We are travel-loving people, through and through, so this stay-at-home and quarantine order is slowing killing my soul. We've accomplished just about all of the home projects I've wanted done, I've organized about everything we own, we've purged, packed away the fall and winter clothes. I'm running out of things to do to keep myself occupied, so we've vowed to go at least every other weekend on even a little day trip to explore somewhere new.
Today, our travels led us to the day trip of all day trips, as basic as they get, a Sunflower Field in McConnells, SC. At the Draper Wildlife Management Area, you will find huge fields of Sunflowers. Despite there being probably around 80-100 people there, you're able to keep your distance and if you get a little crafty, you'll catch gorgeous photos with no other people in the background.
Some sunflowers are starting to droop and it is HOT out there. I mean, real HOT, but I highly recommend jumping in the car tomorrow, or next weekend at the latest and heading just outside of Rock Hill to this beautiful site.
It's just about an hour outside of Charlotte and we elected to take the back roads down from Mount Holly which gave us some scenery of beautiful homes and pastures through the South Carolina countryside.
You'll want to enter the Hunting and Fishing area, follow the dirt road all the way to the end where it turns into a parking lot, and the trail to the sunflowers is on the left side of the parking lot as you head in. Grab your camera and a water, because I'm not joking, it is HOT, and head up the trail of no more than 1/4 mile to the fields. There are several fields, all within eye-sight, but if you want to be on your own, be prepared to walk just a little further past the corn fields for your private spot.
When you are finished with the sunflowers, take a right out of the entrance road and go just about a mile down to Historic Brattonsville where you will find gorgeous plantation homes. The site is currently closed, due to COVID, but so worth the drive by to see even the outside of these historic buildings.
This trip was truly a photographer's dream.
We all know, there's no place like home...unless you can find a Canopy Hotel. In the middle of a global pandemic, the team at Canopy Southpark has pulled off the opening of the most glorious hotel I've ever had the pleasure of visiting. From the welcoming entrance, to the curation of all local products, and the team of Enthusiasts prepared to make you feel right at home, Canopy Southpark was designed to be the most comfortable home away from home.
After dropping your car with the valet, enter the front doors to be greeted by Enthusiasts and begin the check-in process. Shop their retail wall with all local products from small businesses around the Charlotte region. Arrive early? No problem! Canopy offers a Transfer Room where you can relax, grab a shower, change into something comfy and I can assure you that your room will be sparkling clean and ready for you soon!
Hungry? The restaurant, Fine & Fettle, is an experience of its own. Executive Chef, Daniel Wheeler, is whipping up the most delicious food that will have you coming back time and time again. Fine & Fettle is currently serving breakfast, lunch and dinner. You can book your reservation to guarantee a table (due to COVID).
When your room is ready, head upstairs and enjoy luxuries that you won't find just anywhere. Outfitted with filtered water stations on each floor, refrigerators in every room, conveniently-placed charging stations, and Serta mattresses you won't find anywhere else, each room is an oasis.
If you have a longer stay ahead of you, you'll enjoy a variety of rooms and suites offering plenty of space and amenities that will have you forgetting you are even in a hotel room. Book a room with a balcony to take in the gorgeous Carolina air.
Possibly the most impressive feature of all is the Dyson hair dryers located in suites and balcony rooms! That's right, leave your hair dryer at home because you can actually rely on the hotel hairdryer for the first time!
Need to get around once you've checked in? The house car will take you within a 2-mile radius and is first-come, first served. Looking to explore all that Southpark has to offer? Canopy also has bicycles available. Simply sign out at the desk and head out for a ride.
Whether you're traveling for business, or pleasure, or local and in need of meeting space, Canopy Southpark is the best of the best. Every detail thoughtfully selected from local businesses, like the Pure Intentions coffee you'll find downstairs.
The event spaces...let's just say I see many meetings and events at the Canopy in my future. No matter what size space you are in need of, Canopy has a space that can accommodate your group. The indoor/outdoor feel of their largest space will have you planning your dream wedding from the moment you walk through the door.
All of these features have us wondering what it would cost to stay at this luxury, cozy hotel, but don't worry, Canopy is budget-friendly with the average stay being between $189-219 per night.
Their motto is "We've got you covered" and by the end of the first day, you'll know why.

Hi, ladies! I'm Katie and I'm your new Director of Marketing + Events for Charlotte Housewives. I can't wait to meet you all in person over the next few months, but wanted to introduce myself now. I've lived in the Charlotte area since the end of 2004. We've lived all over the area: Mooresville, Sherrills Ford, University, Uptown and now in Mount Holly just barely outside of Charlotte. I love this city and I never plan to leave.
I love to travel. App State Football is my #1. Luke Kuechly will always be my LB. Any super bowl without Tom Brady is a good one. I'm literally a professional student at this point, working on degrees 4 & 5 simultaneously. I will never turn down good ice cream. Benny Pennello's is the best pizza in CLT.
I'm not new to the Housewives in the City brand, and certainly not new to Charlotte. I've been running the Gaston County chapter of HITC for almost two years now. That's so crazy to think about! I fell in love with the community of women supporting women when I attended a Charlotte Housewives event at The Broken Spoke three years ago and the rest is history! There are so many things to love about Housewives in the City:
I love the community of women we build within our city. New friends, new business connections. It's truly something special. I've seen so many groups of women at our events and hearing them say that they met at a Housewives in the City event makes all of the hard work that goes into running one of these groups totally worth it! Our events aren't like all the others. You don't have to come just for professional connections. We cater to ALL women. Stay-at-home moms looking for friends, professional women looking to broaden their sphere of influence, retirees looking to get out of the house and have some fun. No matter who you are, you're welcome with us!
I love the way we support local businesses. We travel to different venues every month to give you the opportunity to experience new restaurants, hangouts and entertainment venues, to help bring awareness to the amazing venues we have right here in the Queen City. We also partner with new featured businesses every month, helping connect our audience with local businesses that offer the products and services you need, right here in our community. I'm big on SHOPPING SMALL and SHOPPING LOCAL. As a small business owner myself, I know how hard it can be to do it all on your own. That is why, with Charlotte Housewives, it's my mission to bring awareness to the amazing female-owned businesses we have here in Charlotte.
We're just a group of women, supporting other women, supporting our community and having fun doing it.
We're back! Charlotte Housewives is officially relaunching this Tuesday at The Broken Spoke! We hope you'll joins for friends, fun, food, drinks, shopping, swag and more! It's totally FREE admission and we've got the entire upper loft just for us. Register for free by clicking the button below. We can't wait to see you there!
"THERE ARE PEOPLE BEHIND THOSE NUMBERS"...when those words came out of Gayle King's mouth on CBS This Morning yesterday, they really hit home. As the family member of a deployed soldier, every headline hits home, but that one especially. You hear 3,000 troops being deployed, on 18 hours notice, but are you thinking about what they are rushing out the door and leaving behind? Families, pets, sometimes secondary careers. No matter where you stand when it comes to our political climate, please remember our troops and their families. Please remember that your support as they fight for our freedom is important. They don't make the decisions where or when, but they have to go. Sometimes without being able to tell their family where, sometimes without being able to even take a phone and sometimes without knowing when they'll be back. So please, support our troops every chance you get. With your heart, with your words. Every thought and every prayer matters.

Staycation: a vacation spent at home and involving day trips to local attractions.
I've decided for Mother's Day from this day forward, I want a hotel staycation. It's not that I don't love my children and husband but there is something relaxing about being alone to read, have a meal, sleep in the entire bed or even work in peace.
However, I cannot take the credit on this idea. My friend, Miranda in Charlotte, did the same staycation last summer. You can read her review here. Earlier this year she hosted a giveaway that included a boudoir session from the same photographer that she used and I entered. Funny thing is that I won. When I spoke with Lauren Villa with Lauren Villa Boudoir, she mentioned a handful of hotels we could use to keep it a secret. So I contacted the same hotel Miranda used because the post she made basically sold me.
So yeah, basically I copied my favorite local influencer because she - well - influenced me.
To start things off, I arrived later than planned because of tornado warnings and crazy winds. Pulling up to their valet made it easier. It’s only $6 extra per night so it’s not a massive splurge and the gentleman who assisted me both days was so nice at helping me with my heavy bags. The front desk quickly checked me in and sent me on my way up to the top to one of their Penthouse suites.
When I first walked in, the room took my breath away from the small details of the glass mirrored accent wall to the TWO balconies. The Dunhill Hotel was opened in 1929. The details are beautiful and full of history. Not to mention the marble flooring in my room are original to the hotel! Although they are continually remodeling, the goal is to keep the architecture true to the original design.
When I got in, I rummaged through some of the areas in the room and quickly found that my room had a handful of books about Charlotte and of course some super soft robes. After I glanced through a few, I decided to lay down for a bit on the fluffy king size bed before I headed down for dinner.
After a short nap, I headed down to have a small bite at The Asbury. I ordered a large glass of red wine and the NC Beef Blackboard. I know that I will never turn down a great piece of steak! I worked a little while I waited and really took in the solo dining - including the people watching. There were groups around me having a great Friday night out in such a relaxing spot that it amazed me how we were both enjoying very different Friday nights in the same spot while both enjoying the atmosphere.
I grabbed another glass before ascending upstairs for the night. I decided to take in the night on the patio facing uptown. It was the perfect weather outside so I changed in my pjs and listened to the music below.
This was my first night alone since Milie was born and I was ready for uninterrupted sleep! Although she sleeps through the night, I constantly wake when I think I hear her stirring around so I shut all the curtains, turned down the lights and let the fluffy pillow top King consume me.
I woke up ready for my photos with Lauren. I was so sad I couldn’t fully experience the grand rain shower because I had extensions put in the day before so I ran down and grabbed a shower cap! Still not the same but it worked.
We then spent the morning doing a fun boudoir shoot which I'll share more about at a later date. Because I gifted these for a partial wedding gift, I wasn’t able to share my staycation with y'all before I told him why I went to the Dunhill other than to have a night away!
This feature was written in conjunction with The Dunhill Hotel and Asbury. Opinions and experiences are my own. No monetary or personal gain was traded with Lauren Villa Boudoir outside of winning the session through another giveaway. All opinions are my own.
I'm Katie and I'm so excited to be the new director of the Charlotte region of Housewives in the City! I'm a resident of Mount Holly and currently run the Gaston Co Region. I absolutely love traveling, sports and I'm always up to learning something new. I cannot wait to meet all of you!
