Three reasons your kids need to see an orthodontist, not a dentist.
I love my dentist. I really do. Everything about him is amazing. And so, when it came
time for my son to get braces, my first instinct was – well, our dentist can handle it. But
after thinking about it more, I realized that maybe that’s not the case? Maybe what my
child really needs is to see a specialist. And that’s when I started researching the
differences between a dentist and an orthodontist. At first, I didn’t really think there was
a difference, but there is. A big difference. Okay, so here’s what I discovered:
TOP THREE REASONS YOUR KIDS NEED AN ORTHODONTIST, NOT A DENTIST:
1) THEY WENT TO SCHOOL FOR THIS.
Being an orthodontist is a specialty that takes 2 or 3 more years of additional training
and education just to master. Not everyone can do it. I sure couldn’t! So, do your
research and find out if your dentist is both an orthodontist and a dentist. If they are both
– sweet. Most likely, they aren’t, in which case you should find an orthodontist who can
give you the expertise your kid deserves. After all, fixing your child’s smile isn’t cheap,
and having to have it redone would be even more costly and time-consuming.
2) THEY HAVE SPECIAL SKILLS.
Orthodontists need to possess a specific set of skills to realign your child’s jaw and
straighten their teeth perfectly. An orthodontist has these skills in spades, which means
they’re able to shift and transform smiles by using dentofacial orthopedics.
What is dentofacial orthopedics, you might ask? (I had no idea.) According to Wikipedia:
it’s the process of normalizing the growth of a patient’s bone structure and repairing any
imbalances of the face and jaws. My takeaway: See someone who has the proper
skills to transform your kid's smile.
3) THEY ARE ON THE PULSE OF NEW TECHNOLOGIES.
Although dentists stay up to date on technology, orthodontists must be more than up to
date. They need to have their finger on the pulse of what’s next. This cutting-edge thirst
for knowledge and new techniques is what drives orthodontists to learn more about how
to best manipulate the jaw and bite to not only change the shape of someone’s smile,
but also their facial features. This specialized expertise is paramount in what separates
a regular dentist from an orthodontist. Go with a doctor who understands the latest
breakthroughs inside and out and knows how to utilize them successfully.
So, before you make that appointment for your kids with their regular dentist to talk
about braces, think it through. Go with someone who is the best at what they do. You
(and your wallet!) will be happier in the long run. Trust me.
