The Maryland Office of Tourism hosted their semi-annual Blogger Bash yesterday, May 12 in Baltimore at the Clyburn Arboretum and I was honored to attend and sample from a plethora of local wineries, breweries and distilleries across Maryland!
They provided a comfortable atmosphere for meeting local reps and learning more about that "something special" each of them had to offer; from amazing flavor profiles and proprietary processes to clever names and unique concepts. I also enjoyed speaking to local artisans and establishments from each County across Maryland; hearing more about their local happenings, events, attractions and festivals. I would need a blog post to tell you about each County, from Baltimore to Harford, Frederick to Wicomico, Cecil and more! No need to fret though, as I fully intend to share my experiences from each upcoming, local getaway!
I have to admit that I spent so much of my time with just a few of the many Maryland-based representatives that I didn't get to fully sample the vast offering that night. However, I did intend to share what I enjoyed:
The Urban Winery - Upon entering, I immediately bee lined to The Urban Winery; having heard so much about this one-year old Silver Spring winery. They feature a delicious selection of their own custom blends, but also offer a variety of other local wines. In addition to offering classes from the science of winemaking and pairings, Urban Winery also welcomes individuals and organizations in to create their very own wine; including a personalized label! It was a pleasure meeting Damon and Lysette. Damon, you can borrow a pen anytime!
Bodegas Gonzalez Ruggiero, better known as BGR Winery & Vineyard, is a family owned business that believes in putting their heart into creating some amazing European style wines that blend Spanish flavor with Italian tradition. My absolute favorite wine that they offered was the Albariño 2013 which 'balanced citrus aromas with delicate floral hints'. The grapefruit, while initially subtle, really came through in the finish.
Great Frogs of Annapolis, offered wine with a side of hospitality. Great people, amazing wine and a niche for preservation of their Chesapeake Bay vineyard and farm! You can check out their newest line of wines, the "Capital Series", via a tasting by reservation or sample their selection at their upcoming Date Night on May 27, 2016 at 6:00pm.
Linganore Winecellars is a bustling second generation family owned vineyard and winecellar situated in the scenic Mt. Airy farmland; nearly our backyard. Linganore offers a vast selection of wines; my favorite was their dessert wine: 2014 Maryland Blackberry Kiss. Visit Linganore for one of their complimentary guided tours or check out their events calendar for one of their many upcoming celebrations.
Last but not least, I made acquaintance with Blackwater Distilling, and sampled both their Sloop Betty handcrafted vodka and their Picaroon Maryland Rum. Blackwater reiterated their commitment to using quality raw product and a unique technique to ensure the high quality, smooth taste that their customers have come to expect. I'm looking forward to experimenting more with one of their top sellers: Sloop Betty Honey Vodka. The honey flavored vodka starts with a base of organic wheat and organic sugar cane and is then infused with raw, unpasteurized honey locally sourced from the Chesapeake Bay area; resulting in a subtly sweet finish.
I welcome you to select wines and spirits from local, MD producers at your next special occasion!
