Picture yourself in your home or during a weekend with no plans and nothing that HAS to get done. What do you do? Me…I pace in circles like a lost dog wondering why I don’t have anything to do. Seriously, my anxiety rears its ugly head. Meanwhile my husband might be watching a movie or relaxing and invites me to come join him. I try, like I really try, but my mind does not want to let me. ***Sink in guilty feelings*** Guilty? Why? I have always been a go go go person and when there is not something to do, I tend to feel like I forgot something or missed out on something. “I know there is something I should be doing right now” I tell myself. “There is no time to relax” I think in my mind. Well let me tell you WRONG!!!! REST is good for our souls, mind, and body!! Surprise-This is a practice that does not come easy to me. Staying busy for me is one way I cope with my anxiety and it is not always the best way to do that. It is healthier for me and for all of us to incorporate rest into our lives… whatever that looks like.
We need REST to restore, re-energize, heal, and re-connect. We are not missing out on anything. In fact, we become stronger, healthier, more attentive, and engaged individuals when we allow ourselves to rest.
I have embraced the idea of rest and bringing a greater sense of balance into my life. This may mean that I am turning down a social affair to sip hot tea, watch tv, and go to bed at 10pm on a Friday night. This may mean that I am MIA on the weekends to re-connect with my kids, my husband, and my family since our week is jam packed with who needs to be where and at what time. This may mean going to get my hair or nails done. It may look like waking up early on the weekends before anyone in my house to slowly sip on a cup of coffee in silence. It may look like baking something we don’t need in our house, but I am going to bake it anyways. It may look like taking a day off from working out and not achieving my daily “goals” on my Apple watch (which drives me crazy- anyone else?? but is also good for me to do once in a while). Gaining rest looks different for everyone and can look different everyday.
How do you achieve rest? How do you re-boot? What does REST mean to you?
