Our August local charity spotlight is Simply Amazing. Simply Amazing Inc. is a non-profit 501(c)3 and is inspired by the positive creative energy of Emily Smith. The mission of Simply Amazing (SA) is to provide art and craft supplies that inspire creativity and empower deserving children.
Simply Amazing gives the gift of a Simply Amazing Creative Box (“SACB”) to children who live in temporary housing or foster care, or participate in youth at-risk programs. Each SACB is for a child’s personal use and includes art and creative supplies that are safe and easy to use, along with information and guided activities to stimulate creativity and imagination.
There are countless programs that serve at-risk youth in Central Florida. Although homelessness in Florida has decreased in the past 10 years, Florida still ranks 5th in the nation for homeless families. Central Florida has at least 6 homeless shelters for families with children. The Coalition for the Homeless, located in downtown Orlando, serves about 140 children, with their families, each night. The average age of a child at the Coalition is just 7 years old. One foster care program in the area is The Children’s Home Society of Orlando and they serve approximately 6,000 children in their counseling and foster care programs. The Boys & Girls Club of Central Florida sees more than 15,000 children walk through their doors for their daily programs.
Children who are thrust into unfamiliar living arrangements or stressful home life situations are powerless to change their circumstances. The Coalition for the Homeless reports that, “homeless children often struggle with self-esteem issues, as many have been exposed to tragedy and abuse, and they desperately need opportunities to express themselves in a positive way”. Established entities such as religious outreach programs, community centers, homeless shelters, food banks, government programs, as well as other philanthropic organizations, all provide some aspect of youth development and basic needs, however, to our knowledge, there currently are no charitable organizations specifically focused on enriching the lives of at-risk youth through the distribution of personal art and creative supplies.
Researchers have found that art for kids promotes confidence, creativity, problem solving skills, patience and determination. Therapists feel that art is valuable for children as it helps them process and deal with scary emotions in a safe way. (1) Simply Amazing will supply the creative tools, instructions, and encouragement for these children to artistically express themselves and provide a respite from their current situations.
Simply Amazing is distinctive in the marketplace by putting the art and creative resources directly in the hands of children, not to share, but to have something they can call ‘my own’, Simply Amazing Creative Box.
Their 2019 goal is to distribute 1,000 Simply Amazing Creative Boxes to Central Florida nonprofits that serve children who live in temporary housing or foster care, or participate in youth at-risk programs. As of June 15, 2019, we will have distributed 905 SACB. Our recipients are Foundation for Foster Children, Children’s Home Society, The Faine House, Orlando Children’s Church, Orlando Day Nursery, Small Steps for Compassion, and the Boys & Girls Club of Central Florida.

Today I had the honor of attending a cast member preview event of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at Disney’s Hollywood Studios as the guest of a cast member.
I’ve been looking forward to this new land since the announcement years ago, just like the other lands before it (Pandora and Toy Story), but I was really unsure what to expect. I mean, how the HECK were they going to pull this off and make it amazing enough to make back all the money they were investing and then some? When I found out that I would be going to the preview, it was hard to contain my excitement and post it all over the internet. I know this was allowed, but I wanted to keep it a little bit of a special secret.
Anyway, let’s get to what you all came here for. Today we got to explore the new land from 11am-3pm and ride the Millenium Falcon. After passing very high security checkpoints, we entered Galaxy’s Edge and it immediately felt like we left Hollywood Studios and had entered a new park. Everything was huge and so well thought out and done, down to the prints in the ground from droids and other creatures of Batuu, and the outfits all the cast members were wearing. (Oh and they even tell you how much something is in “credits”!) Unfortunately the ride, “Rise of the Resistance” does not open until December, so I have nothing to share on that. But I was able to get some great photos before heading towards the marketplace.
The marketplace area was seriously so awesome. I just loved all the detail the Imagineers put into it. There are lots of little shops as well as little snack areas here. If you head all the way towards the back and walk out, you will find yourself near the Docking Bay 7 quick serve, the lightsaber store, and the “Millenium Falcon” ride (just to name a few things).
The Millenium Falcon was really cool. Before the ride you can snap some photos and look around, which is really nice too. I got to be one of the pilots, which was not easy! It was pretty awesome getting to sit in the famous seat you see in all the movies.
For lunch we tried the Docking Bay 7 and let me tell you - YUM! We went all out and tried a bunch of goodies (menu provided for your viewing pleasure).
For entrees we got the Roasted Endorian Tip-Yip Salad and the Felucian Garden Spread. We ordered both desserts, and then tried the Moof Juice and the alcoholic beverage (don’t remember the name and it isn’t listed on this menu). Honestly, it was all delish! However, of the 2 desserts, I say go with the chocolate one (Batuu-Bon).
After lunch we explored the lightsaber shop, the droid shop, and more. The lightsaber shop was so cool and I so badly wanted to leave with a Rey lightsaber...maybe in the future. We then tried some blue milk and green milk. Both drinks are dairy-free, made with coconut and rice milks. You can get alcohol added to them, but we decided not to as it was so hot out. We had heard these drinks weren’t very good from those that have been to the park in Disneyland, but we wanted to make our own opinions. The truth? Not very good. The blue one is more berry flavor and the green is more citrus, but they both don’t have a lot of flavor and they both just aren’t very tasty. They aren’t that creamy (as someone asked us) and we didn’t finish either. I think the recipe could be tweaked, but in order to serve many people, I just don’t think it will be. However, if they are trying to have the success of Butterbeer at Universal, they really should change the recipe as this seems to be a popular consensus.
After a little more looking around and photo taking, we finally left right as our time there was ending. Leaving the land was like a shock because it honestly felt like we were somewhere so hidden and different, it did not feel like we were within Hollywood Studios.
So my thoughts? I LOVED this new land, Disney did an AMAZING job with it, and I cannot wait to return - although it probably won’t be for a long time =( This land is bound to be very busy for a very long time.
Star Wars: Galaxy Edge opens to the public August 29, 2019.
