We are so excited to share our interview with this Boss Lady, Leslie Smith Walker owner of Art in Motion Dance Studio. I have become a fan of the studio and classes she teaches. I enjoy watching her teach classes. I was just reading an article published by Forbes yesterday that stated "A woman alone has power; collectively women have impact". I truly believe that together, women can make a difference. The article further stated "There is research that shows women in particular benefit from collaboration over competition. Study after study shows women who support women are more successful in business."
Leslie's dance moves are memorizing to watch.....She has such style & grace on the dance floor. I see her every Saturday, but never really got the chance to pick her brain and hear her plans. Here goes....
Leslie has been around for years! Someone has described her as a "GOAT" (Greatest of All Time). Dance is a universal language and everyone has the ability to speak it. Dance teaches people artistic expression. It also has a wide range of physical and mental benefits including: improved condition of your heart and lungs. increased muscular strength, endurance and motor fitness. increased aerobic fitness.
Tell us about your business and how you became the successful business woman you are today
Established May 16, 1998, A.I.M. is a dance program designed for ages 3 years to adult to provide instruction and training in all the various dance art forms, to develop exceptional dance skills, and individual artistic expression. Most importantly, we want to instill in our kids the self-esteem and confidence they will need to achieve their goals. Owning my own dance studio is something I've always wanted to do since I was a little girl. During our dance season I put in approximately 8 - 9 hours per day, 6 days a week working. I owe my success to God, my instructor and mentor, Syrell Daniel, and the support of my family and friends over the years. My love of dance and teaching kids is what continues to motivate me each and every day to give my all.
Describe yourself in three words:
Loving, Passionate, and Persevering....
What do you consider your greatest professional achievement.
My greatest professional achievement is seeing the success of my students as they get older. Every audition they land, and job they book is confirmation that I'm making a positive difference in helping them achieve their goals. To produce another successful dance production, win our regional and national dance competitions, and to continue assisting my students with their professional goals.
What websites do you visit every day?
Google, Facebook, Essence, and Dance-Teacher.com
What are your top three favorite people/places/things to do in your city?
I love spending time with my family and friends, going to local dance shows in the city, and eating at any of the numerous great restaurants we have in New Orleans.
What is your goal for retirement?
I don't really see myself retiring from dance. I plan on dancing and teaching as long as my body allows me to.
Do you have any advice for women who'd like to start their own company?Any final comments?
Step out on faith and follow your dreams. I'm fortunate to have a career doing what I love to do. If you are passionate about a product or possess a natural talent, then I highly encourage you to find a way to make a living doing what makes you happy.
In conclusion, I think Jay Z said it best in his Boss lyrics "Over here, we measure success by how many people successful next to you. Here we say you broke if everybody else broke except for you
