Short Spoiler Free Movie Review: Maleficent--First off, unlike most of my Short Spoiler Free Movie Reviews this one will truly be short. At least short-ish. I spent a good chunk of time during the first part of the movie wondering if all the characters were CGI or if it was only Angelina Jolie's cheek bones. Speaking of Angelina Jolie, she really carried the movie and excelled in providing depth and dimension to the role. I say that not as a red bloodied male that appreciated her finer acting abilities in Tomb Raider, but I think the movie would have been less enjoyable without her presence in the lead role.
Speaking of enjoyable, the movie was enjoyable and seeing it in 3D added to the experience (as did wearing complimentary pointy horned hats which were especially attractive and impressive. In fact the young lady that the author was with, really appreciated the author's willingness to wear said headwear almost all the way back to the Silver Spring Metro Station. She's quite a trooper.) I probably would've enjoyed the movie more had I been in the movie's target audience and/or if I had double X chromosomes. I mean that in a good way, though as the movie had a pronounced message of female empowerment.
Now, was this movie appropriate for children? Good question. I didn't think it was too scary but I'm about 25 years older than most kids. I think the various movie trailers did the movie a bit of a disservice as they made the movie out to be scarier than it actually was. If you take those scary bits and stretch them out over 90 minutes, it really wasn't that bad. I'd probably take my kids to go see it, but I don't have kids. In conclusion, I definitely appreciated the new spin on an old tale and was pleasantly surprised by the way the movie ended.
