As Valentine's Day just passed, let me take a minute to brag about my husband. I'm extremely blessed, lucky, and spoiled to be married to my husband. And the fact that he's a chiropractor is a huge perk! When I have a stressful day at work or a long day with the kids...and a pounding headache, it’s so convenient to married to a chiropractor! A simple spinal adjustment helps me get aligned, relieve my pain and salvage my day.
My husband has always been an entrepreneur at heart. He takes so much pride in his clinic and patients' care as a small business owner. He always knew he wanted to start his own clinic. He was initially deterred when he worked at standard insurance based chiropractic clinics. He saw the rising costs of copays for his patients and care based on insurance coverage. He was refreshed to discover The Joint Chiropractic’s model that makes routine chiropractic care affordable and accessible for everyone. The Joint offers affordable memberships without insurance hassles.
The Joint Chiropractic may not be as convenient as being married to a chiropractor, but it is a close second. The Joint Chiropractic has over 350 locations nationwide and 6 locations in Northern Virginia. They are all staffed by licensed Doctors of Chiropractic. You don't need an appointment, just walk in when it's convenient for you.
Do you know what I love? When I'm traveling or away from my husband I can be seen at any of the 350+ locations. After an eight-hour car ride by myself with toddlers in a backseat, I can stop in at The Joint to get tuned up. Seriously, and they have all my exam notes. I just swipe my key tag, my info pops up on their computer and I walk to the back to get my adjustment. See what I mean, a close second!

Our Love Rising came to be after what Shelly calls "the series of unfortunate events." She's always had an entrepreneurial spirit. She previously owned two businesses in the special events field, businesses that connected people, fed people and were emotionally evocative. "Now I write and I speak about connection and living & leading from the heart and I facilitate mind, body, spirit events and retreats for people who are ready for change or desire a richer experience of life." Shelly is motivated by human connection and emotion. "I get a buzz from people whether its having coffee with a client, telling stories on a stage or in an intimate circle on a retreat in a far away place or creating a big event like LoveFest to gather people together for a heart opening, soul touching, mojo rising experience. I love making people feel taken care of, loved, special." Shelly is hosting her next retreat at Fairfax Country Club on February 11, 2017. To RSVP for this event, please visit: www.facebook.com/ourloverising/events
Describe yourself in three words:
Passionate. Present. Persevering
What do you consider your greatest professional achievement?
I feel like my greatest professional achievement happens when someone tells me that my stories, my videos, my retreats moved them, changed them, shifted a belief in themselves, helped solve a suffering I work with families with addiction a lot inside and outside of my work. They are a silent mass. When I touch something or help something heal there, I feel I’ve done my part to serve a greater good.
What are your professional goals for the next six months?
My dream for the next six months:
1. To take 14 women on retreat in Mexico.
2. To be invited to speak at big events.
3. To hold heart opening weekend retreats locally.
4. To keep the Our Love Rising Journal flowing.
How does your company stay connected through social media?
What profession other than yours would you like to attempt?
Rockstar. It might be too late for that though and I'd need a voice coach. I’d love to connect with a crowd that way.
How do you maintain a work/life balance?
Presence and Practices. I try to give my full attention to the moment I am in. I have practices that create & help maintain connection and calm. I take time every morning to connect with myself and my spirituality. That helps me from getting in overwhelm. I don’t believe in multi tasking so I am present for people and my work. I do yoga and Pilates regularly. I listen to my body. I eat really well, I rest when I need it, I drink a lot of water. I connect with my inner guidance through nature and meditation. Lastly, I have boundaries around work and screen time. I don’t get on my screens until after my kids go to school in the morning and shut them down when they come home from school for a few hours or for the night so that I am present.
What websites do you visit every day?
My own. www.ourloverising.com.
Facebook, Instagram, Medium.
I check out Undeniable Boutique on Facebook to see if there is something that strikes my fancy.
What are your favorite people/places/things in Northern Virginia?
I adore coffee/tea/lunch/cupcakes with people, especially my kids, connecting with nature and live music, dancing and shows.
I also love yoga dates with friends. Yoga at WheelhouseMIndBody Studio or Pilates at Studio BE Pilates Cupcakes & coffee/tea at Cupcaked in Clifton.
Burke Lake when I need to officially disconnect.
True Food at Mosaic. Wolftrap for fun music, dancing and shows.
What is your goal for retirement?
I figure I have a long time to do some really good work in the world before that day comes. I guess when I retire I hope I can just dance and be silly with the people I love.
Do you have any advice for women who would like to start their own company?
Just do it.
Even when it feels hard. Even when people tell you not to or tell you it will be too hard. Even when its exhausting. Find the thing you love about it and do it for that. Delegate out the tasks that you hate or aren’t all that good at. Get to know your inner guide really well and you’ll always honor your true calls and be able to handle anything that rises up. Take really good care of yourself first, then take care of everything else. The healthier you are, the better able you are to represent your company, your work and yourself. Value yourself. Be Brave. Be Committed. Be Devoted. Allow for your missteps and your failures and keep course correcting. The path won’t always be clear, that’s when you take time to get really still and listen to your heart and your gut.
Shelly's last thought: "Share your stories. Stories work like medicine, are inspiration for others, and connect us to each other. Thank you for the opportunity to share my story and offer wisdom gained on the journey to others who are considering entrepreneurship. I believe extreme faith is the secret to a successful, happy life and only you get to define what “successful and happy” feel like."

On Thursday, I joined forces with Chevrolet for an amazing opportunity to give back to our community right here in DC. My friend, Jennifer, and I took a trip downtown to meet the Chevy team at the Capital Area Food Bank -- a great non-profit that is always in need of donations, not only during the holiday season, but year-round.
We spent the morning in Costco and did some serious spending. On our list of items needed was: canned and dry beans, peanut butter, canned veggies, whole grains, pasta, cereal, canned meats, and healthy snacks. If you've never taken a flatbed cart through the checkout line... it is quite the experience. We had SO MUCH GREAT STUFF!
We loaded up the 2017 Chevrolet Cruze Hatchback with all the goodies we bought and took them back to the food bank. I'll be honest, I thought the Cruze might be a little too small to fit $1,000 worth of groceries -- especially since I planned on going bulk size at Costco! But, I was impressed with the cargo space -- and the delivery was seamless! Special thanks to Chevrolet for providing the opportunity to give back!

Three thousand years ago, the greatest sailors in the world voyaged across the vast Pacific, discovering the many islands of Oceania. But then, for a millennium, their voyages stopped – and no one knows why.
From Walt Disney Animation Studios comes “Moana,” a sweeping, CG-animated feature film about an adventurous teenager who sails out on a daring mission to save her people. During her journey, Moana (voice of Auli‘i Cravalho) meets the once-mighty demigod Maui (voice of Dwayne Johnson), who guides her in her quest to become a master wayfinder. Together, they sail across the open ocean on an action-packed voyage, encountering enormous monsters and impossible odds, and along the way, Moana fulfills the ancient quest of her ancestors and discovers the one thing she’s always sought: her own identity. Directed by the renowned filmmaking team of Ron Clements and John Musker (“The Little Mermaid,” “Aladdin,” “The Princess & the Frog”) and produced by Osnat Shurer (“Lifted,” “One Man Band”), “Moana” sails into U.S. theaters on Nov. 23, 2016.
