As many of you know, this is my first year as a teacher. In my school system, we get an ENTIRE week for Thanksgiving break. Coming from an office background, the thought of getting an entire week off for a holiday was mind blowing - no needing to worry about seniority, requesting off, using PTO, having work to make up, etc. I was really excited to have the time off, but at the same time, majority of my friends still work in offices, so making plans wasn’t much of a possibility.
John and I decided to stay in town, as we usually do, so that we don’t have to deal with the terrible holiday traffic and so that we could relax. I wish I could tell you I did something amazing on this whole week off, but honestly, I used some of the time to go on appointments that I was putting off and then I ended up sick, so I pretty much binge watched Hallmark movies, napped, and cuddled my pups.
I am also taking two online classes right now and had homework to complete during the break. Yea...that didn’t happen until right before returning to work. I imagined a week of getting things done, accomplishing a lot, but in the end, I needed mindless heartfelt movies and many, many naps.
In a month I will be on my two week winter break and my guess is, it will be a lot of the same. Working with children is so rewarding but us teachers also need time to just let loose, relax, unwind, turn “off” and unplug. If you are a teacher, I hope that you too used your Thanksgiving break to unwind and that you will be using your much needed winter break to do the same.
If you are a teacher, comment to let me know what do you usually do on your breaks. Do you usually relax? Do you plan for the next quarter? Do you travel? I want to hear from you!
