Scott and I took the day off on Valentine’s Day. Flamingo Gardens had been on our list, so off we went on our day-trip to explore.
Flamingo Gardens is a wildlife sanctuary with an aviary, zoo and a gorgeous botanical garden located in Davie, Florida. If you choose, there is a narrated tram ride through the tropical rain forest, native hammock, wetland area, and groves including some of the last natural jungle growth in South Florida. It lasts about 25 minutes. We opted to do the walking tour.
We wandered the sanctuary filled with over 3000 species of rare and exotic, tropical and subtropical and native plants. The botanical gardens were peaceful, and the trees were covered in blooming orchids. The tall trees provided enough shade, so the walk was well protected from the sun. They also have a gift shop filled with fun and tropical treasures for your home and garden and a food truck with beverages and snacks.
There was an educational demonstration on owls, while we were there. When asked to take flight, the owl’s wingspread was huge, and the strength of its wings were amazing. This took everyone by surprise and somehow, I believe the owl was happy to impress us.
The wildlife sanctuary was filled with collection of Florida native wildlife - including alligators, bears, bobcats, eagles, otters, panthers, peacocks and flamingos! I was obsessed with the flamingos! For a quarter you can purchase food and hand feed the flamingos. It was a perfect way to get an upfront and personal experience with the flamingos. They came in different colors and were so fun to watch.
The Flamingo Gardens is a non-profit organization. They keep the sanctuary running with both admittance fees and generous donors. This weekend they have a fun charity event, open to the public. It’s their annual FOOD & Wine Benefit – The Masquerade. It looks like a ton of fun.
