Some of you may know, but before becoming the Director of Orlando Housewives, my dog Sophie had been diagnosed with cancer. Many people probably thought I was crazy, but we opted for chemotherapy to try to give Sophie a longer life. I’m thankful everyday that I had gotten insurance for her, because otherwise I’m not sure it would have been possible.
A little background: Sophie became my furchild in 2007 when she was only 5 weeks old. I brought her home the summer before junior year of college (my first year living off campus). She’s been with me all of these years, moving from home to home, different parts of Virginia and different states, being the one constant in my life for 11.5 years.
Diagnosed in September 2017, Sophie went through chemo until March 2018. During this time, I decided to take a job that allowed me to be flexible with my schedule so that I could be able to give her the treatment she needed and be there if she didn’t tolerate it well. Financially, times were tough, but in the end, Sophie went into immediate remission and stayed there until now, December 2018 (over a year later).
Right before Thanksgiving I started to notice something seemed “off” about Sophie. Luckily she had a follow-up appointment due to her remission, so I was able to have them take a look at her. It was first assumed that she maybe just had some allergies, but after having a week off with her (Thanksgiving break), I knew something was very wrong. She began making weird sounds when breathing and eventually got to a point where she could no longer sleep because she could no longer breathe. After multiple doctors appointments, while also working full-time and dealing with online classes and life, we learned Sophie had a mass/tumor completely blocking her nasal passages and it was too dangerous to remove. I was devastated. Other than not being able to breathe, she was acting her normal happy self and I still was not and am not ready to let my little pup go.
Sophie spent a weekend at the doctor’s office, under supervision and going through a special chemo in case her lymphoma had returned as well as starting steroids to help with inflammation. By Monday, Sophie had returned home, able to breathe through her nose again, and finally able to sleep! She’s been playful, happy, and loving in her usual way. We did learn later in the week the results of the biopsies and her cancer has most likely returned. It was so hard to yet again have to make a decision, but we opted again for chemo and she began immediately.
Most people probably think I am crazy for yet again deciding to put her through treatment, but she is part of my family, how can I not try to save her life and give her more time? When deciding, I questioned if I was just doing it for myself, but how can I decide to let her go so soon when she is still so mentally there and so happy? If she was showing pain and suffering, the decision would have been a no-brainer, but I just couldn’t live with myself if I didn’t try to help her.
Obviously I am no longer working a flexible part-time job, so the juggling is going to be real. I feel like until today, I haven’t even fully let myself digest all that went on, is going on, and what will be happening, including how crazy life is going to get these next few months.
I wanted to put this out there for anyone that might be going through something similar with their furchild, or perhaps might in the future. Know that I understand what a big part your pet is in your life and how much you would do for them. If you have to make the hard decision, know whatever decision you make is the right one. It’s ok to feel like your world is falling apart. It’s ok to feel like giving up. They are more than just a pet, they are your family.
To all those reading this, thank you for bearing with me during this hard time that is sure going to turn my life upside down and make me a little less available. I hope to still bring everyone great events and fun content, just know I am trying my best.
Hi! I'm Michelle. I love traveling, trying new restaurants, meeting new people, going to the parks, and playing with my dogs. I'm also super Disney obsessed - parks, cruise lines, movies - I love it all!
