As 2019 rolled in, I was in a deep and peaceful sleep. It's apparent based on the number of drunken texts and FB posts that some took ringing in the New Year to iconic levels!! Kudos to you!!
This morning with coffee in hand I find myself staring at this and wanting to fill it with such noble entries as promote world peace, save the children, save an animal, etc. (You know how it goes) One of my hard 2019 resolutions though is to read more. I recently attended a talk by James Clear, author of Atomic Habits. It's a New York Times Best Seller. He offers a way to build good habits and break the bad by making slight changes, minimal if you will, and celebrating the victory of achievement with each. One example was if your long term goal is to go to the gym everyday set a goal of going for 5 minutes at first. (Stay with me on this.) If you set your mind to going for 5 minutes 4 times a week and you succeed, you will want to increase that. You'll be building momentum on the feeling of success as opposed to telling yourself that your going to go to the gym 5 days a week and work out for 2 hrs a day and on day number two you're so sore you can't move and therefore don't go back at all. What will inspire and convince you to return? If you've been riding the couch, have Dominos on speed dial and your jeans are magically shrinking by the day....chances are good that a workout like that might just kill you! (in all seriousness though, it's not likely that you'll want to go back)
I'm going to be taking the baby steps this year. So instead of saving an elephant herd in Africa, I'll be feeding a stray neighborhood cat. Instead of saving a village, I'll offer a stressed out mom an afternoon of free babysitting so that she can reconnect with her inner goddess or just get a long overdue nap.
So Happy New Year to us all and set yourself up for success!! Join us for our New Year, New You, Girls Night Out Networking Social on the 24th of January. We will be at Cancun Margarita at the Spotsylvania Towne Center beginning at 6:30 p.m.
Visit James Clear's website JamesClear.com and you can find him on IG @james_clear.
For the past several years, I've had the great pleasure of participating in an Annual Pajama Party for Final Salute hosted by The Blackmon family. Final Salute is an organization founded by Jas Boothe to help homeless women veterans and their families. At Christmas time, the Blackmon family "adopts" several families from Final Salute and with the aid of their family, friends and contacts, help these veterans have a better holiday. They ask for lists from the families of what they would like to have and what they need and then as a group, their guests and contacts work to fulfill the list. This year there were NINE families adopted from Final Salute and the guests poured in with gifts, gift cards and money for them. It's probably one of the most touching sights I've ever seen. Rows of bicycles, stacks of toys and clothes...it's heartwarming.
The Blackmon Family (Roland, Liz and Dehrian) host this amazing party and open their home as a collection site. Once the guests go home and all is quiet, they begin the process of delivering all of the gifts. This process takes a couple of days by itself. It's a huge job and one that is done out of love.
Liz and Roland are both veterans and stay engaged to help their fellow vets. If you'd like more information on Final Salute, please visit https://www.finalsaluteinc.org/Home.html #finalsalute #womenveterans #stophomelessness
Christmas Eve Eve I dropped into Orangetheory to see what they were up to. It wasn't even 9 a.m. and here they were with smiles, sweaty clothes and amazing energy!! Who were these super beings so focused on their workout when there was so much to do for the holidays? Normal people that look like you and me, that's who.
Prior to meeting some of their amazing staff while attending a community event, I thought that it was a smoothie shop! They invited me to come over and check out the facility. Orangetheory offers a one-hr full body workout that is focused on endurance, strength, power and/or all three. It's a high intensity interval training that keeps calories burning up to 36 hrs post workout! (How many holiday cookies have you had??)
They are for everyone! As soon as you walk in the door, you're greeted warmly and made to feel so welcome. It's clean and has this very cool orange glow about it. The fitness coach was motivating without being overbearing and you could just feel the good vibes in there. They are very client and community focused too.
I visited the one in South Point in Fredericksburg, VA and there is also one in Stafford. Consider stopping in and saying hello this week (especially if your New Year's resolutions include working out and focusing on your health)! You can find them online at https://fredericksburg.orangetheoryfitness.com. You can also call them 540.300.6688 ahead of time and try them out for FREE!! #OTFFXBG #OTFFRED #OTFFREDERICKSBURG
At this time of year I don't know one single woman that doesn't have at least one special event lined up. We pour over what clothes to wear and then move on to hair and make-up. I made my trek into Bubble in Central Park last night for Megan to work her magic. I've been neglecting my roots and they were like a neon sign on top of my head. Megan is the manager over there and she and her evening crew work miracles. Come in frumpy and leave feeling nothing short of glamorous. I won't even get into the shampoo that you get there!! It's a gift from the heavens...ahhhmazing.
We were discussing the latest holiday hair trends and what and how people are finding their desired styles. It seems that across the board, Pintrest is where to go to find the pictures. This year the hair is trending with a bump and a small bun at the back or a fancy braid. While she was describing this to me, I wondered what I would pick should I need holiday hair so off to Pintrest I went. (This was a sure-fire way to loose an hour of time) There's so much to look at! This one was my favorite from the Pink Martini Collection on Pinterest. What's yours?
When you get ready to get it done, you can't go wrong to head over to Bubbles in Central Park, Fredericksburg, VA. @bubbles_salon_centralpark and have them "do" you. You can schedule throught their website also (they make it so easy!) https://locations.bubblessalons.com/va/fredericksburg/1460-central-park-blvd.html
Is your Christmas decorating already done? Mine is not. I have bags and boxes of items that need to be artfully arranged around the house. Why am I so hesitant to start? It's because I fear having too little or too much, looking like a department store or Santa's Wonderland. I pour over Southern Living, House Beautiful, Elle Decor and anything else that might give me some insight into the world of decorating. Thus far I have a random Santa Claus figurine in the front window.
I must and will conquer the holiday decorating though because in my infinite wisdom I have decided to host a Christmas Eve Open House. I have never done this before and will no doubt have nightmares until it is over! What will I serve? Do I have enough seating for everyone? Will they understand that they DO have to take their shoes off before walking on the carpet (it's white).
Will I have to call in the Big Guns? These are my tribe... women that can magically put together a party for fifty like it's dinner for four! Their houses look like magazine spreads all the while their spouses, kids and pets wander around comfortably. I know I must look like an audience member of a David Copperfield show when I visit. It's quite mesmerizing all of this domesticity with so much flare and elegance. I quietly ask myself if they were born with a special Martha Stewart gene, one that I missed out on.
Off to tackle the bag of decorations. Wish me luck!!
Just in case I'm not alone in this - elledecor.com, southernliving.com, housebeautiful.com They are great idea resources.
