I don't know about you, but having an opportunity to get to be surrounded by some of the most fabulous skincare and beauty products in the world everyday sounds like an amazing job. Well, that is exactly what Shanna Massad gets to do as the Store Manager for the only freestanding Clarin's Boutique in North America (based right here in the Philadelphia-area)!
Shanna worked for many years as a Learning and Development Specialist where she trained in the travel industry and wrote web content from home. After two years of this, she realized she needed a work outlet that included other people and so she started working part-time at a popular cosmetic and skincare store and quickly rose to a management position (she credits her background in sales and training to this). At this point, she knew she loved the industry, and she spent a few years learning the ins and outs of beauty retail.
Cue the launch of the new Clarin's Beauty Hub and Open Spa that launched in King of Prussia this past year. Shanna said she wasn't actively looking for a new job, but the opportunity piqued her interest. She knew the brand, she knew that it was the #1 skincare line in all of Europe, she knew it was family-owned and operated; however, Shanna had no idea what a wonderful culture exists within the Clarin's company.
"Everyone I have met within the company has been with Clarin's for 10, 15 or 20 years because no one wants to leave. Ever. I was able to put together a team of absolute beauty rockstars. Every single team member is 100% committed to the business and to making every woman who walks through the door feel beautiful and special. And that is truly the best part of what I do - making our client's feel their absolute best. Whether it's finding the perfect red lipstick for a client's 90th birthday party, or teaching the lady who just finished her 4th round of chemo how to create a perfect eyebrow, making every woman feel beautiful is my mission and aligns perfectly with Clarins' values".
Describe yourself in three words
"Passionate, Smart, Caretaker".
What do you consider your greatest professional achievement?
"Over the years I have had the privilege of mentoring and developing several young women into becoming strong leaders in their own right. This is definitely my proudest achievement. I believe that when you've reached a certain level of success, you are obligated to pay it forward".
What are your professional goals for the next six months?
"To double my store's business and have at least two of my team members move up to the next level in their careers".
What profession other than your own would you like to attempt?
"I'd love to write novels full-time".
How do you maintain a work/life balance?
"It's not easy. I am committed to fitness, yoga mostly, but I just recently started working with a fantastic trainer. I act in local theatre. Spending family time is a priority".
What websites do you visit every day?
"Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and various beauty websites".
What are your top three favorite people/places/things to do in your city?
"Philadelphia Museum of Art on a Sunday, Warm Daddy's for blues and dinner at Continental Olde City".
What is your goal for retirement?
"Buy a vacation home in Guanacaste, Costa Rica - it's my favorite place in the world".
Do you have any advice for women who'd like to start their own company?
"Business is for gladiators. The most important character trait you could cultivate to succeed in business is resilience. Failure is inevitable, but failure is not failure if you learn from the result. Learn to fail forward. Get up, and try something else. If you focus on the desired outcome and never lose sight of it, you will come up with a zillion ways to get there - eventually one will work. Resilience".
Anjali & Erin's last thought: "If you spend your energy helping other people get what they want, you'll never have to worry. Success will take care of itself".
