Last week, I had a chance to meet Dr. Charlie Coulter who just opened a new pediatric dental practice, Dentistry for Children of Northern Virginia, at Worldgate Centre on Oct. 1, 2014. If you've ever had to fight with your child or had anxiety over actually getting to the dentist - I am confident that Dr. Charlie's office can make your kids fall in love with going to the dentist.
The pediatric patients will be swept away with a harbors-around-the-world themed lobby area which has been hand painted by a husband and wife team out of Atlanta. The artwork is absolutely amazing! The front office is complete with arcade games, a hidden play area with a movie room, and a cruise ship play structure. Oh, and to make mom happy, there's a homework bar and a Keurig station! The movies continue back to the treatment rooms where each child has a personalized screen to continue watching. (The Lion King was playing while I was there!)
After receiving care, patients can visit the nail bar and get their fingers painted - or the boys can get temporary tattoos.
It shouldn't go without noting that his front office staff was super friendly and welcoming (Dr. Charlie said the best place to find employees is at a restaurant - when you find a good waiter with great people skills, hire him/her!). Liz, one of Dr. Charlie's assistants, said she absolutely loves kids and going into the elementary school classrooms to read to the kids and share how to care for your teeth. Naturally, I signed her up to come into my son's class!
By the end of the tour, I wished Dr. Charlie was my dentist!
Dr. Charlie, seen here with Dr. Weiss, who will start seeing patients in Herndon in the next few months.
During our chat, I discovered that Dr. Charlie recently relocated to the DC area to be closer to family after practicing dentistry in Atlanta for 9 years. Since I had the chance, I went ahead and asked Dr. Charlie some questions to get to know more about him outside of the practice:
Favorite drink and where can you find it?
Captain and coke -- and I actually love Seacrets in Ocean City, MD. (Who doesn't!?)
What is your favorite day trip - 100 miles or less from Northern Virginia?
I could spend all day in DC at the monuments and museums - or on the Potomac kayaking Great Falls... or a road trip to The Franklin Inn in Richmond.
When you're not working in the dental office, where could we find you?
Reading, golfing or telling jokes. It used to be me doing my best karaoke performance at Nevin's in Baltimore until they closed down! I also love to travel.
Best vacation you ever took?
Snorkeling in Guadalupe -- I swam with Great White sharks while in a steel cage!
