I saw these super cute cupcakes on Pinterest last week and wanted to make my own. Im not one for following directions so I only used the picture as my inspiration and made a few changes. I love to cook and bake but I always give recipes my own twist. Typically it all turns out delicious in the end but sometimes "my own twist" doesn't work out so well.
So how did these turn out?? Read on to find out what I did and see the finished product!
First stop was my local Food Lion to shop for ingredients. I had a general plan of what to buy but I also wanted to see what they had that I could try out. I already had a box of white cake mix at home which was great value brand (I love smart shopping and generic products). Here is what I left with.

I was really excited to try the aerosol cupcake icing and the decorator tips. Especially the decorating tips because they screw right into the tip of the icing tube. I usually make my own colors of icing using white icing and food color and load it into an icing gun gadget that I have to do the decorating. This looked so much easier!
First I mixed the cake according to the directions on the back of the box. I decided to make one change. I wanted my cake to be orange like a pumpkin. I prefer to use gel coloring but liquid food color works fine too. I used 1 tablespoon of the neon orange color. This make the cupcakes perfectly pumpkin orange!
As you can see my cupcake pan is well loved and used!
The box said to fill the cupcake liners half full but I like my cupcakes to be big so I filled these 2/3 full. The box also said to bake them for 18-21 minutes. I always start with the least amount of time as to not overcook them.
I shouted at my Alexa to set a timer for 18 minutes! Has anyone else discovered the amazingness of using the Echo in the kitchen?? I use the timer feature all the time!
I even managed to cook dinner and do the dishes in the 18 minutes. I ended up having to add another 5 minutes to the timer. It took 23 minutes to perfectly cook them.
Look how perfect these turned out! Now the hardest part of baking... waiting on them to cook so that I can ice them! I stuck them in the fridge and sat down to eat my dinner!
20 mins later they were perfect for icing! Time to finally try out the aerosol icing! The can came with 4 different tips. I decided to try star tip and leaf tip. The icing was easy to use and came out nicely. I used my knife to smooth the icing down on a few of my cupcakes.
I really couldn't decide what I liked better; star tip, leaf tip, and smoothed icing (pictured in that order).
Next I used the green decorating icing to create the vine. I choose the #3 tip for lettering. As I squeezed and moved the tip across the cupcake the line swirled naturally! So easy!
Then I decided to get brave and try to use the leaf time to make some leaves. This proved to be more difficult! Last step was adding a pretzel stick for the stem.
Here are all three decorated. I think I like the cupcakes that I smoothed out with a knife best. What do you guys think? Is this a pinterest win or pinterest fail?
