September 10 marked a very tragic day as Florida braced for the imminent natural disaster named Hurricane Irma. It ripped through much of Florida as it moved onward up Southeast US; after taking on the Caribbean since August 30 and winning that battle… leaving much devastation behind. Homes and businesses were leveled and destroyed and lives were changed (and they still are for a long journey ahead; some more severe than others) as families and businesses alike were forced to rebuild from ground zero. I guess I couldn’t have chosen a better day to celebrate a Montgomery County Housewives event, could I have?
The ambiance inside the Olney Winery on that Sunday evening was different though. I felt the warmth, a sense of welcoming and a safe place for many to gather and become one; all of different backgrounds, ages, careers, geographies (around MOCO and beyond) yet there was a strong sense of community. We took in the beautiful atmosphere of the Olney Winery, enjoyed their wide array of Olney Winery wines but didn’t stop thinking of those impacted by this natural disaster; one among many affecting our nation and our entire world. For each bottle of wine purchased “To Go”, Montgomery County Housewives pledged a dollar donation to victims of Hurricane Irma by way of our voted upon charity. That charity, Habitat for Humanity, received a $50 donation because we wanted to round up. It wasn’t a ton of money, but it was a gesture that is evidence of the kindness and generosity that our group promotes; a gesture that has been multiplied many times over.
So, I owe a special thank you to our guests that joined us despite the circumstances and those that took home an extra bottle or two “for the cause”. Many guests spoke of family members or friends they had lost contact with. Another, “sweet as pie” young woman, was here visiting from the Floridian city she was instructed to evacuate. It personally brought me joy to share this event with her; as well as one of the most meaningful hugs and well-wishes I gave that evening. The mere fact that she thoroughly enjoyed this event on one of her last evenings in Maryland before returning back to her home in Florida was justification enough for me that there was a reason that “the show must go on” that crisp Sunday, September 10 evening.
I also owe a special thank you to the amazing manager of the Olney Winery; Ed. He was a gem to work with and very generous to stock our door prize gift basket with a private wine tasting for two; as well as some logo’d Olney Winery glasses. Also included were a few other goodies; including two of my favorite Olney Wines (I’d share those names, but I want you to go back in and choose your own favorites!)! Finally, thank you to the AMAZING staff that worked the winery like a well-oiled machine. They served guests with smiles, genuine kindness and warmth and tons of wine knowledge. This special attention was given to their regular staff, pop-in orders for to-go bottles and our full house of guests throughout the course of the night. They handled it all seamlessly. I didn’t expect anything less from this reputable business, BUT they did just get done hosting a Bridal Shower right before my event started! This just goes to show that this team is always “on” and always ready to deliver; no matter what the occasion and no matter what it takes. What a perfect reason to book your event or wine tasting there today!

NONPROFIT: Rukundo International LIKE | Website | Contact Us
Rukundo International was our feature nonprofit for our networking happy hour at Olney Winery. It was such an amazing coincidence because the Olney Winery is actually the winery that provides the Runkundo International labeled wine! (Small world, huh?!) We were overly elated to help Rukundo collect shoes for their annual shoe drive. The shoes collected from the drive create enterprise in Rukundo’s sponsored village: Kabale Uganda. Other shoes are repurposed or donated while the rest are sold for funds that ultimately support Rukundo’s development and growth of their primary school in Kabale. Andrea Sedlock, the Founder of this amazing organization, with nearly 0% overhead, never ceases to amaze me with the selflessness in which her and her husband and their volunteers endlessly serve the village of Kabale, Uganda with projects focused around education, clean water, basic health training, girls’ empowerment and more! There are so many ways to continue to serve this organization. Please check out their organization below to consider them as you continue to seek opportunities to serve and donate money and tangible items. They were able to collect approximately 92 pair of shoes and promote for their yard sale that generated about $2,000 that will benefit this upcoming school that is so close to opening its doors to underprivileged children awaiting the opportunity to learn and become productive members of society in their village!
