Hi lovely friends! Meet this month's Leading Ladies; Sakshi Mehrotra and Aditi Anand of Meraki! We're so excited to have them at our September 18th event at Manuel's in the Arboretum and we're even more excited to share their Leading Ladies interview with you all!
Tell us about your business and how you became the successful business women you are today.
Both of us as individuals have always been excited about finding trendy designs to add as elements of fun and creativity in our homes and lifestyle. Also, our work together in a social enterprise where we worked in Indian villages, brought us closer to our communities and understand the need for backward and forward linkages for rural communities to thrive.
Hence, even though we were placed in different settings, we decided to pursue our passion. Empowering artisans across the world and bringing their custom handmade products to global markets became our North Star, our inspiration.
Describe yourselves in three words:
We’re both both bohemian in spirit, chic in style and contemporary in attitude. And we try to imbibe the same in our brand too.
What do you ladies consider your greatest professional achievement?
To go against the tide of our hectic schedules and day jobs, time differences, living in separate continents and still bringing this brand to life every single day. Also, getting such valuable feedback from everyone around us has been a great motivator.
What are your professional goals for the next six months?
Seeing our brand come to life has been like seeing a baby start taking its first steps. We’re just hoping now that people love it as much as we do!
We want to understand how we can optimize our operations from the bottom up, engage with our customers more and respresent artisans from across the globe to come on board.
As a brand, we also contribute a percentage of our sales to an NGO which provides clean drinking water in developing countries. We want to able to share the real impact through every purchase on our website.
What profession other than your own would you like to attempt?
We would really love to start our own jewellery line someday. Our Indian origins have equipped us with a strong ethnic yet contemporary design sensibility – and we’re hoping we can share it with the world soon.
How do you maintain a work/life balance?
We have a unique inter-continental advantage – we’re separated by half the world.
To many this can seem like a disadvantage but the way we see it, when one is sleeping or relaxing, the other is awake. Which means we both get to live our lives fully and the brand still runs 24/7.
What websites do you visit every day?
We try to visit websites from across the world to ensure that our designs are a good fusion of traditional and modern.
• Good Earth India
• White Moss Décor
• Ogaan India
What are your top three favorite people/places/things to do in your city?
Aditi – I’m addicted to yoga and dancing when I’m not buried inside a laptop.
Sakshi - My detox is spending time at a good bar and discovering good dinner places with my husband. We also love the rains and sometimes drive hours to chase storms. So much Fun !!
What is your goal for retirement?
Aditi - To have my own beach house where I can put my feet up, gaze into the sea and eat and breathe clean.
Sakshi – Beach house with the sound of water. Absolutely yes ! Along with a vegetable garden, couple of dogs and still doing something I love.
Do you have any advice for women who'd like to start their own company?
Take that leap of faith. That potential is in you so don’t be afraid to jump. No matter how big or small or imperfect your dream is, believe in yourself and surround yourself with positivity. Find supporters and stick by them because it’s so easy to get carried away by people who’ll say, ‘You can’t’.
Any final comments:
MERAKI means “doing something with soul, creativity or love” so in some way or another, we’re all part of the Meraki family :)
