A few months ago I asked what that word meant to you.
Some answered via comment. Some by pm.
Some were moms and some weren’t.
It’s not meant to be an ugly word. Yet it is isn’t it?
When I asked what it meant hardly anyone said “the time period after having a baby” which by the way is almost the exact definition. Instead I got answers like:
Is that really the answers we want moms to think of when they think about bringing their baby home? I know it’s not what I want for my friends.
Postpartum is a time period. It shouldn’t be met with this stigma of negative thoughts and tears...but it is.
Why? In my opinion it’s because we as new moms are afraid to talk about it.
We’re afraid to say that we need help or need a nap or that we are overwhelmed for fear someone thinks we can’t do it or are mentally unstable or have depression. You know what though?
We SHOULD be able to talk about it. We should be able to talk about the bad and IF we do have depression we shouldn’t be scared to tell someone because new moms shouldn’t have to do it alone. Our country rushes moms back to work so quickly.
Why is it that as a new mom who just had an emergency C - Section I felt obligated to be back to work within six weeks and to work from home before that.
For fear of losing my job
For fear of not being able to provide for my family
For fear of not pulling my weight.
We should never have to feel that way. One day I hope that when I ask a collective group what comes to mind when they hear the word postpartum that I get answers like:
Time with my new baby
Because THOSE words. THOSE thoughts and feelings are what we should be feeling as new moms. Not worrying about rushing back to work. Not being scared to admit we need help. Not being scared that losing chunks of hair will make us less desirable. Not feeling like our stretch marks and surgery scars are something to be ashamed of.
We are warriors
We are moms
We are powerful
We should get to feel that way.
