Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey® Presents Built To Amaze! is in town from April 9-20 at the Patriot Center. Over the past few years, I've been lucky enough to check out the opening night shows and give away tickets for my readers. This year, I got a little bit more up close and personal with the elephants to learn more about them and how they travel while on tour. We took B and two of his friends and their families on the tour with with us as we walked through the tigers, horses, and elephant areas.
Some fun facts we learned:
- Ringling Bros works solely with Asian elephants.
- Elephants are carboholics! They LOVE bread and eat as many as 200 loaves each week. Their favorite treat is watermelon.
- The oldest elephant on tour is 57, while the youngest elephant is only 7.
- Elephants are very loyal and they are taught by "reward and repetition".
- Elephants are raised and retired at the Ringling Bros Center for Conservation in Florida.
I also got to get a glimpse of the "divas" (all elephants on tour are female - they naturally travel better together than males - Imagine that!) during the Elephant Spa Day. The elephants are bathed and manicured every day, so Ringling Bros teamed up with Red Door Spa for an event hosted by Fox 5's Laura Evans. During the event, and in support of women from the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS), Red Door Spa provided a suite of mini services including nail polish changes, neck and shoulder massages, oxygen facials, makeup refreshers, hair style consultations and touch ups.
Before the opening night show, we finished up with a backstage tour of "how everything comes together". It was pretty cool to walk through the animals - but also to see the gymnasts that were working out in their private weight lifting area, there was a cafe car where the crew favorite is the chicken quesadillas, and then through the tunnels and onto the main floor before the show started. Of course, the show was wonderful.
