Few weeks into teaching my kids at home because schools are closed due to the pandemic. And I see many people are concerned about students falling behind because of the schools being closed. Yes, they may fall behind when it comes to classroom education or
...they might learn an easier “old school way” to solve a simple math problem... 🤷♀️
But seriously, what if...
instead of falling “behind", this group of kids are ADVANCED because of this? Hear me out.
What if they enjoy family connection, they can be more creative and entertain themselves, they love to read, they love to express themselves in writing, through art, dance and music.
What if they enjoy the simple things, like their own backyard, a bike ride and sitting near a window in the quiet.
What if they notice the birds, the mornjng dew, the flowers blooming, and the calming renewal of a gentle rain shower?
What if this generation are the ones to learn to cook, to organize their space, to decorate, to build, to do their laundry, and keep a well run home?
What if they learn to stretch a dollar and to live with less?
What if they learn to plan out shopping trips and eats most meals at home.
What if they learn the value of eating together as a family and finding the good to share in the small delights of the everyday?
What if they focus on their health, enjoy exercise and appreciate each breathe.
What if they are the ones to place great value on our previously invisible essential support workers like truck drivers, grocers, cashiers, custodians, logistics, and health care workers and their supporting staff, just to name a few of the millions taking care of us right now while we are sheltered in place?
What if among these children, great leaders emerge who had the benefit of a slower pace, surrounded by those that love them the most, loving a simpler daily life while also having the benefits and advances of technology at their fingertips?
What if they truly learn what really matters in this life?
What if they actually end up AHEAD?
I actually realized that my child doesn't get enough one on one time within the education process to help him fully understand the lessons. The school has been relying on computers too much to assist in teaching that they are missing some key things. For example, my daughter is in kindergarten and they type in their answers so much that the teacher must have not noticed the HUGE pattern of my daughter writing her 5's backwards. My son knows answers but times out of his tests because he isn't a fluent typer - maybe that's why his grades are sufferring but he comprhends all when we review it at home? I may have realized these things along with other things had this mandatory virtual schooling process not happened.
The entire process has not only given me more time with my kids it has given me the confidence to consider homeschooling as a viable option in the future because I know now that I can do it and that it may actually be better for my kids!
What is Housewives in the City (HITC)?
Fort Lauderdale Housewives is one of the newest branches of Housewives in the City and we want to get you connected with local events, small businesses, charities, and giveaways. We do all this through this website and monthly social meetups at local spots.
Who runs HITC?
I am Mandy and I am dedicated to build the Housewives in the City community in Fort Lauderdale like it is in so many other cities across the US! (I also manage the SWFL Housewives In The City community!)
About Me: Mandy Michelle Carter
Hey Y'all - My roots are in Tennessee, so I can be a little soft spoken and I have a true southern belle twang who despite my journalism career, frequently uses the contraction you all. I left my hometown 2 decades ago with some lofty goals for a young girl. What it got me was a BA in Communications and minor in Journalism from Mississippi State University in Starkville, MS (Go Bulldogs!), a 10 year marriage, a successful marketing career and two beautiful kids. Fast forward 2 years later ----> that marriage ended, and the career took too much time away from my kids. So I refocused on my dreams for me and my kids.
With the support of my friends and family, I threw away my comfort zone and decided to focus on growing myself and my dream of working for myself, having full control over my time. Which led me to the happy place I am now...working freelance fulltime as a Pro Blogger, Published Journalist and Social Influencer. Learn more about what I do at itsmandymichelle.com
I’m looking forward to sharing my life, travels and other local information with you. A little more about me: I am a writer, editor and birthed two charismatic kids, a silly boy and a sweet girl) + recently became an instantmom to one cute little girl (ages 5 , 7 and 8). I am obsessed with traveling, could eat tacos everyday, can sip wine or shoot whiskey, I love sunsets, can spend hours at the beach and if you need a buddy to go check out a new attraction, museum, restaurant or hotel-I'm your girl!
Building a support circle
One thing I found to be more difficult as I get older, is meeting new people. Sure, you can meet new people at work, your kids school events or possibly just out at the beach but to me it seems like it gets more challenging with each year, each life changing event and the increasing time spent online. But mostly it is challenging to meet ladies from all walks of life, which everyone’s different experiences is to me the interesting part of life! When the opportunity of bringing Housewives in the City to Fort Lauderdale came about, I figured this would be the PERFECT way to not only meet new women myself, but also help others that may want to get out and meet new people too! I have seen how amazing Girls Night Out events are in our other cities and I can’t wait to bring the same fun to all of you! And before you ask, let me say you do not need to be a “housewife” to be involved in what we do - look at me, I am breaking the stereotype of a typical housewife as I venture through life as a single, work from home mom.
With our monthly Girls Night Out Social Meetup Events we will strive to get you out of your house, meet some friends, network with other 'Girl Bosses' and rock this amazing city.
I hope that you continue to check here and on our social media pages to see what I’m up to and what fun you can join in on in the Fort Lauderdale area. The very first Girls Night Out launch event will be at Terra Mare at The Conrad! Watch Facebook for all the details. If you ever see me out and about, please come say hello – I can’t wait to meet you!
