have been on a quest to incorporate more natural products into my life. Switching from tampons to cups, changing my eating habits (future blog post) and now I am changing deodorants. As we all know its been a proven fact that the aluminum in deodorants have been linked to causing breast cancer. We staying away from all that negativity in 2019 sis!
I started with Toms, it has some aluminum but it was my starter to weeing myself off of the main stream deodorants. One day at Costco I saw a three pack of a natural deodorant for $9.99, the brand name is Schmidt's. I held on to the brand for a while b/c I was nervous about the deodorant not working or wearing off.
I recently tried the Rose + Vanilla deodorant and I must say I was thoroughly impressed. With one swipe up and down and one directly in the middle of my pit right to left it kept me fresh all day into the night. I was/am excited to go on this new journey and other new journeys with more holistic/ natural products.
How does it work? With the Schmidt's brand you have to hold the deodorant to you arm put for maybe 5-10 seconds so that it can warm up to the body. After that just do two swipes, you should be good all day but it depends on your body. Be sure to not put on too much though as it will absorb into your body to keep you fresh but the access will cause white balls to form underneath your pits. Nobody wants to be smelly so do what I am currently doing carry the deodorant with you in your purse until you find your comfortable amount of deodorant to use.
Stay Fresh Ladies
Probably the grossest thing we have going on with the female body, wither its three days or seven we all dislike to see Aunt Flow come to town. Whats even more gross is how much money we spend on pads and tampons.
I am a seven day person and I have what I thought was a heavy flow. I literally purchase every size of tampon plus pads just to get through a cycle. Its disgusting to me how much money I spend on that stuff, like insurance needs to pay for at least half of the cost for pads and tampons b/c we certainly need them to get through life, am I right about it!?! Any who I remember a year or two ago a friend an I were talking about Diva Cups. during that time I was certainly grossed out about a cup and blood and just everything about it was gross even the price. Well... needless to say I tried the diva cup during my last cycle lol. Its was the grossest yet intriguing experience. To know more keep reading....
So the day I decided to use the cup I went to my local target and low and behold the cup was actually on sale! it was $4 off but $4 is $4 lol. The cups normally retail for $37 but I got one for $34. it was very easy to use. Now you have two options. Cup size 1 or 2. Cup size one is for women UNDER 30. Cup size two is for women 30+ and/or who have had children. I was very confused because Ia a little over 30 but I have never had children so I wasn't sure which cup I should get. I reluctantly picked up cup size 2 because of teh age range and I kind of wonder should I have gotten size one instead.
Straight out of the package I boiled the cup in hot water for five minutes. I of course waited before using it but when I did use it so that it wouldn't feel so rough I ran it under luke warm water to lubricate it. Insertion was very simple but removal was very traumatic for me simply because the rim of the cup is so thick I felt EVERYTHING (I used tissue to help with removal because Im a germaphobe like that). Other than that my experience with the cup was great. I will spare you ALL the detail but I did stop using it after the fourth day b/c the removal was just too much discomfort for me. Tampax is making a cup and I definitely will be trying that because they have taken all the positives and negatives of the other cups that are out on the market and have made a super cup! Oddly enough I am excited about the Tampax cup because Tampax is the leader of the period world and they do not have that suck thick rim like the diva cups.
Have you tried the Diva cup before? Have you thought about trying a cup of any kind? Maybe You use another brand of cup such as Lunette, Venus, Lena? Lets talk about your experiences below!
It been's a long time I shouldn't a left you, without a dope blog to vibe to. Lol, just testing out my rapping skills. I think I'll stick to planning events. Anyway I am sorry for leaving you hanging but I will address that in a different blog.
So lets get into why you are here Part 4 of the hair blog length retention! I am personally on a quest to grow my hair to elbow length. One thing I will say that is key in length retention is getting your end clipped and baby(ing) those ends. I went on a two year no heat hair journey and when I got my ends clipped I only lost an inch no more than an inch and a half of hair because I made sure to always moisturize my ends. I am currently starting a three year no heat journey, I will let you know how that goes in future blogs.
Next, protective styling. I use to get sew-ins, braids, twists and things like that but I began to think how is that really helping my hair grow? The tension of pulling your hair for braids that might last a month or two depending on how well you take care of your hair. Sew-In's OHEMGEE braids are tight, then sewing the hair onto the braids, then don't add the net. forget sleeping for a few days sis, lol The folks of yesterday use to say pulling the hair makes the hair grow but in reality you can get traction alopecia, from folks who are not aware of how tight they are pulling your hair. Crochets are not the best form of protective styling either BUT it is somewhat of a better than those mentioned above. This spring/summer season I am rocking mini twists with my own hair. I am loving the ease of the style from beginning to end its a two hour style and can last for maybe two-three weeks if you know how to take care of your hair.
Now should you decide to join me in a no heat journey and you want to get a protective style such a braids and stuff. After washing and conditioning plat your hair. You can do two plats or do maybe six-eight individual plats. Let the hair dry over night and pick it out the next day or whenever you are getting your hair done. Using this method will be give you the blow out look without all the heat.
If you made it to the end of this blog and my previous blogs YOU ARE A REAL ONE! and I appreciate you for your love and support. Share this blog if you care
Hey, Girl, Hey!
So lets just get into this! What have we learned? Listening to our hair is a MAJOR KEY and through research finding the proper products is what brings the life into our hair. So now lets talk products! Personally I only use a few products and I typically don't vary because they what work for my hair, they bring mega moisture to my hair so why fix it if it ain't broke ya know?? If and when I do change products it's because I have changed shampoo and conditioner but my main products will remain the same unless my hair says differently. So In my latest natural hair routine, this is what I use for my hair, in this order;
Pre-poo: Oil Mix + Water: I mix several different oils (avocado, grape seed, extra virgin olive, black caster, peppermint, and tea tree) I mix them in a color bottle and shake, shake, shake. Some use coconut oil to pre-poo, others use conditioner, whichever should still help you achieve the same results. I just personally like my mix. I simply section my hair into four sections, wet and detangle from ends to root, coat my hair making sure to baby my ends and depending upon what I am doing I will put a plastic bag and my bonnet on, I might do a 30 min pre-poo or it might be 12 hours, lol. It just depends on the mood.
*Side note* Even when I go to the salon now, I make sure to pre-poo my hair. it just seals in so much moisture and helps with length retention.
Shampoo & Hair Mask: *Disclaimer* the products I use are a little costly but do your research! Pacifica Pineapple Curls(Curl Defining)Shampoo and Pacifica Pineapple Hydrate Curl Nourishing Mask. If you go to purchase these products DO NOT and I mean DO NOT purchase the Pacifica Pineapple Nourishing Curls Conditioner. It re-dries and the hair and makes it completely unmanageable. Personally I deep condition with every wash, some will say you don't have to with every wash, I say natural hair thrives on moisture so it cant hurt. To each her own, mmmmmmkay!
Mask #2: Garnier Fructis Smoothing Treat 1 minute Hair Mask + Avocado extract. Now, I do not use both hair masks in my hair, I use this one when I feel like it and because I'm trying to save my other mask since it was on clearance at Target and is now gone. =(. I love this product because I can use it as a two-in-one! I can use it as a deep conditioner (1 minute or longer) and I have also used it as a one product wash-n-go.
The PERFECT TWIST OUT: Here's what I use to achieve the PERFECT TWIST OUT, these products have never failed me and I believe they NEVER will! The order they are listed is the order in which I use them.
Shea Moisture Sugarcane Extract & Meadowfoam Seed Silicone Free Miracle Style Leave-In Treatment w/ Marshmallow Root + Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie + Carol's Daughter Hair Honey Mimosa.
I know you're reading this like... That's it... YES SIS THAT IS LITERALLY IT! I have used these three simple products for a wash-n-go plus some eco, twist out, braid out, bantu knot out out and most recently a roller set. The products never fail me and my hair is always left feeling moisturized and is always defined!
Part 4 Lets talk Length Retention,
RivALZ began in the fall of 2005 as Blondes vs. Brunettes®, a flag football event founded by a group of professional women: Sara Abbott, Andrea Rodgers, Kristyn Noeth, Kate Stukenberg and Meredith Riddle Chastang. The founders of the event have a personal connection to Alzheimer’s and designed the event to drive awareness among a younger audience while raising funds for the Alzheimer’s Association. Since the inaugural game in Washington, D.C., the event has grown to more than 40 cities, raising more than $5 million and bringing thousands of new supporters to the cause.
Alzheimer's Association RivALZ is a volunteer-driven event that engages young professionals in friendly but fierce flag football games around the country. As part of the competition, teams are organized around age-old rivalries — East vs. West, Blondes vs. Brunettes, City vs. Suburbs — that inspire fundraising, awareness and action in the fight against Alzheimer's disease.
In 2014, to accommodate nationwide growth, “Blondes vs. Brunettes” grew into “RivALZ,” empowering participants to choose the rivalry around which to organize their teams. The funds raised through RivALZ benefit the care, support and research efforts of the Alzheimer’s Association.
We would like to Thank the ladies of RivALZ for partcipating in this months Girls Night Out! If you or someone you know would like to participate or donate to RivALZ Click the Link Below! Lets Fight together to beat Alzheimer's Disease!
