Our next meet up will be on March 27th at 6pm at the Hyatt Fairfax in Fair Lakes. RSVP today!
(FYI, mark your calendars now -- our meet ups are on the last Thursday of every month in 2014)
Special THANK YOU to Alimond Photography for taking such great pictures last night!
I checked in late Saturday night for a sleep study at 1st Class Diagnostics ... which feels like a 5 star hotel. It was the aboslute WORST night of sleep that I've ever had in my life. With all of those cords and sensors attatched to you and up your nose, it's borderline impossible to sleep. Not to mention the awkward feeling of a camera on you at all times and a microphone attatched to your chest... The guy in the room next to me couldn't make it through the night and left at 3am.
I thought maybe the few glasses of sangria that I had at dinner earlier would help me sleep.. but no go. I didn't fall asleep until 2:30am... and then they kicked me out promptly at 5:30am to go home.
Good news is that I didn't need any help with my breathing!... bad news is that I still snore.
Toyota invited me down to the Washington Auto Show to check out their new fleet. While they have new safety technology and programs for teen drivers, the star of the show was the soon to be released fuel cell vehicle.
I only caught the tail end of the presentation (we were too busy climbing in the Tundras) - but I am pretty sure the spokesperson said that only water is emitted from the exhaust. Aside from the technology, the car was absolutely beautiful. I just migrated into a Hybrid a few years ago... maybe the next move for me is into a fuel cell vehicle!
Special thank you to Toyota for allowing us to be your guest! :)
Monster Jam came through DC for the first time since 2011 and we checked out the opening night show. B was thrilled to see the big trucks wrecking havoc - along with the intermission expos of 4 wheeler racing and dirt bike stunts.
It was loud. REALLY REALLY LOUD. Thankfully, we brought noise cancelling headphones or else the sound of the engines and exhausts would be too much for anyone to handle.
The trucks revved and jumped and drifted and spun - so much fun for the kids and adults to watch! At one point, one of the trucks went over the cars and dirt solely on its back wheels as the crowd cheered. I was impressed!
Of course, the end of the night resulted in a hot pink parking ticket on my car when we got back. Between two college educated, graduate level adults and a third bystander who was also trying to figure it out, we assumed that after reading the 6 posted exceptions, the "2 hour parking between 6-10" meant just that. Especially since there was no digital meter or coin meters on the block. No, of course not. Another $25 check mailed to DC on Monday morning.
I am a Feld Family Ambassador and was provided tickets to the show compliments of FELD Entertainment.
With all of the snow outside... all I can think is that I'll be at the Waldorf Astoria Dubai Palm Jumeirah in 6 weeks! Can't wait to escape to warmer weather!
Coming out of dental school, Dr. Uppasna Chand thought she knew all there was to know about being a dentist, but she soon realized that she couldn't have been more wrong. “Only half of my job is dentistry...the other half is learning how to run a dental practice.” After being an associate for several years, Dr. Chand took hours of continuing education courses which gave her the knowledge and confidence to open her own practice, McLean Family Dentistry.
With the support of her husband, together they worked countless hours to build the foundation of her business. “I'm proud to say we are getting stronger every day! With a strong staff which is dedicated to providing only the best care to our patients, I'm excited to see what the future brings us!”
Describe yourself in three words:
Honest. Funny. Loyal.
What do you consider your greatest professional achievement?
To me, the thought of opening my very own dental practice was no different than climbing Mount Everest. It was though motivation from my family and friends that I really started thinking, ʺYes, I can do this!ʺ I walk into my practice every day just in awe of what we have done as a team.
What are your professional goals for the next six months?
In the next few months, I have a great ambition to grow our practice and get our name out there in the community. I want people to know there is a friendly dentist behind the doors of McLean Family Dentistry.
How does your company stay connected through social media?
We are active on Facebook and Twitter. We've also started a new blog on the McLean Patch.
What profession other than yours would you like to attempt?
I love food... maybe a chef! Also, I've always had an interest in theater and acting. Maybe you'll see me on the big screen someday :)
How do you maintain a work/life balance?
When I come home, any talk about work stops. We love watching movies and tv shows together as well as trying new restaurants. Reading is always a great escape. If you know of any good book recommendations, please let me know! I'm always up for a great read.
What websites do you visit every day?
Oh online shopping...how I love you so! Much to my husband's chagrin, I visit the following sites on a daily basis:
and of course, www.cnn.com.
What is your favorite drink – and where can you find it in Northern Virginia?
My favorite drink in Northern VA? My house...I make an amazing coffee latte. Ask me for the recipe!
What are your top 3 favorite people/places/things in Northern Virginia?
1. I love my nieces and nephew and spending any time I can with them. They are at a fun age where everything is magical and exciting. So even a trip to the local Barnes and Noble is a very eventful occasion for us.
2. I really enjoy downtown Vienna. It hasn't been taken over by massive chain restaurants and still has an old town feel to it. A walk down Church Street can be very refreshing on a Sunday afternoon.
3. Honestly..my house. I love lounging on my couch and catching up with my Real Housewives. Yes..it's my guilty pleasure. :)
What is your goal for retirement?
Oh boy..retirement is such a distant thing in the future that I can't even imagine it. Ask me again in 20 years and I may have an answer.
Do you have any advice for women who would like to start their own company?
You will never feel ready...but you are. Trust me, it only gets harder if you wait. If you really want to do it, you can!

There is a FREE National Symphony Orchestra concert this Saturday, January 11 at 3 p.m. that has kids and families in mind. It takes place at Union Station as part of the NSO’s In Your Neighborhood initiative. Led by NSO Assistant Conductor Ankush Kumar Bahl and featuring WUSA Channel 9's Andrea Roane as host, the National Symphony will perform a full "train-themed" concert.
Prior to the concert from 1:30 – 2:30 p.m. there is a Musical Instrument Petting Zoo where children (and their parents) have the chance to get up close and personal with the orchestral instruments they see professionally played on stage! For more information, check out the NSO's website.
As you know, I frequently post "reader questions" over on the Facebook page for community responses to reader emails.. but sometimes, a professional response to the question is needed. Lately I have been receiving questions about lawyer referrals, custody issues, and legal questions that I simply can't answer.
We recently chatted with Virginia C. Haizlip, a Northern Virginia Family Law attorney at Cole Miller PLLC in Vienna and asked her to give us some tips about commonly asked questions regarding custody issues in Virginia.
"When I meet with a new client, one of their major concerns is how custody of their children will be decided. The first thing to know is that there are two major aspects of custody: legal custody and physical custody.
Legal custody deals with who has the authority to make major decisions, such as academic, medical, and religious decisions, for your children. Legal custody can be joint, meaning that the parents will work together to make decisions, or sole, meaning that one parent will have the authority to make the decisions by him or herself. Physical custody deals with who is actually caring for the children at any given point of time.
Physical custody runs a spectrum from equal parenting time (shared physical custody) to a more traditional schedule where one parent has physical custody and the other parent has visitation according to a prearranged schedule. In extreme cases, one parent may be limited to supervised visitation or no visitation at all. However, that type of arrangement is very rare."
In determining the custody arrangements for a family, the court must consider the best interests of the children. The factors courts in Virginia use can be found in Virginia Code Section 20-124.3. Some of the most important factors the court considers are the roles each parent has played in the children’s lives thus far, the parents’ relative abilities to care for the children, and the parents’ willingness to cooperate with each other in raising the children going forward. If you are faced with a custody dispute, you should review these factors and think about evidence and facts you can use to support your case."
