Jay and I visited Strangeway’s Brewing this past Saturday and had the pleasure of meeting with Erin, the events coordinator at the brewery. We have visited here a couple of times before and always look forward to their uniquely named brews that are simply delicious(and sometimes a little strange) ;) Each time we have visited, we have always felt welcomed and this day was no exception. I like to think of Strangeway’s as an all-inclusive and accommodating brewery….a place where there is something for everyone.
Strangeway’s was one of the first breweries to open along with Hardywood, Legend and Richbrau(now closed). The inspiration for Neil Burton(the owner) to open came from when he was studying International Business in Austria and Germany, and found a love for beer. From this life changing event, he knew on day he wanted to open a brewery in Virginia. Being a big fan of the band, The Smiths, the name of the brewery was inspired by their album “Strangeways, Here We Come”, naturally. ;) And so it was, May 29, 2013, that Strangeways officially opened.
While we were there, Erin took us on a tour of the building, showing us both rooms for tastings and private events and the area where their beers are made! The outside parking lot has picnic tables and an area for corn hole, perfect for warm outside weather. Inside the front room there are more tables, a large area with a quirky bar, and some of the most unique art I have ever come across. I love the wide open space they have, and the back room is even bigger. The back room has another bar, a large area for seating, and it also serves as the area where private events are held and of course, the place where the brew-making happens!
The atmosphere was very relaxed, casual and comfortable. They have such an eclectic, almost peculiar vibe, and they pride themselves in that. They also strive to stay locally oriented as much as possible. They host events including trivia and burlesque nights, but also have family-inclusive aspects such as complimentary juice boxes, goldfish, & coloring pages for children, and their outdoor seating is dog-friendly as well. In addition, they offer food trucks Friday-Sunday, have corn hole out front, arcade games in the back, and offer light snacks to satiate your hunger if the food trucks are not present. You are even able to bring your own food if you would like, and they have a jukebox! I think I could spend an entire day there! :)
Currently, Strangeway’s is the largest provider of sour beer in Virginia and they usually have 36+ beers on tap, all ranging from IPAs, sours, ales, porters, stouts, and NOW serving local Virginia ciders! They are actually the first brewery tasting room to serve cider! And to think, Strangeway’s began its venture with only two flagship beers, both which remain on tap today, Albino Monkey Belgian White Ale(one of my favorites) and Woodbooger Belgian Brown Ale(one of Jay’s favorites). They release new beers each month and often times collaborate with local businesses for new releases. My favorite beer at the moment is the Sugar Shack Samoa Porter which released in late March.
I can’t say enough great things about their beer. They really do have something for everyone…whether you like sweet, tart, rich, creamy, sour, malty, light…the list goes on! I love reading the names of the beer. I know that sounds strange, but if you are into craft beer, you know you can always count on the creative names that Strangeways comes up with. Take “Lucky Charms” for instance….this particular beer received its name because it is on the sweeter side, and when tasted it has been said to bring you back to one of your favorite cereals from childhood. They have such a wide range of beers and are constantly creating more! They have won awards multiple years for the “Best Brewery Tasting Room in Virginia” according to RateBeer.com, and their Überlin Berliner Weisse Sour, took a gold medal in the Sour European Ale category at the 2016 Virginia Craft Brewers Cup Awards.
One thing I really love about Strangeway’s was their “can on demand.” They are actually the first breweries in Virginia to offer anything like this! The Can•able, also known as a crowler, is exactly what it sounds like. It can be filled at the brewery with any of their fresh draft beers, and stays good for up to 60 days. I love this concept because they are perfect for a beach day or any place that does no allow glass. AND on your birthday, you can fill up 32 ounce beer stein for a special price of only $5, so I know where I will heading in September! ;)
What made our experience so pleasurable was the friendly staff and attentive service. The staff is knowledgeable with all of the beers, and are always willing to find something that you will enjoy. They have such a variety of unique flavors…from sweet to tart and from hoppy to rich and malty, so it can be a bit overwhelming at first, especially if you are new to the beer world. But the staff are very prompt and happy to assist, making it easy in the long run to find that perfect beer. The music is great too, and the lively conversation makes this place alive and thriving with good vibes.
Strangeways also hosts events in which they are quite flexible when it comes to hosting. They can hold up to about 75 people with tables and seating, and you are even able to bring in your own live music if you so desire. The space lends itself so well to work with many groups and organizations, and they hold monthly fundraisers to help out with community(always a plus in my book!)
In September, they announced that they ill be opening a second production brewery and taproom in Fredericksburg this summer. It is a 10,100 square foot building on almost 3 acres and will feature a 10-barrel brewhouse, a taproom, live event space, a private event space, retail shop, arcade, and outdoor beer garden. I definitely foresee a trip up to Fredericksburg in our future!
We had such a great time learning about Strangeways, and enjoying some really unique beers, and we are SO excited to be hosting our event this month there! So be sure to get your eventbrite tickets here!
