I was rinsing my hair in the shower when it happened. My neck was stuck, tilting back. The pain was intense and shot down my left shoulder. Unsure of how to fix it, I laid flat on the floor believing that would work the kink out. Bad idea. Now I was stuck on the floor. Moving was so painful, that I just laid there.
Remember the scene in Sex and the City when Miranda Hobbs, played by Cynthia Nixon, had a similar incident on the show? Yes, this is what I was thinking about while laying stuck on the floor.
Eventually I was able to get up. I messaged all my friends in the area to find out what do you. Thankfully, our friends Marie and Ken came right over to save the day. They brought a Tens Unit and an ice pack that wraps and Velcros around your neck. They ALWAYS have all the cool gadgets.
After a week of babying my neck with heat, cold and the Tens machine, the pain went away. Everything was forgotten, until it happened again, a few weeks later. This time I was playing Bunco. Yes, go ahead and laugh, it’s a dice game and besides running for ‘traveler’ prize, it’s a non-contact sport. Maybe it was my ‘sexy dice roll’ that did it. Yeah no.
Our health insurance plan recently changed, and my chiropractor no longer accepted our insurance. I was desperate for a new chiropractor and googled each one on the approved insurance list. Because I am not the athletic type, I didn’t feel that a sports medicine chiropractor was a good fit for me. Boy was I wrong.
Dr. Brett Goldstein, D.C. was able to see me immediately, on New Year’s Eve. Even better, he is located in Pompano Beach on SE 22nd Avenue. After accessing my range of motion, strength and eliminating some pain through massage, he suspected the issue, but wanted confirmation with an x-ray. I had the x-ray done and by the end of the day learned I have a reversal of my C curve in my neck.
Look around and you’ll see people looking down at their phones. Hit the local coffee shop, people are looking down at their laptops. Top this with using the wrong pillow at night and boom – you’ll eventually end up with text neck.
Dr. Brett Goldstein, D.C. emailed me some exercise videos to do. In addition, I began seeing him twice a week for muscle stretching and massage. Have you ever wished someone could work the knot out of your shoulder? You know the spot I’m talking about. Let me tell you, it can be done.
In addition to the therapy, I was given more strength exercise tips and postural techniques that are required in order to reverse the issue. Plus, all the bad postures and habits of looking down at my phone to watch a YouTube video, sitting at the kitchen table with my laptop – they had to end.
We found a few items to help along the way, beside the Tens machine (thank you Marie and Ken). Dr. Brett Goldstein, D.C. suggested a block that I use to lay on once a day. This helps your neck and muscles correctly position. Each day you lay on it a minute more until you get up to 15-20 minutes. Using a roller to roll my calves and neck where something I was already doing, but he had a different method that works well with relieving my neck pain.
The Relax the Back store had wonderful items and we were in there for a couple of hours. Sleeping on my stomach has been the hardest adjustment, so I use a neck sofa to help me stay in one position. The Quzy Neck Massager that adds heats is absolutely amazing. It somehow locates all the knots in my neck, shoulders and back and provides relief.
My desk, chair and screen also received an update. My new desk (thank you, Daddy) is from Wayfair. The new fancy ergonomic chair was gifted to me by Maria Sanson, with Direct Office Solutions at the Eastside Professional Networkers event. And now I have a detached keyboard and an adjustable tablet holder for my laptop screen.
Breaking old habits have been tough but being pain-free with good health is worth it. Keep your shoulders back and your chin up. Otherwise, text neck is a real pain in the neck.
