I met Dr. Rae at one of my Girls Nights Out. We connected and stayed in contact. Dr. Rae donated breast exam kits at my last event. She has recently shared her touching story with me.
Here is Dr. Rae Smith's Breast Cancer Story:
I recently took a mamogram and had mixed emotions prior to receiving my results. My results were good but annual check ups are needed for all women.
It was a special time, but I wasnʼt doing anything extraordinary. Or was I? For at that moment, my life would change. My husband, our 15 month old son and I were on a Thanksgiving Cruise. They were up on deck, I had come back to the cabin to grab a quick shower before we went to dinner.
I stepped out of the shower. Looked at my reflection briefly. And something had changed. I thought, “itʼs probably nothing”. I wanted to rush on with my
plans and life. However, a small voice urged me to investigate a little further. I did my self exam. There, there was definitely something different. My heart sank. My breathing changed. My world had gotten a little darker.
Once we got back home, I scheduled an appointment with my physician. Yes. The doctor needed a doctor. We decided that we would do an ultrasound. The report said
that it would likely be an innocent lump due to its location. My soul said otherwise. So despite my treatment teamʼs recommendation, I had a lumpectomy. A week before Christmas began the journey of breast cancer for me. I was in for a long road that carried some ups and downs. I am grateful that I am more than surviving due to early diagnosis.
It has been estimated that 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lives. There are risk factors, some modifiable:
My life has changed since that time. My son is soon to be 11 years old. I consume more organic vegetables and avoid excess sugars. I make sure
that I get adequate rest and self
Breast cancer was my wake up call. My mission is now to empower women to know their bodies and surround themselves with whatʼs needed to live their best lives!
