Spring is in the air -- and you know what that means, Mother's Day is just around the corner! We're traveling to Mexico on Mother's Day weekend, so I went shopping for my own mama a little early this week! I popped into Whole Foods Market in Fair Lakes to put together a gift basket of my top picks for mom.
Whole Foods Market is a one-stop-shop for all your mother’s day needs and celebrations. I particularly love shopping for specialty items at Whole Foods -- and I could browse their luxe lotions and soaps for hours!
So, after about an hour perusing the store, what ended up in my moms gift basket?
· a Whole Foods Market Chocolate bar- a mother’s day (or every day) must have!
· a beautifully scented lavender candle that will make any bath a relaxing one
· Whole Foods Market Fizzing Bath Bomb
· Whole Foods Market Dry Skin hand cream
· an adorable Mother’s Day Card
· delightfully scented, easy to carry perfume
· Rose’ wine (my particular favorite is the Santa Julia Innovacion Rose)
· One dozen Whole Trade roses
[Insider Tip] Digital Coupons have launched and Whole Foods is a celebrating mom by giving $5 off a dozen roses. Download the app and save $5 from May 4-8!
If you're trying to find a new recipe to celebrate mom, you can stop in Whole Foods Market any Saturday in the month of May from 12pm-4pm to experience Taste of Whole Foods Market. Wednesday night, I went to a happy hour at Matchbox One Loudoun to celebrate the announcement of their seasonal event line up and learn more about what is offered for children and families this year. First, before even sharing about the event... can you please take a look at these mini burgers? I bet you can't eat just one! We had a fabulous time at Matchbox -- they were a lovely host for the event!
Starting next Saturday, May 7, the One Loudoun event season kicks off with the opening of the Farmer's Market followed by Downtown Fest. Downtown Fest is free and open to the public -- and includes 2 music stages, kids corner and crafts, and tons of entertainment. Also on the schedule for 2016: Acoustic Wednesdays on the plaza, free kids summer concert series on the plaza, Youth Fest, and the Jolly Carnival. You can see a full calendar of events on the One Loudoun site and RSVP for Downtown Fest on Facebook.
Decided to go a little lighter for the summer season and Diane at First Impressions in Fairfax went to work. Absolutely LOVE how it turned out!
Betsey Bishop is a Senior Executive Director with Touchstone Crystal by Swarovski. She’s a leader of Swarovski's fastest growing division worldwide, and focuses on fun home parties and a high-quality jewelry line with 50% under $50. Betsey came from a catering and special events background, most recently with Marriott. When her son was born, she decided to stay home, and then welcomed a daughter two years later. “When they were 4 and 6, I joined a direct selling company to do home parties, because I wanted to talk to someone besides Barney and Bob the Builder, and to have a little fun money!”
Seven years later, Betsey learned that Swarovski was opening its own party company. “I figured THIS was a company that would get it right and grow it big. We are now 5 years old officially and we are exploding nationally - it has been a fantastic professional and personal journey. My personal passion is helping women learn what they're gifted in and how special they are, by showing them how to start their own small (or big) business. I love to encourage and mentor - watching women succeed is my truest reward. I keep a positive outlook by always looking at the big picture! We all have setbacks - the question is will I allow it to derail me? Or is my dream bigger than that?”
What profession other than yours would you like to attempt?
I wish I could have 9 lives! Minister, veterinarian, US Senator, TV news anchor, figure skater.....now I'm getting silly!
How do you maintain a work/life balance?
Everyday is different. With my children both in college, I don't have the 2:30pm work deadline any longer. At 52 I go easy on myself sometimes - getting up after 7am, for example, and taking a little nap late in the afternoon - those things ensure I have peak energy. Plus I do Pilates and Barre Sculpte, something new for me, and that allows me to turn everything off in my brain for an hour at a time!
What websites do you visit every day?
I'm a news junkie so I'm all over the place online especially with this fascinating election season we're in. I read www.shereadstruth.com most days for some inspiration. And Facebook, of course. It has changed our lives, hasn't it?
What is your favorite drink – and where can you find it in Northern Virginia?
1. My cup of coffee with cream as soon as my eyes open in the morning.....from my Keurig..... and another one after a quick nap in the afternoon :)
2. ʺTickled Pinkʺ - sort of a Sangria from BJ's Brewhouse Restaurant - just tried that last weekend and loved loved loved it.
What are your top 3 favorite people/places/things in Northern Virginia?
1. I love the winery focus that has developed in Northern Virginia over the last ten years - it's very entrepreneurial and social. It brings people together in a fun way. And I don't really even drink wine!
2. SHOPPING - Dulles, Tysons, Fair Oaks.... small downtowns like Warrenton and Leesburg.
3. All the great families who are doing such a good job raising their children with values and family customs. This is a terrific place to raise a family.
What is your goal for retirement?
Island living, fresh seafood, family, friends, ministry to teens or college students.
Do you have any advice for women who would like to start their own company?
I have a four-part mantra that I coach my team with:
1. Consistency - do something every single day for your business that's income-producing
2. Persistence - your feelings are not a good litmus test for how well you're doing in your business, so don't let a bad hour, day or week derail you. Just don't give up.
3. Training - learn everything you can from reputable sources, distill what you're learning into actionable items....and DO THEM.
4. Time - the farmer doesn't plant a seed and two hours later wonder why he hasn't produced a crop. Give it the length of time it needs to see progress and success.
Zig Ziglar said "We can get everything we want in life if we help enough others get what they want, too." It's a great philosophy for living. My life isn't about me - it's about others. When I can apply that to business too, it's a win-win!
Last night, I was invited to Blue Duck Tavern at the Park Hyatt DC to check out the new seasonal menu. Chef de Cuisine Brad Deboy and Executive Chef Franck Loquet celebrated the season's freshest ingredients from regional artisans and producers. Prepared on the terrace were Elysian Fields Rack of Lamb, Strawberry Salad, and Strawberry and Rhubarb Shortcake.
The Ringling Bros circus is in town through Sunday! I couldn't make it to opening night on Wednesday (we ended up going on Sunday) - so my friend Deanne took her kids and snapped some photos to share. What an awesome time! Her girls had a blast and it was their first time to the circus!
Pro tip: You can arrive 1 hour early and go on the floor for kids entertainment, painting with the elephants, and partying with the clowns!
Check out her photo review below. The show runs through Sunday -- details and tickets can be found here.
In case you missed it, we had a great meet up in March at the Hyatt Fairfax in Fair Lakes! Each month, our event sponsor helps us support a charity -- and this month, we teamed with PMSI and supported ComfortCases.org. We collected TONS of great items for local children in Foster Care. It's always great to get out, support women and business, plus be able to do something philanthropic for our community. If you haven't yet done so, check out our Facebook Events page and RSVP + Subscribe for upcoming events!
You can see the full event album on our Facebook Page. Special thanks to Classic Portraits and Carrie's Family Photography for capturing the event photos + to the Hyatt Fairfax staff for being amazing to work with!
Do you ever see characters or movies that give you that deja vu feeling and revert you back to elementary school? That's how I felt when I received a special delivery from Build-A-Bear Workshop with Pinkie Pie of My Little Pony inside!
I wasn't much of a girlie girl when it came to dolls - but I remember desperately wanting every single My Little Pony that was available.
Better than buying a hard, plastic Pinkie Pie (also, Rainbow Dash is available) - you can now make your own at Build-A-Bear Workshop. Complete with the cutest outfits and even a cape! Each character can be uniquely personalized to match your own personality.
Our favorite Build-A-Bear Workshop is at Fair Oaks Mall - but you can find a location near you on their web site.
Special thank you to Build-A-Bear Workshop for sending a Pinkie Pie to me for review!
