Do you remember where you were, on September 11, 2001? If you don't I'd be surprised. I was nine, sitting in computer class. The office at my private school in New Jersey kept paging students to the office. They were all being checked out and taken home by their parents. There weren't many of us left when my dad came to get me too. We were so close to the city, and after the crash in Pennsylvania, we were worried we were next. I can't remember the timing but a plane flew over the house, low and loud. I'd never seen or heard anything like that.
My family watched the news coverage in horror and sadness. Manhattan was a special place to us. My mom took me to the City often, for Broadway shows and girls' days. NYC was fun, not scary. My cousin and aunt also went often; my cousin did commercials as a kid. They were supposed to be there that day, seventeen years ago. My aunt woke up with a terrible feeling in her stomach and called it off. If she hadn't our life would have been much different. We're grateful for that feeling she had, and we mourn for all of those that did not.
I've never walked in somewhere and felt reality hit so hard, as walking into the 9/11 museum in August 2017. It was an experience I will remember for a lifetime. The quiet, packed rooms. People reading, people listening to the stories of that day. The room full of faces of those that lost their lives that day. The face of my mother's dear friend on that wall.
On that day, it didn't matter what color you were, what you did for a living, what your social class was, everyone came together. One Nation.
Today I remember so many feelings. The peace of knowing my family was safe. The sadness of knowing my mom lost a friend. The fear of not knowing what was next for our Country. The admiration of the men and women, the police and firefighters, the good samaritans, that sacrificed everything to help complete strangers.
That is why I will never forget - 9/11/01.
