Did you know today is National Simplicity Day?
National Simplicity Day is observed on July 12th in honor of Henry David Thoreau. Thoreau was an author, naturalist, philosopher and an advocate for living a simple life.

To help you celebrate here is a list of 15 ways to live a more simple life!
Cut the Cable
How often do you really watch those cable channels anyway? Households spend an average of $100 a month on cable, while watching under 50% of those channels you are paying for, maybe less. In this century there are so many capabilities to stream the same shows for cheaper. Save that $100 and treat yourself to a nice dinner once a month instead.
De-clutter Your Home
Clutter is a killer! A cluttered home leads to a cluttered mind. Are you a household of one with place settings for 20? Get rid of some of those mismatched dishes from college. Have a family of 4? Get yourself a matching set for 8 and teach your kids to rinse and stack as soon as they are finished eating.
Give Yourself that Quiet Time
Quiet time. It's so hard to come by for many moms. Set your alarm 15 minutes earlier, get up and have that coffee or tea in peace. You will be surprised what a tiny bit of peace and quiet first thing in the morning can do for your day.
Let Go for 21 Days
Did you know it takes 21 days to make or break a habit? If you are trying to cut something out of your life but aren't sure you can.. try to go without for 21 days. 3 weeks. If you can go that long without it, you can get rid of it for good.
This works for habits and for 'stuff' cluttering up your house. Haven't touched it in 3 weeks? Donate it. Throw it out. Get rid of it.
Evaluate Your Commitments
Are you committed to something that you hate going to? Take a look at your monthly commitments, if it isn't bringing you value to your life then maybe you should let it go. Committing to too many things in a month ads stress to your life and that is NOT a way to live a simple life.
Say ‘No’ So you can say ‘Yes’
Do you find yourself often dreading going to events you said Yes to? From now on stop and think before you say yes. Does what you are being asked to do sound fun to you? Does is sound like it will bring value to your life? If you answer no to either of those than say NO, so you can say Yes to something you truly want to spend your time doing.
Limit Social Media Time
Social Media is an easy thing to get hooked on. 'Oh ill just check my notifications' Yet, 2 hours later you are still scrolling through Facebook or Pinterest. LIMIT YOUR TIME. Watch how long you are staring at your social media sites. Put the phone down and go for a walk, get some fresh air!
EMAILS! I know I am not the only one who gets anxiety when I check my email and see 50 unread messages. EVERY. SINGLE. DAY. The worst part? I delete 75% of them without even having to read it. UNSUBSCRIBE! Take 1 hour every month and go through your emails, scroll to the bottom of those ones you delete and hit that heavenly little Unsubscribe button at the bottom. Next time you open your email you wont feel so overwhelmed.
What is sweep cleaning? Every night before you go to bed do a quick 10 minute sweep of the house. Put those dishes from the counter in the sink. Throw away the trash. Put your shoes in the closet!. When you wake up the next morning you will automatically be more relaxed not seeing that clutter around the house.
Pay Bills ONCE a week
Don't let your "to pay" pile get too big. Try and set aside an hour a week specifically for paying your bills. Knowing your bills are paid up to date will take a huge stress off of your shoulders ( especially if you want to buy those gorgeous heels that are on sale)
Every other month purge 50 items. Clothes, baskets, frames you've had for 3 years and never filled. If you haven't touched it, worn it, used it since your last purge then its time for it to go. If you have kids, do the same for them and get rid of those clothes and toys they have outgrown or haven't touched in two months. ( they wont miss them and neither will you )
10 to You
BREATHE! Seriously, if you are feeling overwhelmed or stressed or having a hectic hour take 10 to you. Step outside. Hide in a bathroom. Take 10 minutes and just clothes your eyes and take a deep breath.
Organization is key to helping live a more simple life. If your home, car, and schedule is chaotic..so is your life. Get a planner, organize that pile of files in your office, clean out your car once a week.
Get Old School
Gettin' old school...with alarms. So many of us use our phones for our alarms. Stop. DON'T do It. Did you know your stress level can go down just by simply waiting an hour after you wake up before picking up a phone or computer. Same with giving them up an hour before you fall asleep. If you are using your phone as your alarm you are more tempted to sign in to those social media accounts and emails before you take a few minutes of peace and quiet to yourself.
This one should be self explanatory but just in case. BE PRESENT. Focus on the task at hand and nothing else. If you are at a family function, put the phone down and pay attention to Aunt Beth and Uncle Bob, even if they drive you nuts. Life is such a fast paced event these days that sometimes we forget to slow down, unplug, and be present in the lives of our family and friends.
