Gaston County is becoming so much more than 'the place next to Charlotte'. We've had several exciting announcements this month! Here's what we want you to know:
A total of 35 new vacation cottages are coming to the Crowders Mountain State Park area, the Gazette announced just yesterday. Starting with 14 cottages in the first phase, the all brick-and-wood cottages will be 'tiny-home-sized', from 350-800 square feet.
Gaston County School and Belmont leaders broke ground on the new Belmont Middle School this week. The school is expected to open in 2021. Set to cost roughly $34 million, the school will be 155,000 square feet and serve 1,000 students to start.
1Mission Coffee Company is occupying what Stanley residents know as the Train Depot. The Coffee Shop supports missions in Haiti and gives 10% back to the Town of Stanley for revitalization efforts. We've visited and WE APPROVE!

I've posted before about how much I love EC products, so I thought it was even more important to share my honest review of the EC Seasonal Surprise Box. Boxes like this are always hit or miss, but I really expected more from Erin Condren. First of all, the box shipped way later than the advertisement that made me buy it said. When it did finally arrive, I expected to be overwhelmed with excitement about the goodies inside, but I was quite disappointed. The best thing in the box was a gorgeous, colorful umbrella, but that's not really why I ordered an Erin Condren box! I got a few rolls of washi tape and just a few other items, none of which am I likely to use and none of which I would feel comfortable including in a gift to someone. The point of these 'surprise' boxes is to get a good value of items at a heavily discounted price. I don't think that is what EC did here. I won't order another EC surprise box. I'd rather just wait on a coupon code and pick out my own items!
A friend recently purchased the Revlon One Step Hair Dryer and Volumizer and recommended I check it out. Little did I know at the time that this neat little device is a GAME-CHANGER! The only negative about this sweet device is that it is a bit bulky. I have some carpal tunnel in my wrists, so by the end they are a little tired, but I tell you it is WORTH IT. My hair is softer already! I've used this two days in a row and I'll be honest (as I always am with you), I do NOT do my hair regularly. 4/5 if not 5/5 days I was leaving the house with wet hair. The old days of scrunching with gel were the best because it was socially acceptable to have wet, hot-mess hair. It now takes me 10 minutes to fully dry and style my hair, all at once. I have very thick hair. I get it thinned when I get it cut because I shed so much and it is so heavy. So 10 minutes to dry and style my very thick, medium-length hair. The best $54 I've spent this year, hands down. Amazon seems to have the best deal, taking arrival time into account. You can also find this at Target and it is on-sale online, so if you have a red card and can use the sale, you can probably get a tiny bit better deal.
Happy Women's Day to all the rockstar ladies out there!
Celebrate yourselves today! You deserve it.
I read blogs or social media posts all the time about the moms who work and don't feel like they are doing it all right. Lately, I've been struggling. We don't have kids and yet somehow I can't keep up. I'm a terrible "housewife" and we don't even have children making a mess to use as a legitimate excuse. It's just the two of us, and yeah we make a mess.
Today for example: head to a morning meeting, get to work, have about 30 minutes then head out to run my meals on wheels volunteer route, pick up the first something to eat at 11:30, go back to work, eat at my desk, get a good amount of work done and feel fairly productive, 5:15 rolls around and I'm headed out the door, give Wesley a call to see what he wants to do for dinner. Dinner has been a challenge since his position is mobile and he could be anywhere in the Charlotte region at the end of the day. It almost always works out that he is somewhere in Matthews, Indian Trail, etc. way down 74 and has a ton of traffic between him and home. We're grateful for his job, so don't think I'm complaining, but planning anything in the evening is now very much a struggle. I go pick up dinner, get home, have to get his reheating so it is ready for him, get ready for a group chat for school, participate in said group chat from 7-8:30 pm, throw the laundry in because let's be honest, it is piling up everywhere at this point. Somehow I have to get the rest of my homework done. Believe me, I know that's on me. I didn't NEED this degree, but I wanted it. I function so much better when I'm in school, so I went back for this second Master's degree. I'm almost through or I feel like I might give up.
So, how do you do it? How do you juggle the laundry, the dishes, the kids, the boss, the coworkers, the rest of the family, the school work? HOW DO YOU MOMS DO IT?!
I frequently take on too much. I realized I don't have hobbies anymore. I like to work. So, I take on more and more and more and yet, I don't feel fulfilled. So what is missing? Would I feel better if I could manage the work-life balance? I love my friends and I feel so guilty when I forget to text them back. How do you not let work get in the way of life? It's part of it, right?
Work-Life balance was the number one topic of interest from survey respondents after the last Professional Women's Association lunch hosted by the Gaston Regional Chamber. I know I'm not alone. I just want you to know, neither are you.
I'm Katie and I'm so excited to be bringing Housewives in the City to Gaston County! I'm a resident of Mount Holly. I absolutely love traveling, sports and I'm always up to learning something new. I cannot wait to meet all of you!
