Hi lovely friends! Meet this month's Leading Lady; Lindsey Kalb with Beautycounter! We're excited to have her at our August 23rd event at the Sonesta Rooftop in Bee Cave and we're even more excited to share her Leading Lady interview with you all!
Tell us about your business and how you became the successful business woman you are today.
Like many of you, I’m a wife and mom and want to do my best to provide and protect my family with safe, healthy choices. As I applied sunscreen, lotion, body wash and any number of products on myself and family, I never thought they might not be safe. I thought we lived in a country that regulates and protects us from everything on the shelf. So, I was quite shocked to learn that when it comes to the personal care and beauty industry, that’s not the case. The United States has not passed a federal law to regulate the ingredients used in personal care products since 1938. Even more troubling, chemicals linked to breast cancer, learning disabilities, infertility, and other health issues are allowed in the products we use every day. Our skin is our largest organ and everything that goes onto our skin enters the bloodstream within seconds.
I experienced a lumpectomy in my right breast at 17 years old. Luckily, it was benign but I was left scarred and confused as to why I was sitting in the Breast Cancer Center at only 17. Due to abnormal hormone growth, a fibroadenoma was removed. My risk of breast cancer is now 50% higher without any past family history.
I cannot unlearn what I have learned and feel a great sense of responsibility to share health and safety education with others. I want to be part of the solution and see change in this industry. I want to leave a legacy for my daughters and generations to come. I don’t want them to have to worry about the safety of ingredients used in our personal care products. Beautycounter has given me the opportunity to have my own business, support a people first mission, earn a fantastic income and be a voice for change. As our CEO and Founder, Gregg Renfrew, says, “we all deserve better.”
Describe yourself in three words: Loving, cheerful and loyal.
What do you consider your greatest professional achievement?
Last Christmas season, I helped lead our Austin Beautycounter community in giving back to local cancer patients through a "chemo kit" donation campaign. In one month, we donated over 75 safer product kits to Texas Oncology patients and the Breast Cancer Resource Center of Austin. The kits included Beautycounter's safer skincare products for those who have compromised health. Safer products are vital to fighting cancer and we wanted to do all we could to help. Clients and members jumped on the opportunity to donate and show their love to cancer patients all over Austin.
What are your professional goals for the next six months?
I want to be a stronger advocate for human health and safety in our community. My hope is to grow my team and our mission by adding more voices to our movement. That is how we will reach people every day with education and awareness of safer solutions. I'd also like to earn enough income to fully pay for my daughter's tuition next year and add another little Kalb to our family of 4!!
What profession other than your own would you like to attempt?
Children's book Illustrator!! I plan to take some drawing classes soon!
How do you maintain a work/life balance?
Lots of prayer! "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me."- Philippians 4:13. I make sure faith and family comes first (taking care of living things first). I time block my day to fit around parenting, household work and my business. I take care of clients and spend time communicating and reaching out to prospects during the day time and I plan, brainstorm and market my business at night. I have a lot of help from others too!!
What websites do you visit every day?
Beautycounter (duh), The Skimm, Facebook and Instagram.
What are your top three favorite people/places/things to do in your city?
Prep to Your Door (plant-based food delivery service), LOVE Cycling Studio, Atomic Warehouse, Juiceland (sorry that was 4 and I have so many more!)
What is your goal for retirement?
Probably never going to happen with my entrepreneurial spirit and shopping habit, but we’d love winters in Hawaii, summers in Colorado, enjoying family and friends, giving back and doing art with kids the rest of the time!
Do you have any advice for women who'd like to start their own company?
Yes, so much! I'll try to be wise but mostly I just take things day by day and pray it all works out! I have found that if you always put people first and focus on building relationships, you and your business will stand out. Fulfilling people's needs, listening more than talking (tough for me) and providing them with the best care and service will go a long way.
Be resilient, persistent and consistent. A lot of people will tell you no, or it may seem impossible but stay the course. Trust in yourself, find the next best opportunity and go for it.
Make a plan and work the plan every day. I write down 3 things I want to accomplish in a day and make it happen. Create big and small goals and set tactical objectives to accomplish them.
Comparison will be the thief of your joy, so stay true to your authentic self and keep doing what you can do best. Celebrate achievements, stay humble and grateful for your beautiful life and blessings. God is in control and has a plan for good for those that trust in Him.
Any final comments:
I like to tell people, we're more than just a beauty company, we're a movement and every purchase has a purpose. I don't just sell shampoo. We're the only company out there fighting to protect Americans in our very own industry. Human health and safety is our first priority and our products meet the highest standards on the market! Plus, they're gorgeous and work just as great as any high-end brand you can find! Choose safer for yourself and family and support a mission that's fighting for everyone.
