One second is all it takes to become less reactive and more in tune with the moment. I recently had the opportunity to attend an event where Ms. Harriet Stein, RN, MS was the presenter. Big Toe in the Water. Harriett's passion is teaching groups and individuals how to take steps towards a healthier, more fulfilling life. Harriett did this little exercise that really stuck with me. She had us examine a raisin, smell it, hold it up the light, describe it, then slowly putting it close to our mouths and eventually taking a little bite. The taste was amazing! Truly slow down and appreciate where your food came from and how it got to your plate, it changes how you feel about it. Paying attention to your family, friends, co-workers and every little moment in your life with pause can teach you true appreciation. I remember a time that my son was playing soccer and he came off the field and asked me to put the phone down and just watch the game. That, of course, struck me as a mom and in other ways of my life.
Are you truly listening? When you go to a presentation are you paying attention to the great work somebody put into preparing for this meeting? Are you thinking about dinner or about all of the emails you are missing right now? When a friend is coming to you with their problems are you truly trying to understand what they are feeling or ready to be judgmental? When practicing mindfulness, this is about knowing ourselves. It is not about changing, as much as it is about accepting ourselves with compassion that leads to a life of great understanding.
Practice 10 minutes of relaxation and mindfulness each day. Start by meditating and taking a few quite moments to yourself. Avoid reading emails first thing in the morning. Turn off all notifications. Stop multitasking, it keeps you under pressure and you drift from one task to another. Schedule a mindfulness check-up with yourself every 2 weeks to see how much more engaging you have been and less reactive to stressful situations. Make calculated choices in your daily life and enjoy the small moments in your life that pass by so quickly.
