12 have to admit that Sekou's 3rd birthday hit me like a ton of bricks this year! It's been quite a busy year for the Coppock household and hosting a party was the last thing on my mind. Luckily enough, Monkey Joe's Germantown opened their doors the first week of May and I was able to schedule a party for my son with rather short notice (short notice never recommended!).
I worked directly with Monkey Joe's staff to schedule Sekou's birthday party. They educated me on the three different party packages and helped me to choose the appropriate one for my family: The Extreme Safari Adventure. This all-inclusive package was perfect for my overbooked schedule. Monkey Joe's took care of everything from Monkey Joe's disposable eatery, kids cups, invitations and a special birthday gift to pizza and beverages, game tokens, popcorn and goodie bags. All of this took place in our own private party room with our own dedicated party staff. The huge inflatable party chair was a hit and Monkey Joe even came in to visit the birthday boy! I was able to work with Monkey Joe's to order additional food for our adult guests and they even facilitated a special order of fruit trays.
Monkey Joe's essentially took the whole task of party planning off of my overburdened shoulders. Apart from invitation distribution, my only task was to bring a birthday cake. Best yet, our guests were impressed and elated with the superior accommodation and amazing atmosphere, dad and I were happy to not have to contend with cleanup and Sekou loved the inflatables... and eventually even warmed up to Monkey Joe. This will definitely be a memorable party for little Sekou... Almost 2 weeks later and I can't even pry him out of his Monkey Joe's t-shirt!
About Monkey Joe's Germantown:
The Germantown Monkey Joe's is an indoor playground boasting more than 12,000 square feet of space of inflatables and 4 colorful party rooms. They accommodate children up to 12 years of age and even have a special place, the Mini Monkey Zone, for children 3 and under. In addition to giant inflatables with slides and tunnels, you'll find a variety of games around the perimeter, including Monkey Joe's version of skee ball, crane games and ride-ons. Cool off this summer with their in-house concessions and don't forget to use your tickets for fun prizes and souvenirs. [See FAQ's for more information about Monkey Joes]
Beat the heat with Monkey Joe's this summer with free play or a party package now!
If you were at the Falls Road Golf Course of Potomac this rainy weekend, you'd know for a fact that there is $10k on the line for golf fans willing to take their chance at hitting a 100 yard hole-in-one! Make the shot and not only do you walk away $10,000 richer, but Quicken Loans also donates $10,000 to the Tiger Woods Foundation and Operation Homefront for the benefit of veterans and military families. And, any ball that lands within seven feet of the hole is worth $100 to the golfer. As a bonus, golfers that land the hole-in-one, as well as those who land the closest each week, will also be treated to a VIP experience at the Quicken Loan National.
Another fun fact is that there is no cost for golfers to participate in the challenge, which always takes place at a public golf course across Montgomery County, MD. There is nothing to lose for the golfers and $10 is donated to the fund for each golfer that attempts. That being said, no attempt is in vain!
WHEN & WHERE?
"Shot for Heroes" is taking place at four public golf courses across Montgomery County. It started this weekend and will take place every weekend, on both Saturday and Sunday from 10:00am - 5:00pm, until the tournament begins:
*May 21-22 - Falls Road, Potomac
*May 28-29 - Northwest, Silver Spring
*June 4-5 - Needwood, Derwood
*June 11-12 - Little Bennett, Clarksburg
*June 18-19 - Falls Road, Potomac
The Quicken Loans National is taking over local public golf courses so that the public can participate in the challenge. I mentioned that it is FREE to attempt the "Shot for Heroes", but I didn't mention the golfer qualifications: NONE! Yes, that is right, everyone is welcome to take the challenge; amateur golfers and golf fans alike. Each participant receives two attempts to get the job done.
The "Shot for Heroes" campaign coincides with the Quicken Loan National. This August is the Quicken Loan National's 10-year anniversary and they are bringing the tournament back to where it all started in 2007 at the Congressional Country Club of Montgomery County, MD.
Did you know that beyond the Tiger Woods Foundation's dedication to youth enrichment is also a dedication to serving those who have selflessly served our country? Tiger Woods is passionate about those who put their safety on the line to protect our country. Soldiers and their families pay the ultimate for our safety and the liberties we enjoy. We need to say "thank you" more often then we do and this funding is just one of the ways Quicken Loans and The Tiger Woods Foundation show their appreciation. Every dollar raised in this program will benefit the veterans and their families through both the Tiger Woods Foundation and Operation Homefront.
Last year, the program raised $235,000 for our heroes! I'm confident that "Shot for Heroes" can raise more this year in Montgomery County, but your help is needed:
*Share the Message. Tell a friend. Actually, tell ALL of them by sharing this post!
*Have Faith! You lose nothing by trying and each shot brings awareness!
*Take the Shot!
I was blessed enough to participate in Media Day at Congressional Country Club on May 16 and hear all about the program firsthand. For more information on this program and it's sponsors, check out the following sources:

I took my son on a fun break from a busy weekend to get our creative juices flowing this past Saturday. All A.C.Moore's, including the Rockville, MD location, host a "Kids Second Saturday Event" on Saturday's from 1-3pm. Parents can to bring their children by at any point during the two-hour event. The children are welcomed to use materials supplied by A.C. Moore to make a featured, seasonally-appropriate project and each kiddo gets to take home their own creation. Best yet, A.C. Moore craftologists are there, dedicated to providing instruction and help as needed. Believe it or not, this make-and-take crafting experience is FREE. A.C. Moore's objective is to introduce children to different artistic mediums and excite them about art.
This past Saturday, my 11-year old son designed a canvas drawstring bag. Each child received their own bag and then selected from a variety of vibrant fabric markers in all shades of the rainbow and neon colors as well. My son neatly crafted his bag, which he then filled with crafting goodies to give to his brother as a birthday present. As a parent, it was my pleasure experiencing the peaceful silence that naturally overtook the room while the children concentrated intently on adorning their prized masterpiece. The only limit to their project was each child's imagination!
The next Kids Second Saturday takes place June 11. June will be the last one until the program restarts again in September. No need to fret however, because Summer Fun Wednesdays begin June 29! *Please contact your local A.C. Moore for more details!
More about A.C. Moore:
A.C. Moore is a crafter's paradise! If you are artistic at heart, this store is a must. You might just want to do yourself a favor and pre-program the address into your GPS. The aisles are bright, cheery, well organized and bursting with products. I was impressed at the variety of product in each given category; from floral and paints to knitting and scrapbooking and "cupcaking" (what Isaac and I have always called the 'art of making cupcakes'!). I was mesmerized at how pristine, organized and well stocked the store was. It truly had something for everyone and at a very reasonable price. As if it can't get better than their robust offering of materials at low everyday prices, A.C. Moore also offers special ordering for bulk orders, military discounts, teacher discounts, amazing coupons, fundraisers for non-profit organizations, craft classes, featured projects online, attentive managers and staff and a rewards program! Let's just say that I found my new home away from home!
Where is my local A.C. Moore?
Please visit the A.C. Moore website to find your local craft sanctuary.
How much does this event cost?
These events are free. However, you will occasionally find a project that does have a small materials fee. This will also be noted clearly on the brochure.
When should I arrive?
The Kids Second Saturday event runs from 1:00 to 3;00 pm and has a "walk-in" type of flow. You may arrive when you are available, which means that you'll never be late! Sweet!
What project will they be featuring?
You can contact your local A.C. Moore store to see what project will be featured that month.
How old must my child be to attend?
While there are no age restrictions imposed by A.C. Moore, children in attendance are usually preschool-aged through teens; with elementary-aged children making up most of the guests. I recommend checking out the website for the featured project to see if it is something suitable for your child.
Remember that "FUN" doesn't need to break the bank at A.C.Moore!
My 11-year old son and I snagged tickets to the advance screening of The Angry Birds Movie: Red's Big Adventure hosted by National Geographic on May 14. Rovio's Angry Birds ap that we have all grown to know and love came to life in an impeccably animated 90 minute film suitable for parent and child alike.
Nat Geographic hosted the exclusive pre-screening at their DC headquarters but it will hit theaters near you on May 20. I highly recommend you make it a priority to see this movie with your family. Isaac and I both gave this movie two thumbs up and I could tell by the oohs, aahs and laughter among us that we weren't the only ones who thoroughly enjoyed it!
The movie flies into gear full throttle as Red, the birthday clown, arrives late to a special "hatch day" party for a little boy birdie. The overbearing papa bird sends Red off the deep end after he failed to show any grace toward Red's numerous mishaps causing him to be tardy to the celebration. In a subsequent court hearing, Red is "plucked" out of the bird community and remanded to an indefinite amount of time in an anger management facility where he must take the journey to becoming a "free range bird". It isn't long before everyone in the facility realizes the extent of his rage and he soon finds himself the outcast even within the lively cast of fellow birds.
Red, aka "eyebrows", does some soul searching and determines that his tendencies toward anger and pessimism stem from rejection and teasing he endured in his youth. However, his pessimism comes in handy when visitors arrive on their island, pretending to befriend the bird population. Red sees right through their ploy, but now has to earn back the trust from his fellow bird-kind in order to save the flock's fate!
In addition to being a hilarious, family friendly story that speaks to all ages, the writers have weaved in undertones of valuable lessons such as: Heroes come in unexpected forms and It's okay to have feelings; even anger at times.
"Braver-y. Humili-ty, An-ger-y
Mighty Red, you rescued me!"
Movie directed by Fergal Reilly and Clay Kaytis. Cheers to Christy Barcus, author of National Geographic's The Angry Bird Movie: Red's Big Adventure book. Isaac will cherish his autographed copy.
The Maryland Office of Tourism hosted their semi-annual Blogger Bash yesterday, May 12 in Baltimore at the Clyburn Arboretum and I was honored to attend and sample from a plethora of local wineries, breweries and distilleries across Maryland!
They provided a comfortable atmosphere for meeting local reps and learning more about that "something special" each of them had to offer; from amazing flavor profiles and proprietary processes to clever names and unique concepts. I also enjoyed speaking to local artisans and establishments from each County across Maryland; hearing more about their local happenings, events, attractions and festivals. I would need a blog post to tell you about each County, from Baltimore to Harford, Frederick to Wicomico, Cecil and more! No need to fret though, as I fully intend to share my experiences from each upcoming, local getaway!
I have to admit that I spent so much of my time with just a few of the many Maryland-based representatives that I didn't get to fully sample the vast offering that night. However, I did intend to share what I enjoyed:
The Urban Winery - Upon entering, I immediately bee lined to The Urban Winery; having heard so much about this one-year old Silver Spring winery. They feature a delicious selection of their own custom blends, but also offer a variety of other local wines. In addition to offering classes from the science of winemaking and pairings, Urban Winery also welcomes individuals and organizations in to create their very own wine; including a personalized label! It was a pleasure meeting Damon and Lysette. Damon, you can borrow a pen anytime!
Bodegas Gonzalez Ruggiero, better known as BGR Winery & Vineyard, is a family owned business that believes in putting their heart into creating some amazing European style wines that blend Spanish flavor with Italian tradition. My absolute favorite wine that they offered was the Albariño 2013 which 'balanced citrus aromas with delicate floral hints'. The grapefruit, while initially subtle, really came through in the finish.
Great Frogs of Annapolis, offered wine with a side of hospitality. Great people, amazing wine and a niche for preservation of their Chesapeake Bay vineyard and farm! You can check out their newest line of wines, the "Capital Series", via a tasting by reservation or sample their selection at their upcoming Date Night on May 27, 2016 at 6:00pm.
Linganore Winecellars is a bustling second generation family owned vineyard and winecellar situated in the scenic Mt. Airy farmland; nearly our backyard. Linganore offers a vast selection of wines; my favorite was their dessert wine: 2014 Maryland Blackberry Kiss. Visit Linganore for one of their complimentary guided tours or check out their events calendar for one of their many upcoming celebrations.
Last but not least, I made acquaintance with Blackwater Distilling, and sampled both their Sloop Betty handcrafted vodka and their Picaroon Maryland Rum. Blackwater reiterated their commitment to using quality raw product and a unique technique to ensure the high quality, smooth taste that their customers have come to expect. I'm looking forward to experimenting more with one of their top sellers: Sloop Betty Honey Vodka. The honey flavored vodka starts with a base of organic wheat and organic sugar cane and is then infused with raw, unpasteurized honey locally sourced from the Chesapeake Bay area; resulting in a subtly sweet finish.
I welcome you to select wines and spirits from local, MD producers at your next special occasion!

CaliBurger, a California-fresh burger institution is officially opening its doors in Maryland. Fresh food enthusiast and franchisee Sumeet Goel chose a vibrant, bustling community in Columbia, MD as the home for CaliBurger's first Maryland franchise; boasting a sleek, "CALI" facade. Sandwiched in between intriguing details regarding an interactive gaming system for guests and their procurement of the freshest ingredients used to prepare the best food possible, Goel indicated a moderately aggressive growth plan for CaliBurger to sweep through Maryland, from Baltimore to Montgomery County and even into Washington, DC.
At this juncture, you are probably wondering 'why such hype for just another burger place?'. The truth of the matter is that this isn't just another burger place, it's another California burger place... but it's so much more than just that. CaliBurger was born in Shanghai with the intention of feeding expatriates longing for some good 'ol American comfort food. The concept quickly gained momentum throughout the Eastern Hemisphere and eventually circled back to the Western Hemisphere. CaliBurger's menu brings us back to burger basics; except with the freshest, most flavorful components. Whether it is a juicy double Cali cheeseburger (CaliDouble) or a marinated chicken breast sandwich with all the fixings, I recommend the hand-cut, California French Fries and a creamy, dreamy hand spun milkshake for the true CaliBurger experience!
Speaking of experience, where else can you pick up a quality burger made to order and enjoy an interactive gaming experience with guests at other tables? As part of their technology-forward approach, CaliBurger has incorporated the HashtagBlitz game into their guests' dining experience. Guests use their Smartphones to participate in a hangman-style game using the store's "FunWall". Another game, similar to MineCraft is available to keep the kiddos engaged.
Now you can eat good and play hard with a clear conscience! Sumeet Goel has many commendable practices that he has carefully woven into the fabric of his business. He treats all of his associates as an extension of his own family and takes pride in stimulating the local economy by creating local jobs, offering fair living wages and full time benefits and promoting from within.
His conscientious approach to running his franchise is echoed in his philanthropic efforts. Each month, CaliBurger Maryland will choose a new organization to sponsor. CaliBurger provides them with the proceeds from an assigned day as well as awareness within the community. CaliBurger is open to the public tomorrow and will be donating their proceeds to the Special Olympics. Stop by and treat yourself to the full CaliBurger experience!
CaliBurger's grand opening will take place on May 16, 2016.
