If you've been following me for the last month, you know that my boyfriend and I have been taking a social media marketing class at the library. It's been way more intense than I ever thought and we finish up next week. I've learned so much more than I thought I would, already being an avid social media user. The analytics that are available are just insane! While the class itself has been incredibly helpful, the library has been an amazing resource by itself. Libraries today are incredibly under-utilized, so if you haven't looked into the Gaston County Library or even the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Library to see what they have to offer, I highly suggest you do so. There are classes offered all the time, resources for businesses, computer rentals, workshops, children's programs, you name it.
I'm registered to take a photography workshop in June and the Librarian at Mountain Island helped me find a class to take to learn about graphic design. The best part - all three are FREE! Assuming we pass our social media class, we will receive a certificate from Boston University for FREE! This specific certificate was funded by the library and they don't pass on any cost to me. The strategic social media marketing certificate is positive for my resume, helpful in running our business and an asset in my blogging endeavors with HITC and it won't have cost me a dime! The graphic design class is from UC-Boulder and again - FREE! What I've learned is that you can take courses online, via the "audit version" and it won't cost you a penny! You won't get a degree and most of the time won't get a certificate, but you will learn something new, from home, completely online, for absolutely no cost. Want the certificate? Most of the courses I've seen offer a certified/verified version for $150-250. That's not terrible if you're looking for a part-time job and want a little bit of expertise!
So where do you find these classes? Well, I was skeptical of some, so I asked the Librarian! The course we are currently taking for social media is through edX. Graphic design I found via Coursera and I'm sure there are others out there. Now remember, NEVER put your credit card information in anywhere. If it asks for it, there is a chance at some point it won't be free. If you never put it in, you don't have to worry about missing fine print. Keep your eye out and if it says "free trial", shy away from that. You are welcome to get the certificates that are offered (I'm ALL about certificates, I'm kind of a nerd in that regard), but remember that most of the time you get the same or most of the same information in the audit version for free, so if it asks you if you want to upgrade or purchase the certificate, you CAN say no.
I'm Katie and I'm so excited to be bringing Housewives in the City to Gaston County! I'm a resident of Mount Holly. I absolutely love traveling, sports and I'm always up to learning something new. I cannot wait to meet all of you!
