Southwest Florida Housewives in the City loves to partner with local nonprofits to help spread awareness. For December we are spotlighting Summer's Project!
Founded By a Kid with a story who wanted to make a difference! Summers Cookies Help Kids at Golisano Children’s Hospital of SWFL! ORDER NOW to help make a difference in a child’s life.
Summer Kates is an 9th grade student looking to make a difference in her community.
Summer is known for her passion to help others, her efforts witnessed as she goes above and beyond when given a chance to volunteer or put together a charity event. Summer recently was on the news for spending the day out of school to clean up Veterans graves in a local cemetery as a way to honor the Veterans who have passed. Summer is also an A student who somehow manages to take on being class president, an honor roll student, completing with A’s high school classes done online through FLVS, being a competitive travel athlete and on the fields up to 5 days a week, somehow also finds time to volunteer and put together her own event to give back.
New Years Day 2015, Summer was tragically hit by a car while playing outside in her neighborhood, she was rushed to what is now Golisanos Childrens Hospital of SWFL by ambulance. There she spent 4 long days being treated. Once released she was bound to a wheel chair then relied on use of a walker for months. Despite everything, the level of care provided to Summer, and her family during such a difficult time was unbelievable. If it was not for the level of care she received her recovery may not have been the same, thanks to what is now known as Golisano Children’s Hospital of SWFL Summer is today back on the soccer fields healthy and happy.
As you can imagine something such as getting hit by a car is enough to make you appreciate a lot of things in life. Summer wanted to give back to those who helped her get back on her feet, she was determined to start her own event, ‘Summers Project’. From there she has made it a goal to put on an annual bake sale, Cookies for a Cause, that donates the proceeds to the Children’s Hospital. The first year they sold cookies and lemonade on the front yard, luring in foot traffic by way of social media and lawn signs. This year Summer put on Cookies for a Cause on December 9th 2017, the bake sale was huge success with donations that totaled to $450. Over 250 baked items were sold this year, utilizing resources through social media word spread quickly, we ended up baking, selling out, baking, selling out, baking again and still every crumb sold! The feedback from the community was unbelievable.
Summer has plans to grow this event by continuing to spread the awareness and increase donations each year, were setting a goal to raise $1000+ in 2018 and plans to continue to grow each year there after.. Cookies for a Cause under Summers Project, is very dear to us all.
Donations from amazing people like YOU, WILL make a difference in a child’s life as it helps their stay at the Golisanos Childrens hospital of SWFL so much more enjoyable. Items from the child life team help the children cope with stress and anxiety, it assists them in feeling safe and takes their minds off why they are there.
Please consider making a donation today, any amount makes a difference. Email Summersprojectgives@gmail.com or Message us on Facebook today to learn how you can make a donation to Summer’s Project. <3
Each month I choose a local nonprofit to support. This month the SWFL Charity Spotlight is The Children's Network of Southwest Florida, which is committed to working with our community to protect children and preserve families.
The Children’s Network of Southwest Florida, LLC, was created in April 2003 as the Lead Agency for child welfare services in Circuit 20. It is the private, nonprofit lead agency that administers the child welfare system in Lee, Collier, Charlotte, Hendry and Glades Counties. Our mission is to work with the community to protect children and preserve families. Children’s Network is responsible for over 2,400 abused and neglected children, and delivers a comprehensive local system of care through subcontracts with more than 50 social service agencies. The agency also serves approximately 125 at-risk community children each month in our Diversion Program.
The Children’s Network of Southwest Florida reflects important principles:
We collected donations for their OPERATION SANTA program at the Holiday Sip & Shop Social this month! But here is how you can continue to help:
