One second is all it takes to become less reactive and more in tune with the moment. I recently had the opportunity to attend an event where Ms. Harriet Stein, RN, MS was the presenter. Big Toe in the Water. Harriett's passion is teaching groups and individuals how to take steps towards a healthier, more fulfilling life. Harriett did this little exercise that really stuck with me. She had us examine a raisin, smell it, hold it up the light, describe it, then slowly putting it close to our mouths and eventually taking a little bite. The taste was amazing! Truly slow down and appreciate where your food came from and how it got to your plate, it changes how you feel about it. Paying attention to your family, friends, co-workers and every little moment in your life with pause can teach you true appreciation. I remember a time that my son was playing soccer and he came off the field and asked me to put the phone down and just watch the game. That, of course, struck me as a mom and in other ways of my life.
Are you truly listening? When you go to a presentation are you paying attention to the great work somebody put into preparing for this meeting? Are you thinking about dinner or about all of the emails you are missing right now? When a friend is coming to you with their problems are you truly trying to understand what they are feeling or ready to be judgmental? When practicing mindfulness, this is about knowing ourselves. It is not about changing, as much as it is about accepting ourselves with compassion that leads to a life of great understanding.
Practice 10 minutes of relaxation and mindfulness each day. Start by meditating and taking a few quite moments to yourself. Avoid reading emails first thing in the morning. Turn off all notifications. Stop multitasking, it keeps you under pressure and you drift from one task to another. Schedule a mindfulness check-up with yourself every 2 weeks to see how much more engaging you have been and less reactive to stressful situations. Make calculated choices in your daily life and enjoy the small moments in your life that pass by so quickly.

Amy (Ouida) Morik is a native of North Jersey. She graduated from River Dell Regional High School and went on to complete her Bachelor degree in Psychology at Union College and her Masters in Social Work at New York University. Amy worked as a pediatric social worker for about 5 years before taking time to explore other opportunities and life experiences - including having 3 children of her own.
In 2009, with three young children at home, Amy needed to return to the professional arena. She then dedicated her time to her multiple social work jobs. Frustrated that she was out of the home (away from her children) more time than she had planned, Amy was looking for a Plan B.
In 2014 a friend introduced Amy to Rodan + Fields Dermatologists. With a leap of faith and some courage that pushed her out of her comfort zone, Amy accepted her friend's invitation to open up her own business - a skin care franchise with Rodan + Fields. Without realizing the life changing move she had just made, Amy was on her way to true entrepreneurship.
Amy quickly fell in love with Rodan + Fields skin care products and with the smart motivated women she was meeting through this company. Amy had vision to see that this opportunity was what she was looking for to bring her the time freedom she craved. Within one year of beginning her Rodan + Fields business venture, Amy was able to walk away from the multiple jobs that were keeping her from time with her children. She kept one social work position (Amy currently is the social worker at Theraplay, NYC - a sensory gym for preschool age children) and now dedicates the rest of her time to working her Rodan + Fields skin care business from home.

If you are like me you are getting a bit of cabin fever this winter. Brutal cold this Jan 2018! Of course we chose the coldest day of the year to go to a snow mountain! We didn't really care because we needed to get out of the house and get some fresh air. Packed up our layers and drove one hour and 10 min. to the Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort. Amazing Winter Wonderland but also Golf and Hiking in the Summer.
Let me give you a brief overview of my experience... What makes a resort/hotel stand out from all others? SERVICE! From the bellman to the front desk to the restaurant and everyone in between... they were amazing to me and my family. 2 Adults, 2 Children that could get bored easily in the coldest day of the year but guess what, the resort was all ready for us. Cured my cabin fever. Quaint, Historic and Charming building. Pool and Jacuzzi were inviting and warm. Variety of restaurant options was perfect for these picky eaters. The staff playing board games with my kids was so sweet. We walked to the brewery next door where hubby enjoyed the great beer selections. Got a spa massage which was perfection. The rooms were so clean and beds were super comfy. Shawnee Mountain was 8 minutes away and the snow tubing was so much fun.
One night I lost my cell phone and was frantic looking for it when Jimmy saw me. He called the restaurant down the street to see if they had it and yes they found my phone! He volunteered to go get it for me. When he returned I found out that the shuttle was not available and the golf cart wouldn't start so in -10 degrees at night he had walked to get it. I can not express enough how amazing that is. Can't wait to go back this summer! Looking forward to trying the Glamping tents, kayaking on the Delaware and hiking. If anyone is planning a Wedding, Event or just a weekend away...please do it and plan on relaxing and enjoying the view of the Delaware River and beautiful mountains.
Every year our kids wait with bated breath for Dec 24th & 25th. They can’t wait for the traditions of Santa Claus coming and delivering gifts. They always leave him cookies and milk, and a few carrots for his reindeer as well. I do love Christmas but my favorite holiday traditions all happen in the month leading up to Christmas day. Once I have finished my Thanksgiving dinner my attention turns fully to the Christmas season.
My first stop is to a wonderful tree farm in NJ. Along with my husband and children, we pick that perfect tree and all my boys cut it down. I can’t wait to get it home to decorate. Of all the decorations that adorn my home each year, my Christmas decorations are my favorite. From beautiful garland decorated with Red and Gold ornaments, to my beautiful golden reindeer statues, and of course my statuesque Christmas tree decorated with beautiful white lights and ornaments that would impress Martha Stewart. The tree is the true CenterPoint of my decorations.
After my home is beautiful, I love the traditions of making a Gingerbread house each year. I build it but let my little boys decorate it. It looks like a candy and frosting explosion, but I love its Christmas Chaos. That’s part of the fun. Then shortly after the gingerbread house, its chocolate covered pretzel time. We have making these tasty treats for years and the family looks so forward to it. No matter how messy or crazy they are decorated, they are always so delicious.
After all the treats are made I love nothing more than making a cup of tea, (put in a Christmas mug of course) and sitting down with the whole family and watching one of many Christmas movies that we will watch during this month. My favorite is How the Grinch Stole Christmas. We all get in our warm Christmas PJs and watch.
Yes, Christmas is only one day or two if you have a big Christmas Eve tradition, but for me the traditions go on and on all month. Its an amazing time of year and I look forward to spending it with my family and friends. Hope you do as well.
Perfect way to start the Fall Season. Had a great time with amazing ladies at Chakra in Paramus. Thank you to all of the great visitors we had come through early for happy hour and got their awesome swag bags! So many of our ladies are in business and were able to network and talk about their own work and experiences. What I love the most are the new friendships that are made. I look forward to hearing many more success stories from future events. Please scroll through the pics, every vendor has a website link. Support these entrepreneurs. More photos and vendor info can be found on my facebook page under events. Photography by Angela and Katie.
Is it weird that I could eat out every single day? I can't be the only one. I know, I know it is very expensive but I am a foodie and I get bored of the quick dinners we make at home. However, that being said, I do like to eat fresh food - not a fast food girl. I am a big supporter of shopping local and I stay within a 5 mile radius of home. Listen, in this area you can eat out at a different place every night of the month. People laugh when I give them the run down of my favorite places and they are all "down the street".
So if you live in my area or feel like taking a little drive to try something new check out my list of restaurants Around The Way....
So many to thank so little time, my August launch event was such a success and I have to thank my wonderful vendors, family, friends and those from the community that came out. The networking between all guests was key to our success. From social media marketing tips by JLopez Enterprises to direct sales advice by our guests and business cards were flowing. We so love our featured photographer Signature Photography. So happy that everyone contributed to our featured Charity Partner, Drive for 65 supporting the Holy Name Cancer Center.
Shopping is the best with a glass of wine in your hand. Thank you to Midland Brew House for the space, great service and drink specials! Everyone loved the atmosphere and great food. I hope you all stopped at the Hackensack UMC Fitness table and signed up for a free week. Let me know when you go, I will meet you there!
Special thanks to the following vendors; Kim at Pure Romance, Debbie at Peachy Perfect, LaurieAnn at MaryKay, Sarah at Stella & Dot, Tanja at Danish Baked Goodies, Jessica with Lipsense and special thanks to Diamond For Love & Rodan and Fields for the great swag! Ulta Beauty provided our ultimate gift bag giveaway, which was amazing! Go to my facebook page for more pics and links to all of the vendors under the Midland Brew House event. Hope to you all at the next event in Sept!
Where do I begin? I love good food, healthy food, comfort food, seafood, ethnic food and the list goes on. Mainly, I love spending time with friends and family around the dinner table. We do eat out a lot but we also love our Sunday dinners at home. Good old fashioned Italian or Colombian Sunday dinners. We love our traditions and mix it up as much as we can. However, I love being out and about trying new places. Some have called me the "concierge" because I know where to go and what to order and probably have a picture or two on my phone of the dishes.
So - where did we go or order from this week? Started with Midland Brew House in Saddle Brook, host of my launch event! I love this trendy gastro-pub style restaurant with two floors, large tvs and a patio. Eclectic dinner options, cool bands/music and my favorite craft beers from local breweries. The bartenders are super attentive and knowledgeable. I loved the crab cake sliders and brick oven pizza most recently.
My sister and the kids came over the next day and we brought home Peruvian food from the quaint Uncle Paulie's in Maywood. Hidden gem of our area. Lomo saltado, salad with avocado and platano maduro. Yes! they deliver too. Next time the rotisserie chicken and arroz chaufa. I put the special salad dressing all over my food, it is the best!
Last but not least, we took the kids to St. Ann's Festival in Hoboken. Quick stop to get pizza while it was raining and we ran into a little place called Benny Tudino's, I had never been there but quickly realized it is old school and famous. On the walls were pictures of famous actors and singers that have been there over the years. Home of the "largest slice" your have ever seen! Of course we got our Zeppoles at the festival and then stopped for homemade ice-cream and iced cappuccinos at Baumgart's Cafe of Edgewater. We took a nice walk on the Hudson River walkway and headed home. I had an amazing weekend with friends and family. I wouldn't have it any other way. So, if you want to know where to go just ask the North Jersey "concierge". Hope you found this information helpful and if you try any of these places let me know what you thought!
Gone are the days of waking up on Saturday morning, grabbing a quick cup of coffee and heading to the soccer field. Gone are the carefree hours spent watching my husband coach our 2 sons and cheering for my boys. My sons have not stopped playing soccer, in fact, they have only just begun their young careers. Our sons have always played for the local recreation teams, but they wanted to take soccer a bit more seriously. That’s why my carefree soccer mom hours are in my rear-view. My husband and I have just taken over our towns travel soccer club. The club has existed in some capacity for over 25 years. The current leadership was ready to retire, and never being ones to sit on the sidelines, my husband and I decided to get involved.
We immediately brought our new club into the 21st century. We re-branded the logo, created a new website, and finally brought the club onto social media. We made our presence felt by marching in the town’s Memorial Day parade under a beautiful new banner. We have held our tryouts and cannot wait to start training for our fall season. So instead of watching from the sidelines I will be coordinating the scheduling of the games, running the snack stand, selling team merchandise, paying referees, and reporting each game to the league website. It will be a lot of work, but my kids and many more will reap the benefits. It will be long hours of coordination, phone calls, and emails, but it will all be worth it. I’ll watch with pride as they glide up and down the field, just like my late father did. He would be so proud. I will remember those easy Saturday mornings, a little envious of how it used to be, but never regretting one single moment.
My name is Juliet Lopez and I am a group travel specialist with 20+ years of hotel and event experience. I was born and raised in NJ and I have a Colombian back round. My husband and I also run our town soccer club. I love keeping busy with my 3 boys and challenging myself professionally every day.
