My husband and I are always looking for things to (1) do as a family and (2) experiences that are different, unique, and fun...yet secretly educational. We came upon the Lichterman Nature Center in Memphis. Now, one may not think February as the best time to check out a nature center but you would be very surprised. It was actually the PERFECT day for it. Not hot or humid. Overcast but no rain. Just enough to encourage people to lay low at home and not venture out! Cool!! More for us!
The trails were unoccupied. The birds were chirping. The geese and ducks were gliding through open waters. And the fun activities inside were calling our names! Nothing to do but take on an appreciation for nature, in it's purest form, in unlikely circumstances, and enjoy time spent exploring our new adventure together.
Inside, there are insects, reptiles and amphibians, oh my! So much to look at!! And because we were there on a day that others thought to be less optimal, We were introduced to some funky looking insect that I, personally, was all set with, but the kids were infatuated. We were also able to watch the box turtles eat their lunch, that looked...questionable at best. The kids learned all about turtles and how they live, eat, etc. It was like a private tour of the world of animals!
Throughout the day, we found fun opportunities here and there to reinforce what our kids are learning in school. For our 7 year old, he read signs along the trail, learned about the seasons, habitats, and different species. Our 2 year old worked on her colors, numbers and letter recognition skills. And, wouldn't you know...they didn't even realize they were learning!
We left having loved another day spent together, fresh air in our lungs, new found knowledge in our brains, and, perhaps more importantly, looooong naps in our future. Can't wait to go back!
Here are some pictures from our day.
