I've been on a crazy health kick for the past year (could be considered a premature mid-life crisis) since I'm turning 30 in November. We all know that exercise is great for your health, but I'm 100% convinced that your diet is the most important thing to monitor -- especially your protein intake. Research shows that consuming protein in balanced amounts (approximately 25-30 grams) at each meal is beneficial to improving overall health. By distributing high-quality protein throughout the day, you build muscle, reduce body fat, and feel satisfied after a meal or snack thereby reducing mindless eating. So how, exactly, are you supposed to balance your protein to get 30 grams of powerful protein at each meal? I’ve partnered with the Beef Checkoff to come up with a few protein packed-ideas to get you started!
Breakfast might be the most important meal of the day, but let’s face it – sometimes it can be hard to get the protein your body needs in the morning, especially if you’re rushing out the door. Try Beef & Egg Breakfast Mugs, a great on-the-go option. Make a big batch of Basic Country Beef Breakfast Sausage at the beginning to the week, then add eggs for breakfast in a snap. Do you actually have time to sit down to eat? Use leftover steak or shredded beef in Breakfast Skillet Beef Tacos to get your morning protein!
For lunch, you can’t go wrong with Roast Beef Tea Sandwiches on your favorite bread topped with cheese and veggies. Craving some greens? Burger on a Salad Four Ways (American, Asian, Mexican or Greek – choose the variation you like best!) is the perfect balance of fresh veggies and savory, satisfying beef. And portable Mu Shu Steak & Apple Wraps are great on the go – and the kids will love ‘em, too!
Keep on that protein kick through dinnertime with a hearty Saucy Beef with Baked Eggs (splurge by adding a delicious crusty, rustic bread) or grilled Mojo Beef Kabobs topped with a tangy, citrusy sauce (a hit with both kids and adults).
On Tuesday night, I partnered with the new Whole Foods Market Ashburn to throw an AMAZING pre-grand opening party to announce the grand opening date: July 29! Thanks to everyone who came out to Old Ox Brewery to celebrate with us! Check out some of the photos below and you can view the full album on my Facebook Page.
Last night, I invited my girl Angelica from Clarendon Moms to be my +1 for my FAVORITE event of the year -- the AT&T Best of Washington Party at the National Building Museum. We hopped a ride via Reston Limo so that we could thoroughly enjoy ourselves in the VIP area of the party. Each year, the event raises money for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society -- and I'm pretty sure that they announced last night that this year, they raised more than $1 million dollars!
Excited to announce that I've partnered with Quicken Loans National and Tiger Woods Foundation as the co-sponsor for my June event! They will be bringing tons of giveaways and swag. The tournament is July 27-Aug 2 at Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in Gainesville. Check out the volunteer opportunities on the #QLNational site.

Earlier this week, I popped into Athleta Tysons to grab some yoga outfits and tennis gear for summer. I met with Christina, the store manager, and went to town in the dressing room trying everything on. Athleta has a pretty neat service on their website that allows you to reserve items prior to arriving in-store... so when you show up, everything that you've selected is already for you in your fitting room! Saves SO much time and perfect for shopping with kids in tow!
I have to admit that I had no idea Athleta also sold casual wear for post-workout -- and I even picked up that cute pink dress that I wore to the Whole Foods Market Ashburn VIP party.
This Sunday, you can join Athleta and East Meets West in celebration of the first official day of summer. East Meets West will guide you through your morning practice to welcome and honor the change in season while simultaneously strengthening your physical, emotional and spiritual health.

Meadowlark Botanical Garden, 9750 Meadowlark Gardens Court, Vienna VA 22182

In 2011 by Kathleen Blaney, MSN, ARNP-C, started Simply Nonotoxic Cosmetics. “I don't think there's been a time in my life where I wasn't in school or running and managing a business. I am a firm believer that every step you take lead you where you're supposed be and after many years I feel like I have finally found my true passion. Developing a completely e-commerce business seemed to be the best avenue to reach the most people. Given the world of technology today, it just seemed logical to me.”
Kathleen started Simply Nontoxic Cosmetics as a solution her own medical issues. “As a nurse practitioner, that's what we do - resolve problems and find solutions to make people better. I had extremely sensitive skin and rosacea. Anything that I put on my skin, thinking it was helping, actually made it worse. I turned to the natural and organic Industry for answers. I combed the aisles of health food stores only to be frustrated. I even went to big name companies looking for answers only to be frustrated again. It finally dawned on me, after many hours of research, that I can do this myself! I can bring to market luxurious calling natural organic and toxin free products that people will love to use. And that's where it all began.”
“When an order comes in, even today, I smile. It gives me strength to move forward and continue on my mission. Often times I reach out to the customers personally. I believe in customer service and top quality products. I want to know what my consumers think and their feedback, because this business is evolutionary it's always changing – and it’s up to me to be on top of those changes for my customers.”
Describe yourself in three words:
Ambitious, tenacious, and creative.
What do you consider your greatest professional achievement?
My greatest professional achievement would be starting this business. Because it's my passion. I’ve started other businesses previously, but nothing that made me feel as strongly and as passionate as this business. Life is ever changing, there can be other things that happen in my life, professionally, but this is where I am most satisfied right now.
What are your professional goals for the next six months?
E-commerce for our site will be showing growth. In six months, I’d like to see this business thrive to the point where I'm overwhelmed -- not just just selling products, but hearing from the people to use them!
How does your company stay connected through social media?
Being an e-commerce business, it is imperative that we stay connected through social media. We can be found on Facebook , Twitter, Pinterest, and Google +.
What profession other than yours would you like to attempt?
At this point in my life, the growth and success in this business is the only thing I can think about. I have had many businesses in the past. The only thing I can see myself doing is becoming more educated about the natural organic and nontoxic industry as well as the technology that we're using in this ever-changing world.
How do you maintain a work/life balance?
Maintaining a work/life balance? Well this is a tough one. Though I not only believe in these products, I live the lifestyle. I make time for my personal life. I actually pencil in my personal time on my calendar. If I don't set time aside for myself, it will never happen. Like I said before, when you own a business, you live, eat, and breathe that business 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.
What websites do you visit every day?
I follow my social media accounts very closely. I visit my website and work on the backend for a while. I'll take a look at other competitors websites, I like to keep an eye on what's going on in my industry.
What is your favorite adult drink?
I drink water most of the time or I’ll whip up a smoothie, that's usually my daily breakfast. And occasionally, if I'm going to drink alcohol, it's red wine. Good red wine!
What are your top 3 favorite people/places?
The three top favorite people in my life are: my mother, she will always be number one, as well as my family. Lisa Brasfield, my business partner, has such a lust for life it is contagious. My best friend Phil has been with me through all the ups and downs the last 25 years.
One of my favorite places I have ever visited is Alaska. I’ve traveled all over the world for the most part, but there's something about Alaska that is breathtaking.
What is your goal for retirement?
I’m not ready to think about retiring yet! My main goal in this life is to make change. If retirement comes along with it, then so be it.
Do you have any advice for women who would like to start their own company?
First and foremost, find a mentor. It's not east to start and maintain your own company, especially if you've never done it before.
Follow your passion, and do not let anyone, not one single person, tell you otherwise. You might have to do something that you don't want to do to reach your ultimate goal. That's just temporary keep thinking that, stay positive no matter what life throws at you.
Don't give up. You will have failures, you will do things wrong, people take advantage of you -- it's the way in the world. Work with and surround yourself with good people from the start, otherwise you'll find yourself stumbling again and again and again.

Last year, we bought tennis rackets at Dick's and an oversized box of balls at Costco. We decided we were going to start playing tennis, casually, just for some sun and exercise. Little did I know how competitive I'd be - and how much fun we'd have playing with the neighbors and our kids on the court.
To amp up my game, I searched for tennis lessons in DC and found an awesome web site called Play Your Court - where you can arrange lessons with a tennis pro online and they'll come right to your home court for instruction.
The site was easy to use, and when you go through the process of selecting your skill level, age, and goals, Play Your Court will show you your matches. You can see photos of the tennis professionals in your area, as well as their locations, experience, and hourly rates. Even better, there are customer reviews that you can read for your recommended professionals.
B and I had a lesson, in the hot hot heat, with Lancy. She was so lovely! Knowing that I had signed B up to be a part of the tennis lesson, she brought special kids balls and set him up with drills on his own court while she and I practiced right next to him.
I learned SO much in just one short hour. It's amazing how all of the little tips and pointers can really improve your overall game. I always felt confident in my forehand, but struggled with an appropriate follow through. I also FINALLY figured out how to make better contact on my two-handed backhand. At the end, with a quick flip of my fingers, I was more comfortable serving that I have ever been.
If you're looking for tennis lessons in DC, check out Play Your Court. I'm ready to sign up for my next lesson! My neighbors better watch out for my backhand! :)

They’ve done it again! It’s no surprise that the imaginative masterminds that are Disney*Pixar were able to pull off a movie about a child’s life changes with such creativity and emotion… of the personified type, of course.
Inside Out is a comical yet relatable movie that will delight and entertain children and adults alike. The life of a little girl named Riley is seen in the eyes of the little voices in her head – her emotions; Joy, Fear, Anger, Disgust and Sadness. They collaborate to create great days for Riley; with Joy doing most of the engineering. When the emotions don’t work together as they should, trouble ensues. Through their sad, frightening, enraging, and gross adventures and struggles, the emotions learn that each one plays just as important a role as the others.
Be prepared to let your emotions flow on Friday, June 19th! I may or may not have shed a tear or two between the laughter, but you’ll never know and I’ll never admit it.
Get there early so you don’t miss ‘Lava’, the new Pixar short about a lonely volcano that will tug at your heartstrings! And stay after the credits to see how other character minds work (you’re going to love the cat!).
