Meet Joan Diaz-Mendez, Realtor with Coldwell Banker Elite. She's going to be joining us at our March Madness GNO and we couldn't be more excited!
When asked how she got into the business, here's what she shared: "Sink or Swim instincts after the market crashed and in the middle of a divorce. Oh, and let's not forget the 13 month old child who would be losing his home due to extenuating circumstances. That's the short version but you get the idea. My areas of expertise come from the financial and business experience I have had since 2006. Combining this experience with cutting edge technology, a positive attitude, integrity, and tenacity are just a few of the positive experiences my clients have enjoyed. My business experience has also taught me how to effectively negotiate and execute any deal professionally."
How does this busy lady keep work-life balance? Through yoga and events with friends. We also host many house parties with other family and friends.
What would she do if she didn't do this? Own a boutique hotel.
What advice would you give another? When creating your own business you should write your goals down, envision your goals and truly be honest with yourself in terms of commitment that you can put out towards it at the beginning. It's essential to not lose yourself in this process. A great example is Social Media, you should create a schedule for that every day.

Barbara Gustavson with Discover Next Step.
When my mom passed away I took a look at my life and realized I had not developed my potential and was often living from a place of fear. While I was working successfully in the corporate world, it was not meaningful work and I set out to find my own unique purpose and how I can make a better difference in the world.
In 2012 I joined the John Maxwell Team, an international organization of speakers, coachers and trainers. While I had no intention of becoming a speaker or coach, I decided to face my fears and develop my communication and speaking skills. I experienced so much personal growth I decided to become a certified speaker and coach.
What motivated me was getting clear on my purpose and mission, which is to help people discover their strengths, see their value, live more boldly and make a difference.
I decided to share more of my story and published a self-leadership book called Permission to be BOLD: A Guide to Loving Yourself, Living Fully and Leaving Your Mark on the World. It's now available on Amazon at https://www.amazon.com/dp/0997687223/ref=nav_timeline_asin?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1.
Some fun facts:
I consider myself to be a Purpose-Driven, Curious, Collaborator. If I wasn't doing this, what would I do? Neuroscientist (this would make my my 'inner geek' happy)
Get to know this awesome lady at our GNO tomorrow night! Want to contact her?
I don't know about you, but I have noticed that great customer service is getting harder to find. I have, to some degree, become numb to the lack of even the basics. It should never come as a surprise to us when we receive great customer service. It's a huge reason that I love the staff at Vinny's Italian Grill on Leavells Rd., Fredericksburg. They are fun and attentive to the needs of their customers. I'm excited about going back over there this week for our GNO! I can't wait to get in the swing of things on Thursday evening!!
Their menu is full of delicious options and the ambiance of the place is warm and friendly. They are huge supporters of the community and are just a pleasure to deal with.
Last night we went over to Fatty's Taphouse Seafood & Grill and I can tell you it was a total experience! Their menu (can be found on their website http://fattystaphouse.com) and they do not disappoint! Chef Jeff Newcomer will make your tastebuds dance. The service and attention to detail was great. It started with Dan (complete with dimples that are just adorable) sharing his recipes for the drinks that he's put together for our social. (Check our FB page for a complete list!)
Next we met Chris the owner. He came out to welcome us and pose for pictures, but as you can imagine, he's a busy guy. Chef Jeff came out to check on us and see how we were enjoying the Salmon Cilantro Tacos. I am no gourmet cook (that's all Wanda), but I love good food that has character. There were so many complimentary flavors that it made me want to slow down just to enjoy each and every one of them . It was a joy to speak with him because his passion for his work is so apparent. In addition to the main menu they have daily specials that offer yummy delights such as Blackened Shrimp Mac & Cheese. The food was delicious and very reasonably priced.
You know we couldn't leave without trying a dessert and it, like everything else, it was fabulous! We went with the Key Lime pie and thinking about it again while writing this is making my mouth water all over again. The perfect amount of sweet and tart,
They have an impressive wall of beers available for you to try. It's an amazing site! We were excited to find out that they are going to be opening a second location down around Cosner's Corner that will have a expanded menu, live music and of course the awesome selection of beers. I'm already working on another GNO with them on that end of town,
I look forward to seeing you all there Thursday and Fatty's staff is excited for us come! Please, be sure to check out their website http://fattystaphouse.com, find them on FB at Fatty's Taphouse Seafood Bar and Grille and on IG at https://www.instagram.com/explore/locations/1031669226979417/fattys-taphouse-seafood-bar-and-grille.
Hello Stephanie Turner! Stephanie will be joining us as a vendor for our Feb. event and she has a passion for cleaning without chemicals. She was first introduced to the products when Norwex was a gift given to her at a party and it has been an amazing journey ever since. She's been Norwexing for over 6 years helping families improve their lives by saving time, money and reducing the use harmful chemicals in their homes.
Three traits that describe her: Joyful (Indeed! Just look at that smile!!), thankful, loyal.
When she's not sharing Norwex with folks, she like to get her nails done at Angel Nails Spa, or enjoy Crab Rice at Nara Thai Cuisine, and Pledge Of Allegiance at Mission Barbecue Every. Day. at noon. If she wasn't selling Norwex what might she like to do? She'd like to be a professional singer!!
She's super excited to have Housewives in the City in her area and we are super excited to meet her!!
Meet Jackie Huber with Bellawood Photography. She's going to be handling the photography at our event this month!!!
We visited her at her studio and were blown away! This amazing artist has a serious passion for her craft. She has a Studio Art Degree from our very own Mary Washington, she's a marine corp veteran, wife and mom! She stays current with her skills by joining groups of other photographers from around the world. She's studying the techniques of Peter Hurley and she's a member of The Headshot Crew.
What does all of this mean to you? It means that she's constantly improving her skills and finding ways to provide the best headshots/photos for her clientele. She's got some very cool projects in the works and I personally can't wait to see the finished products! She does offer hair and makeup (when available) at the studio.

Claudia Mendoza with Aire Serve of Lorton is going to be with us for our Galentine's event. She's a busy mom of 4 that also runs this business with her husband. (Busy....we can relate huh?) She and her husband started their business in 2014 under a different name and then just last year merged in with Aire Serve. This busy, responsible, loving lady has goals! She wants to be able to grow Aire Serve to a point where they can have their own building and grow their staff.
With all of this how does she maintain a good work/life balance? Once she leaves work, her focus is on her family and she does not work on the weekend. Additionally, she's very involved with her church and serves as the Treasurer. She'd love to retire and just enjoy life with her husband once her children are grown. She has 4 children (2 girls and 2 boys) ranging in ages from 10-2.
Her advice to others considering opening a business is to leave it in God's hands. You will struggle, but give it to him. Claudia says "Even though as women we have more to do than men, we can do it. We are tough and able to achieve our goals!".
Be sure to visit Claudia and see what helpful information she has for us concerning HVAC. (especially since Spring/Summer are right around the corner!)
Alyse O'Steen and Sidney Bunce with HIGH Fit Stafford
These passionate, determined and very driven ladies will be vendors at our February Galentine's event. We are excited to have them and wanted to hear more about what their "why" was for starting their business. Here's what they had to say...
Building this business has not and is not easy; anytime we hit a wall or run into an issue, how we overcome that issue is a huge achievement. Between the two of us we have 6 kids under 8 years old and two husbands that work very long and hard hours, so being able to resolve issues with our business and keep it moving forward with everything else we have going on is huge for us.
So how did it all start?? We found HIGH as a free workout class at Ebenezer United Methodist Church. We attended the class regularly and fell in love with it. Once we learned our HIGH instructor would be moving and HIGH would no longer be offered here, we decided to get certified as HIGH instructors so we could keep the class going at Ebenezer. Sidney and I didn't actually know each other before we got certified. I got certified in New York in January 2018 and met Sidney before she got certified in Boston, MA in February 2018. We honed our skills and kept teaching with the instructor at Ebenezer until she left in May 2018. By June of 2018, Sidney and I felt confident enough to launch HIGH Fit Stafford. We wanted to share the HIGH love and introduce more people to this amazing new workout that truly made working out fun. Plus, the more classes we taught the more time we got to enjoy together doing something we love. We are mothers and wives first and foremost, but HIGH is our escape - it's our me time. It's definitely a balancing act trying to learn routines, book classes, practice, etc, and be mom, but we keep pushing and trying to build our business because it's our passion. A huge question we had was how do they maintain good work/life balance? Coffee! Prayer! It's definitely hard but both of us have strong faiths and trust in God's plan for us and our business together. We pray about our big decisions and we have honestly given our business to Him - He'll let it grow on His time. We do a lot together - share a babysitter, babysit for each other, practice our routines where the kids can play safely - so being around each other helps us keep communication open and clear and we help each other balance life and all it throws at us.
I'm looking forward to meeting these superwomen at the event and I'll be you are too!
We have the great pleasure to introduce Christina Hoy and her business Skin and Spa Boutique located at 1982 William Street in Fredericksburg. Find her online at www.skinandspaboutique.com. This remarkable lady has seriously made her dream happen! Could it be because she loves what she does? I think so!!
A bit about Christina and how she got started in this amazing journey. "I opened my own business 4 years ago. I was working for another large school/training facility where they taught adult education and trades. I learned so much and when I hit my peak I realized this is the highest I’d ever be with this company. There wasn’t any higher... I built a dedicated clientele over the past 6 years and thought it was time. Time to take my shot at this and see if I would sink or swim. My dad heard of a little office for rent and that’s where it all started. I wasn’t seen from the road but word of mouth spread. Don’t get me wrong the first two years there were some times that make you doubt everything you do. I even worked a part time job to help supplement, and to see if this was really for me. Through the process you learn to be more hungry, don’t take no for an answer, every hurtle is another step closer, everyday is another achievement to stay open. Through the last 4 years my business has doubled every year. I’m no where near where I want to be yet but I have come so far and am very proud. I lay down at night and know I did the best I could that day, and I’m content with that. I work every day usually 5-6 days a week, juggle three kids, this business and life in general. Again there are some hard times, and you have to be mentally strong and know this is my passion, I’m not doing this because I have to in doing it because I love to and that will keep you going. I have three daughters that are watching me and no matter what age they are, they are absorbing all of your examples, your hard work, your dedication and trust me in their eyes they want to be just like you. For me having my girls see this means the world."
She describes herself as strong, patient and passionate. (All necessary qualities to thrive in business) She's a goal setter and plans to market, build her clientele and plainly put...push it to the limit!! She says that she's able to maintain a good balance due to her amazing husband, yoga and retail therapy. She's got a plan. She's planning to retire at 55!
I am looking forward to learning more about her boutique at our February event! Find her there and see all the services she has to offer! www.spaandskinboutique.com Be sure to find her on FB at Spa and Skin Boutique.
In the Spring I always find myself looking for ways to brighten up my makeup and wardrobe. Do you do that also? We are so excited to say that Dawn Skaff with Mary Kay is going to be at our event on Thursday and able to help! Visit her table to learn of the new products and colors that are available for this Spring season. Here's what she has to share with us:
I began my business in 2014. I wanted an opportunity where I not only could work my business when I wanted to but I can earn money to have choices. Having my business gives me the opportunity to make people’s lives better, when a woman feels confident, she’s able to push past those thoughts that there’s no more growth in her life that the stars are the limit. I choose Mary Kay because it’s rewards courage and growth. I’m also part of a company whose values align with mine. Faith first, family second, career third. An average work will involve contacting party hostesses, conducting parties and then following-up with clients. It can be 4 to 5 hours a day depending on the activity and income that I desire to earn. I chose Mary Kay as an opportunity because women always want to feel and look beautiful, and to be confident.
My motivation is my parents they have always supported me and as they get older I want to do the as much for them as possible. I describe myself as committed to integrity. I advise women to be brave and don't doubt.
Dawn would like to be in leadership and also to be a motivational speaker. She maintains her busy schedule by using tools that help me to plan my week and the days within the week. Some of her favorite websites are Lifepoint Church, CNN and WTOP. In her spare time some of her favorite things to do are visit the local library and walk the trails along the Rappahannock River. Her life goal is to have the resources to help those in need.
She advises to women considering starting their own business to ensure that the business is something you are passionate about and that it meets a need. You must also the research to know what resources you will need and what those resources will cost.
See her Thursday! email@example.com www.marykay.com/dscaff
